From the fair city
With Kevin Barry & Tucker Daniel
Hello folks and welcome to another race in the Irish South Road Federation or as some wags were calling it the Sunday south road fed, yes the weather played its part again this week with another postponement of the marking because of the bad forecast for Saturday. The rain came on Saturday alright but cleared a bit quicker than expected but you can only guess at what the weather is going to do and in fairness every other south road organisation postponed as well. The Sunday dawned and it was a while before the rain cleared from the south west but thankfully it did and turned into a beautiful day with high broken cloud and good sunshine, a perfect day for racing and with a good south south west wind pushing them along we taught it would be fairly quick, although I didnt think it would be in the 2000s and as usual a lot of birds just didnt make it down and are probably in the outer Hebrides by now.

Looking like 3rd fed and taking the red card in the club is J. Flood on 2064, john has his birds in great form and also takes 3rd club on 1977, D Andrews splits his pair for 2nd club on 1991.

As the saying goes it hard to keep a good man down, but in this case its harder to keep
A good partnership down, despite this being their first red card of the year the lofts of Mr & Mrs Hayden are well out in front with the clubs points. The winner this week is a 2 year old Soonjten cock being a grand son of Junior and its fair to say this line is really doing the business for them 1st club 1st fed, 1st club 5th fed, 2nd club 5th open, ect ect must be great to have a pair like this in the stock loft.
1st Mr & Mrs Hayden 2030, 2nd J Brady & son 1989, 3rd Mr & Mrs Hayden 1985 and 4th Jim McGovern 1984.

Sarsfield R.P.C. 33/472
A first win of the season for Pat Craven with a yearling Sootjan/Van loon blue cock, he was 2nd club as a youngster from mallow and looks like a promising future for this fella, his velocity was 2008.8. Right behind in 2nd spot is Tucker Daniel on 2005, this one is a Red Daniel Van Reet roundabout hen out of a good stock pair that have already bred winners for Tucker. In a quick race like this you will always get close calls and none more than the fight for 3rd with M/M Neville Leonard & Dtr on 2004.9 just piping Pat Byrne & Fam who finish 4th on 2004.2. No room for messing around today. M/M Padner Byrne clocks his 6 year old cock that was second club last week to be 5th on 1989, with brother Mick Byrne close behind in 6th on 1988 with a 2 year old cock. Frank McEnroe gets 7th with the only other hen in the result on 1983.

Had a nice chat with Tony Ingle from the Shelbourne club last weekend, you may remember Tony races as Ingle Bros and Son and topped the fed from Thurles in our first race. The Ingle name goes back a long way in Dublin pigeon circles, in fact Tonys father won his first race back in 1911 almost 100 years of winning in the family. It nearly didnt happen for Tony as he has the dreaded pigeon lung and was going to pack up a few years ago he actually went as far as selling his winning family of birds but a good friend of his Nadger Smith from the Greenhills club went down and persuaded him to change his mind, Nadger sorted him out with a few birds and helped design and build a more fancier friendly loft for Tony and although he still suffers bad with his breathing he makes the point that he is better off with them and the ailment than not having the birds at all. Getting back to the pigeon and it is down from Nadgers birds the dam having won Barleycove and brothers of hers both won Mallow. The Sire topped the fed twice from Thurles, so plenty of winning blood lines there. Like most of the best fanciers I have spoken to over the last few years the motivation for winning drives these people on and when I asked him why he wants to win so much its not for the accolades of being the best although thats has a part in it but its the thoughts of losing that really upsets him. I hate losing Kevin he told me and the more I dont win the more I want it, so thats it in a nutshell really, drive and determination and a will to be the best. Thanks Tony for the yap and I will try get down to you during the year and maybe take a photo or two and show the readers how your loft is set up. Just before I finished speaking to Tony I asked him did he know my father as he was born and reared down in Ringsend as well, and low and behold it turns out they are first cousins, it truly is a small world and it just shows that pigeon racing is in the genes although the ones passed to me must be missing something, they say they didnt let much over the bridge in Ringsend years ago they must have held on to the piece of DNA that carries the winning of pigeon races because it didnt make its way up to Ballyer, well not yet anyhow.
Well on that note I will sign off for this week, thanks again to all the P.O. people in the clubs for the results and keep it going, in a few weeks we will be into the double channel/ inland races and this can be a nightmare for anyone trying to put together a report, so I would ask you to get the results in as early as possible, thanks again until next week.
Kevin Barry.
