Hello folks hope you are all well, this week the Irish South Road Federation had 2 races on Saturday 14th Jun the 2nd Sennencove in as many weeks and an inland race from Mallow approx 130 mile.
Just before we get into the results I see the one loft ring lists are starting to appear on the respective web sites and was delighted to see the 4 birds we sent to the Galway race for the local national schools are all still there, it would be great to have some left for the last race to get the kids excited, In Manchester in the pigeon-chat.com race where we sent 24 birds all but 3 have made it past the flying out stage so that has to be a good omen for the rest of the training.
John Flood was on to me about the Sandyhill stud young bird nom race this year, entry fee is 50 euros per bird and is limited to 2 birds, all money taken in will be paid out except a small amount for printing and diplomas, so get out to Sandyhill and pick up your entry forms, entries must be submitted before the first young bird race so time is running out.
First up this week is the Sennencove open race, the birds were liberated at 10am into a west wind with a touch of north, not the ideal conditions for a channel race into the east coast of Ireland but the birds made good time and the quickest of them was to the Bray Co. Wicklow loft of Cowap & Buckley, this partnership are no strangers to channel victory after winning the open from the corresponding race last year, in fact the Sootjan 2 year old cock that wins the open was unpaired all season and only paired up a couple of weeks before the race, the hen he is with is a sister of last years winner so the eggs will be allowed to hatch and a nice pair of late bred they will be. To show how much the lads enjoy this race they had another 3 birds in the open result for 13th, 18th and 73rd great flying.

Having another great race with 6 positions in the top 10 we have the in form lofts of Mr & Mrs Hayden
The winner for the second week in a row is a 2 year old Soonjten Van Reet and really is a star in the making, this cock now has 4 wins to his credit 3 this year and a number of other prizes; he is full brother to the hen that won Bird of the year in the club last year and I cant see anything beating him for that honour in 2008.
John was telling me that although the dam of this cock won 2 x 1st herself she came to win many more only for being a very bad trapper, when you see the amount of club, fed and open position this hen has bred when crossed with the Junior / Soonjten lines it was a very good move to put her in the stock loft.
Many might not have been so understanding with a bird like this. Just got the fed result in for the Mallow race and well done to John he tops the fed by 3 yards and also takes 17th and 19th, Joe White finishes 5th fed in a great day for the club, super stuff.
1st Mr & Mrs Hayden 1545, 2nd Joe White 1538, 3rd & 4th Mr & Mrs Hayden 1532, 1530.
On the water we have another winner with the Van Reet influence, taking his 1st red card of the year we have Jim McGovern who clocked a 3 year old hen, Jim always wins a few races each year with the old birds and I would say he was starting to think his time was running out.
Just wanted to tell you about a pigeon being raced by Gerry o Mara this year he has scored in all 4 channel races this year and is only a yearling, I wasnt up in the marking station as I had to do my club result but I believe it topped the station I am not sure there are many pigeons around like that?

Sennencove, Mick Byrne takes wins the club with a Sootjan 2 year old widowhood cock, this cock does what Mick has been threatening for the last number of weeks and scoops the club DTW, this pool has been running for exactly a year and comes in at over 1700 euro, nice work Mick well done. Winning the inland race is Pat Craven with a Van Loon/ Sootjan yearling cock on 1534.6 and 9th fed this cock already has a win from Rosscarbury under his belt. 2nd in both races is Anto Sweeney just missing out from Mallow by the narrowest of margins on 1534.4 he also takes 3rd club upland and 10th & 14th fed. On the water 3rd is Tucker with Tyrell Bros 4th and Cole Bros 5th, Larry (the lizard) Finnegan clocks one for 6th spot. The rest of the positions from Mallow are 4th M/M P. Byrne with Brendan Stafford & Sons taking the next 3, just a mention for a couple of novices who are really getting stuck in this year, Gary Byrne is 8th and Willie Brennan who is having a terrific year finishes in 10th spot, no handy races in this club.

Well thats it for this week just the one race next week then its off to France, I already have the onions hanging in the loft just to get my French candidate acclimatised, I also gave him ferry tickets and bought him a right good pair of shoes just in case he has to walk home, have all the young birds on the road at the moment and bar one day this week the weather just couldnt be better for starting them off, the first couple of tosses I just brought them over to the local park to get them used to the car and travelling, then down to city west and this morning I went as far as the Black Church about 10 mile, still all there Im glad to say but 1 did get one come back injured but not too seriously. Good luck to everyone who sends to France and if you dont hear from me on the Monday of the race can someone please call round and get me out of the chair, thanks.
