Skibbereen OB National 30/05/23 - 1st Open Jeff Greenaway

It was in 1932 that His Majesty King George V presented a new cup to the Irish National Flying Club to be known as The King George V Challenge Cup and was to be awarded to the winner of the OB Grand National.

The 1932 Grand National race was flown from Les Sables at a distance of some 600 miles and the race was won by R Hawthorn from Ligoniel in North Belfast. This race was flown under IHU rules and it was not until 1948 that the Kings Cup was flown under IHU and RPRA rules. The race in 1948 was won by Sammy Robinson from Belfast.

The Irish National Flying Club have a six race programme for the 2020 season which enables its members to compete in the inland Nationals or over the channel at the very highest level. I hope you will enjoy using the website as it will be a source of information through out the season. Good luck to all members competing in this years Nationals. Ronnie Johnston Patron INFC.

Jeff Greenaway has for a long time been one of the best racing lofts in Northern Ireland now racing the top bloodlines from P & D Racing & Breeding Stud in the UK. 2nd North Section & 2nd Open INFC D Calvin Bondhill Social – Vel 1283.8 flying 130 miles and winning £405.
What more can we add about David Calvin another top position won by his multi award winning family that have scored at the highest level up to 1st Nat. Beat here by just a yard, he had just five birds competing and all five placed.

3rd North Section & 3rd Open INFC Abernethy & Turner Harmony HPS – Vel 1283.4 flying 241 miles and winning £119.
Another top racing partnership that competes both with NIPA and East Down Combine, and to keep them busy they operate a training trailer, so no excuse about fitness. He's yearling blue cock Gabby Vandenabeele x Herman Custer. Been a consistent pigeon having prizes already. He was 70th open East down Combine Skibbereen Classic two weeks ago. He's also same way bred as a cock and hen that's also won. Producing winners for themselves and many others at their small stud.

5th North Section & 5th Open INFC J Gregory & Sons Colin HPS – Vel 1275 flying 248 miles winning £181.
The pigeon finishing 5th North Section for us is a 3-year-old Roundabout cock. He has always been a consistent racer winning many prizes including 1st Club Castletown. This is the third year in a row that he has scored from this race having previously finished 31st and 36th North Section, both steady races. He is a full brother to our NIPA YB National winner from Skibbereen in 2019. The sire is a Lambrecht from Steve Foster, and the dam is from our own family based on M and D Evans Vandenabeele bloodlines which have been winning for us for over 20 years.

1st, 3rd & 4th Middle Section K Allister Monaghan HPS – Vel 1264, 1260 and 1253 flying 208 miles winning £591.
Keith Allister has been racing very consistent in Monaghan, for a number of seasons, many 1sts at Club level and positions in the NIPA up to 1st Section & 1st Open NIPA. He has a great team of birds.

Keith Allister 1st Middle was a two-year-old Cuesters/Verkerk widowhood cock. Previous winner as yearling. 2x1st clubs making section and open result both occasions. Sire by David Sara - Dam by Kevin Hibbert. 3rd Middle blue widowhood hen Hermen Ceusters very consistent pigeon 3x2nd clubs etc. Also 15th section E in NIPA and 36th open Skibbereen National 2023 winning £450 on that occasion. Sire by Syndicate lofts. Dam by Premier stud. 4th Middle Dark Ch widowhood cock, both parents by Ronnie Danckaert of Belgium Via Karl Donnelly. Previous winner of 7th Open Talbenny 11,000 plus pigeons. 5th Section and 21st Open Fermoy 24,000 plus pigeons etc.

2nd Middle Section & 1st Fed B & P McEvoy Castlebellingham – Vel 1262 flying 200 miles winning £50.
Former Kings Cup winners always to the fore in the INFC and many 1st at club level and in the East Coast Federation. Ocean View Lofts Soontjens. The winning hen is Ocean View Hallie. This hen has the best of our winning blood lines in her. She had 5 land races, before the National This hen is ráced on a roundabout system. She has also won 1st Club and 10th Fed St Malo plus 2nd club Sennen Cove Yearling National, 8th Fed as a yearling. Hopefully this hen can go on and win a race out of France for the loft later in the year.

5th Middle Section Steve Dunne & Son Balbriggan – Vel 1250 flying 192 miles winning £25.
Sire is a Peter van Dewere pigeon he won 3 firsts and 4 x 2nd racing while dam is out of a Kit of 6 from Gerry O’Mara. She won the Open in East Coast Fed out of Skibbereen for me. Please thank Wayne Marry for his help with the birds.
1st, 4th, 5th & 6th South Sect R & P Brennan Three Counties – Vel 1222, 1200, 1200, 1200 flying 132 miles winning £93.

Francis Corcoran very kindly recovered me the info from Three Counties. Roly wrote Hi Punch.
The pigeon we clocked Yesterday in the INFC Skibbereen race now has 3 first prizes to his credit, his 2 sisters are multiple prize winners also. Both of them pitched in together to win the Fed open last weekend, so the 3 nestmates were selected for this INFC Skibbereen race. The sire is our famous 602 which won 3 first opens for Tom & Enda Kelly, so we quickly removed him from the race loft in Castledermot and he came home with me to manage his breeding. I paired him to a full dtr of our champion stock hen Margaret of whom you know very well. This hen won St Malo for me and with Margaret getting a bit older, another dtr was retained. 602 is our new jackpot lines from van Vught Donkers and Margaret is from the late Terrence O’Brien, the crosses from these lines are working fantastic so we are really pleased with that. This fella had a brilliant season as a young bird, but never lifted a leg as a yearling, He was left inland because of his young bird performance and now, after another natural moult has helped him no end, he is always one of our first birds back each week, and is now back winning this year as a 2yo, Penzance will be his next assignment in a couple of weeks time. Can I take this opportunity to congratulate the other section winners and absolute 1st Open winner Jeff Greenway. Kind regards Roly.

2nd South Section Anthony Kavanagh Three Counties 0 Vel 1203 flying 133 miles winning £30.
Anthony Kavanagh wrote Hi Fran. Our bird that was second south section yesterday is a two year old Mark Janssen pigeon, bloodlines through Jimmy Hamilton of New Ross. He has been flown on full widowhood and has been a consistent pigeon who has a few club wins to his name as does his father who is still in the race team. We were absolutely delighted with his performance and would like to congratulate both the section winners and the overall race winner Jeff Greenway. Kind regards. Francis Corcoran.

3rd South Section J Hamilton & Son Leinster Premier CC – Vel 1202 flying 115 miles winning £30.
First of all let me say a very well done to Jeff Greenaway on winning the INFC Skibereen national Open and 1st North section. Well done also to Keith Allister who won 1st Middle section and very well done to everyone in this result. The wind was blowing from the east which didn't make this race an easy one for sure but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it from race marking up in Lisburn which as always apart from the long drive was very enjoyably as we always get a good wellcome and Trevor Topping and the lads running the station are always very helpfull to us and as you can imagine when you are bringing up pigeons for different lads it happenes that sometimes there are mix ups, but these lads have always been patient with so thanks to David West and everyone at the marking station. Now to my own section S. With a dead east wind I honestly didn't think I would get a look in but was over the moon the way my own pigeons got stuck into the head wind and got me on the sheet. The winner of the south section was our own Roly Brennan from Carlow who races weekly with Leinster Premier CC. Roly is a top drawer fancier as everyone knows and will always be hard to beat. His winning pigeon has already got 3x1st prizes and is bred direct from his super 602 who has come to the loft to win 3 x1st opens but was beaten by loft mates and because he was such a phenomenal racer Roly removed him from the racing loft in Castledermot and brought him home to his own breeding loft. Roly paired him to a daughter of his champion lines from Van Vought Donkers and Margaret from the late Terence O Brian and this cross is working fantastically for Roly and he says he is well pleased. Roly says that his next race will be Penzance. Well done Roly on a super win and best of luck with him in Penzance. 2nd South section is my very good friend Anthony Kavanagh again racing into Carlow Town. Anthonys 2nd Section winner is a Mark Gerda Janssens pigeon bred from birds that Anthony got from myself. This pigeons father has won 6x1st prizes for Anthony and his brother has 2x1st to his credit. Anthony's pigeon is two years old and had already won 2x1st prizes. Well done Anthony, Rachel and Pa. 3rd south section was myself with "Stoop" who raced his heart out against the wind, I have to say."Stoop" has already won 3x1st open LPCC/LSRF plus many prizes."Stoop" is 100% Mark Janssens. I also had a bird 7th South section and 9th South section also Mark Janssens, so three from my ten entries made the sheet. Well done to John Power & Son who were 8th South section and again with a Mark Janssens from birds the lads got from myself. Leo Conran won 1st in his club in Graignamanagh and 11th South section and his pigeon was also of Mark Janssens bloodlines. Well done Leo and Yvonne All birds highlighted in yellow were in fact all Mark Janssens bloodlines. Jimmy Hamilton PO.
