G & P Brown hit double tops again

The East Down Combine pigeons were back in Fermoy in Co Cork for the seventh race of the season on Sunday 22 May. The forecast for the Saturday had been bad so the weather committee decided to postpone basketing until Saturday night and go for a Sunday race.

The birds were released on Sunday at 12.30pm on a west southwesterly wind, which was favourable for the coastal fanciers again. We have been fortunate with the number of westerly winds we have had this year so far. Looking at the East Down Combine Open result it was another good day for South Down Federation members with 19 birds in the Open result.

The top of the list is an exact copy of last weeks result with Annsborough’s G & P Brown taking 1st and 2nd Fed and 1st and 2nd Open. This is racing at its best. To take 1st and 2nd Open any week is a great result but to do so two weeks in a row is simply magnificent. This win puts Geraldine and Patrick top of the East Down Combine Old Bird Inland Championship with only one race to go. They have another bird at 5th Fed, 11th section, 14th Open and another one just outside the Fed result takes 20th section, 24th Open.

All three birds in the South Down Fed result come from K Rooney & Son Annalong. The sire of the winning pigeon is a Busschaert from Davy Shields and Dtr of the Cragshead club in Durham while the dam is a Janssen and is a full sister of Geraldine and Patrick’s Skibbereen Classic winner from last week.

Their second pigeon was 8th Fed from 1st Fermoy and is a Lindelauf x Bastians Bros cross. The Bastians Bros lines are responsible for Kevin and Kristopher’s Skibbereen Classic winner, while the Lindelauf is off a son of ‘Wonderboy’ and a daughter of ‘Citisser’.
The pigeon at 5th Fed was 10th Fed, 10th section, 13th Open from Talbenny last year and was 4th Fed in the Yearling National. This one is a Janssen x Van Wildemeersch. The sire is a son of ‘Portos’, a winner of the Leeds Amalgamation two years in a row from 480 miles. The dam is a top Van Wildemeersch breeding cock that has bred an Open winner for Billy Higgins as well as many prizewinners for both the Rooneys and Patrick.

K Rooney & Son Annalong are 3rd Fed, 5th section, 6th Open this week in their own right having been responsible for the winners this week and last week for G & P Brown. I noticed when looking through club results that they had also bred the winner in the Larne club, a club with over 40 members competing. The pigeon timed here is a Staf Van Reet with the sire coming from their good friend Mickey McConville, Crumlin. The dam was a good racing hen having been twice 2nd Open from Durrow, as a young bird and then as a yearling. It also has a 5th Open to its credit.

Annsborough’s R J Keown is 4th Fed, 9th section, 12th Open this week and RJ will be delighted that his birds are coming into form with the channel racing just starting. The pigeon timed here is a yearling blue tip hen. She is a daughter of the Meritorious Award winning hen and ‘The Show’ cock. This hen was having only her third race having been unraced as a young bird.

James Cleland Annsborough has three good pigeons in the result at 6th, 7th and 8th Fed, 12th, 13th, and 14th section, and 16th, 17th and 18th Open. James’ pigeons have been racing very consistently in recent weeks. These three birds arrived together with another shortly after. All three in the Fed result are yearlings.

The first is a Pros Roosen from Martin Flynn, Drumaness x Soontjens from Maurice Alexander. These birds have blended well together and have taken numerous Fed and Open positions.
The second bird is the same way bred as the bird that was the only East Down Combine bird timed in the 2009 Friendship National when only 22 birds were recorded. The dam is a Honeysuckle hen while the sire is a Pros Roosen from Martin Flynn Drumaness when paired to a Von Ausche from Maurice Alexander, Harryville.
James’ third pigeon is the pigeon that was 10th Fed, 14th section, 20th Open last week from Skibbereen Classic. The sire is off the ‘01’ cock that was 2nd Open in the Derek Wishart race from Pilmore Beach in 2007 and 4th Open Mallow in the same year. The dam is a Van Ausche from Maurice Alexander.

Tyrella’s S & E McGaw are 9th Fed, 15th section, 19th Open this week as they take 1st club. This pigeon went on to take 4th club from 1st Talbenny. Both the sire and dam are from Jackie Crossan, Downpatrick. The sire is a Braspenning and is a grand daughter of ‘Compass’ while the dam is a Roland Janssen.

The result is completed by Michael Jennings Annsborough at 10th Fed, 17th section, 21st Open. Michael’s pigeon is a two-year-old hen. The sire is a De Klak on loan from Mickey Croskery while the dam is a Wily Jacobs from Gerald Delaney’s Oroory Hill stud.
