From the fair city.
With Kevin Barry & Tucker Daniel

Hello folks hope you are all well,

After a one day hold over the Irish South Road Fed first inland open race was held from Barleycove in west Cork, a distance of approx 198 mile to the middle of the fed. Of all the inland races on the program this is probably the hardest to win, the birds got away on Sunday at 12-30pm into a stiff east wind. The north side of the fed dominated this race with only a handful of birds from the south and west side breaking into the result.

Winning the open by a yard on 1346.3 and collecting his first Barleycove open is current Fed champion Gerry O Mara & Fam from the Kildonagh club, Winning this race has been an ambition of Gerrys for many a year and after collecting numerous first feds and winning an open from Sennen Cove this was the one he wanted most. The pigeon is a Van Loon / Sootjan cock who was second club the week before but came with the winner and as Gerry says it was just the nearest one to him he clocked first, he then went on to beat his loft mates back from training on the Wednesday by 2 minutes and that was that all the pools went on this fella and he didnt disappoint. The sire is one of the lofts best racers he has 7 first clubs plus section wins and a heap of fed cards including 6th open from this race point and 3rd fed Mallow, he in turn is a grandson of The Big Blue a planet Van Loon he got from Alan Hindhaugh from the U.N.C. this cock is sire, g/sire and now gg/sire of over 80x1st clubs and 12x1st feds with birdage of 8,000 to 11,000 birds.
The Dam is a Sootjan who has bred 14x1st clubs and is one of the lofts best stock hens, she is from Tom Boland and Vic Green in Bradford and this pair only went together after Gerry retired the cock from racing, these and 3 others who have also scored well are the first yearlings from this pair, Im sure they wont be the last to grace the top of the fed sheet further down the line.
The rest of the result from the club where 20 sent 252, in 2nd spot is P. Bell & Fam on 1286, 3rd is J. Gannon, 4th went to R. McNally and 5th position is A. Dent.

In what turn out to be a good steady race the loft of Mr & Mrs Hayden really did have a great day.
Not only did they take the first 4 in the club they were just behind overall winner Gerry o Mara to
Finish 2nd in the North Side clocking station on vel 1341 and finishing 4th Open
The winner this week is a yearling cock flown roundabout of Jan Huybregt breeding and was a winner
As a young bird as well, I am sure John wont mind sharing the credit with Gerry McCourt who bred
This good bird for them.
Many congratulations to former DNE member Gerry O Mara on this fantastic open win.
Regards Billy

Sarsfield R.P.C 27/274
Winning the club and the section by over 50 yards and taking 6th on the open sheet and the first one on the south side on 1334.6 is last years old bird Champion M/M P. Byrne, this 2 year old pied cock has a bit of form in at this race having finished 5th Open last year, in 2nd spot is M/M N. Leonard & Dtrs, Neville finished 3rd last week and goes one better this week with a yearling blue cock. Pat Craven gets 3rd with a 3 year old Blue pied cock.

Finglas R.P.C. 20/410

McLaughlin was also banging them in for 17th and 29th open with A. Farrell chipping in with 22nd, 25th and 28th open great performances lads.

Ray Matthews does it again this week and takes the first 6 positions in the club he also tops the section again and has one of only 3 birds to get in the top 50 of the open from the south side of the Liffey for 12th open on 1315, this cock is a full brother to his Janseen/Verheye hen that won an open back in 2003, so as is seen all through this report quality always comes to the top.

Trim R.P.C.
Tony Morgan takes the top 3 again in the club the first one on 1199, Des Rainey has the next 3 for 4th, 5th and 6th.

Met up with Big Phil Murray last week, Phil used to live across the road from the club and raced for years in the Sarsfield, he moved away about 10 years ago but I was delighted to hear hes getting back into the birds and has joined the Celbridge club this year, good luck mate and welcome back.
I think I am going to change professions very soon after predicting in last weeks column that Gerrys birds were in super form and to watch him for the open ( he gave me a bit of stick after the race said he taught I would put the mockers on him) yes its off the buses and I am going to set up one of those premium rate tarot lines 2 euro per minute to tell you who is going to win the races every week, might save you a few bob on pool money. Of course all the profits will go to my chosen charity the first one is The Kevin Barry Camera Fund but I will give you the first week free so here goes. 1st fed this week from Tramore will be ehhhhhh let me think, yes M/M K. Barry & Son by 5 yards, better not give away my uniform just yet then. Well on that lighter note I will finish for this week, all the best and have a good one.
