INFC Skibbereen Young Bird National – Update
Skibbereen YB Nat was the final race of the season for the INFC, entries were well down as expected and following the race marking in Lisburn on the Wednesday the race was flown as planned on Saturday 18th September with liberation at 9.30am. The race was sponsored by the INFC with 5 bags of pigeon mixture going to each 1st Sect winner as follows: 1st South Section 32/304 D Walsh Tower Invitation vel 1622, 1st North Section 116/1555 Johnston Bros Glen HPS vel 1578, 1st Middle Section 26/136 J Boothman & Son Jun Blanchardstown vel 1460. 174 members have entered 1555 pigeons in the race and were competing for £5301.00 in pools and prize money.
Derek Walsh from County Waterford has had a season of great success having fantastic cards and winning both Skibbereen races this season, 1st Open INFC Old Birds and 1st Open INFC Young Birds, not sure that was ever done before, don’t think it was, although Derek Walsh is well placed to give it another go. The YB winners for 1st & 2nd finished on the same yard, so an equal 1st and added to the OB 1st Skibbereen makes that THREE! In the one season - That will probably never be beat!

S. Casement & Son – (Newtownbreda)- winning 4th North Section 14th Open Skibbereen
At 4th North Section were The Father & Son partnership of Stephen & Aaron Casement who timed their blue Chequer hen the first of their entry of 5 in the race. This hen has been a very consistent racer for the partnership having just the week previously been 30th open in the East Down Combines Skibbereen Derby. A darkened Young Bird she was racing roundabout and breeding is Soontjen x Janssen from birds obtained from their good friend Alex Crawford and they want to take this opportunity of expressing their thanks to Alex for all he has done for them over the years and this line of birds has been very successful for the Casement team with the Grandsire of this hen having won 1st open in the 1st EDC Young Bird Skibbereen Derby in 2017 and this Soontjen x Janssen pair had 6 youngsters this year 4 of which were in the Skibbereen National and all were home .The Soontjen is on the Sire’s side of this hen with the Janssen on the dams.
Cowan & McCartney - (Dundonald)- winning 5th North Section 22nd Open Skibbereen
The Dundonald partnership of Rob Cowan and George McCartney having been enjoying a purple patch having just won the East Down Combine Skibbereen Derby the previous week and this National pigeon, a blue hen, is the sister of the Derby winner and she was also in the Derby result, a race in which the partnership had no less than 7 birds in that result including this hen. The week before that she had been in the Talbenny Cross Channel Derby when she had finished 3rd open, a great performance. A darkness young bird she was racing roundabout and bloodlines here are from two local fanciers Stephen Brown on the sire‘s side and Roy Irwin on the dam’s and the dam has been a winner herself and also bred a Penzance Classic winner.

Congratulations to all the prize-winners from another quite typical Skibbereen race, especially Collins & Douglas topping The Channel Federation. Sid & Jennifer had a fantastic race finishing 1st Channel Fed, as well as taking 1st 3 places In Club. Jennifer also has the bragging rights at Fourwinds Lofts finishing ahead of husband Geoffrey who finished 2nd Channel Fed and behind them in the overall result as well. Banking £73 between them. 3rd & 6th places went to Russell Bros, taking home £21, 4th spot went to Moody Bros ahead of Turner & Abernethy In 5th place. 7th & 8th places were taken by Matthew Russell & Johnny Brush respectfully. That ends, our first full seasons racing after resurrecting The Channel Fed last year. All that remains to say Is Thank You to Everyone for their support all season, Despite the numerous adversities and difficult circumstances encountered almost weekly, we managed to have A Great Years Craic. Hopefully 2022 brings better fortunes for racing and we look forward to getting going again In around 4 months’ time with some new names & faces to add to the excitement. Many Thanks Again Everyone. Robin Service wins 1st MAC in Irish Nat Skibbereen - The final young bird race of the season was the INFC Skibbereen YB National flown on Saturday 18th September. Birds were released at 9.30am in calm conditions. Robert Service & Son of Ballymena & District had the best bird in the local area timing at 14.31pm to win 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 12th North Section and 29th Open National 1555 birds. Robin has the youngsters in excellent form at present having won the last four races in the club. Their winner a lovely blue pied hen was 1st Club in the NIPA Skibbereen YB National last weekend. Her Soontjen sire has now bred them 13 x 1st prize-winners. Their winning hen is also half-sister to their good 5 x 1st Cock and half-sister to another cock that has bred them 2 x 1st Combine winners and a 1st Section B winner. Another half-sister to the winner has bred them another 1st Section B winner. Definitely, an excellent line of Soontjen's. The dam was a gift hen from Jimmy Rock of Harryville and is bred from Jimmy's good 6 x 1st winner. That's 3 x 1st Combine winner's for the Service lofts this season having topped the Combine and Section from Roscrea in old birds and from Tullamore a couple of weeks ago. Excellent flying. Mervyn Eagleson PO. Super job all year looking after the lofts racing in Mid Antrim, supply of both text and photos. Stock Reduction - J Eagleson & Sons have some cocks for sale at £70 each.
