Killyleagh birds dominated the NIPA race from Tullamore, flown last Friday due to poor weather conditions forecast for Saturday. After two weeks of Area Liberations it was a first mass release for the young birds, some 19,000 birds competing. Gordon Bros & Son had without doubt the Card of the Day but ended up just pipped by McComb Bros who took 1st Open NIPA. Could all winners of trophies in the 2017 season please return them as soon as possible, and no later than 20th August. They can be given to the transporter driver when collecting your clubs pigeons. Please ensure they are returned cleaned.

City of Derry Combine Tullamore -

The first proper race of the NIPA young bird season got under way today, a day earlier than scheduled due to adverse weather that was forecast over the weekend. After the disastrous two area liberation's that took place prior to the mass liberation today, having nearly wiped out the town’s population of young birds, it was no surprise to see that the entry from the whole town was shockingly low. If I’m honest, its effectively a full clubs worth in a good day! A total convoy of 358 pigeons left to join with the rest of the North birds to help make up the 19,146 birds total convoy. No one could have predicted what was going to happen in the prior races and it certainly wasn't the fault of the race controllers. There has been much speculation of clashing, solar flares, poor feeding, sick pigeons etc. Who could know? Regardless, the brave 358 birds went unknowingly of their quest today; up against the odds and having over 18,000 birds to drag them east of the Sperrins, they were released at 10.00am into a light west/north westerly wind. Gaining speed on route with the odd light shower and a relatively warm day, Perfect conditions for racing! For the first mass lib, the birds did not disappoint and in general, returns have been much better than the area liberation's. With a strong w/nw wind at the home end it was predicted that the birds should arrive around the 3 hour mark, and the first bird into the town arrived shortly after at 13.06hrs for Teddy Millar of the Foyle RPS to win the Derry Combine. The rest of the young bird season will remain ominous for sure! Congratulations to all the club winners today, and can I take this opportunity to give special congratulations to the newly formed Destined Adult Learning who have been doing well and ended up 5th in the Combine. Great result for the guys there under the leadership of Jim Ramsey and the guys in the Derry & District. Keep up the good work guys.
