St Malo 2019 –

1st Open St Malo NIPA Old Bird National, clocked at 11.07pm on the first day.

The Premier NIPA Old Bird National was flown from St Malo in France over last weekend in what was the hottest time of the year, and especially in France where the heat was severe. Birds were race marked locally on Wednesday, and release in France was at 9.45am on Saturday 29th June in a Lt Southerly wind, all Irish Organisations released together. At the home end we had an early morning thunderstorm and the birds no doubt encountered showers over the route. One bird was recorded in Dublin after 8.00pm and it was not thought birds would make north on the day. In fact one bird was confirmed at 11.07pm by Jeff Greenaway in Dromore, and this one despite some early morning arrivals on Sunday to the longer flyers was the overall winner doing velocity 982 for the 443 miles.

Prov Top 4 – J Greenaway Dromore 982, Mr & Mrs Sempey Cullybackey 973, Hugh Boyd Randalstown 955, S & J Bones & T Yates Muckamore 942.

Mid Antrim had two early second day birds both timed at 5.44am with the owners watching patiently. Mr & Mrs Sempey kept the good distance record going for Cullybackey HPS, they recorded their first ever arrival from France to finish 1st Sect B and 2nd Open NIPA just 9 yards short of the winner. Old Hand Hugh Boyd from Randalstown has timed many birds from France over the years but this latest one might be the best finishing 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 2nd Sect B and 3rd Open NIPA. Only two other birds were recorded in the Ahoghill Centre, Chris & Robin McIntyre of Cullybackey at 8.17am recorded velocity 855 flying 493 miles to Dervock and then A C & T Tweed had the only bird in Rasharkin & Dist at 12.46pm flying 488 miles. Best in Muckamore Centre was S & J Bones and Trevor Yates who time at 5.29am finishing 1st Sect C & 4th Open NIPA, two other arrivals were reported in Castledawson to S & K Watson and S McFlynn. Monday completed the three days of the race, well done to all members who recorded birds. The Blue Riband Kings Cup is due to be flown on Friday from St Allouestre.
