Bude - 11/06/11

K Rooney & Son best from Bude

The East Down Combine pigeons were in Bude in the south of England on Saturday 11th June. The birds were released at 7.45am in light and variable winds, with all the organizations liberating together. Weather conditions were perfect with good clear visibility on the channel, however once again the race was somewhat erratic. The early pigeons were spot on the expected time but there were big gaps between birds and at the end of the day there were many empty perches.

There is a lot of talk at the moment about the ‘K factor’, which has something to do with eruptions in the sun which has caused problems with some satellites and which many suggest is interfering with the pigeons homing ability. The problem of erratic racing isn’t something that is confined to us here, as right across the British Isles racing has been quite erratic in recent weeks.
The winners of the South Down Fed this week are K Rooney & Son Annalong who were 1st Fed in this race last year too on the day when they were 1st Open East Down Combine from Bude and 1st Open NIPA from the 5 bird Fermoy. They came very close to repeating their Combine success, as they are 1st section, 3rd Open this week. Kevin and Kristopher had a good race here with another in the Fed result at 5th Fed, 6th section, 12th Open, and another was 14th section, 21st Open.

Their first bird here was a three-year-old hen that has been a terrific racer having been first club twice plus six other club positions. She was 2nd Fed, 149th Open Yearling National in 2009 and 3rd Fed, 58th Open INFC Skibbereen National last year. The sire of this bird is a Lindelauf that was 2nd Open East Down Combine from Thurles as a young bird and has bred many prizewinners. The dam is a Van Reet that has been twice 2nd Open and had 3rd Open in racing so a fine racing pedigree here.

Kevin and Kristopher’s second bird is out of ‘Kristopher’s Loft’ and is a yearling hen that has only had 4 races altogether. The parents of this pigeon are from Eros Carboni from Italy, a champion racer there.

Annsborough’s Mickey Croskery is 2nd Fed this week and he too has a good record from this race point at Combine level. He had another good race here with another two birds in the Combine result at 29th and 30th Open. The pigeon timed here at 2nd Fed, 2nd section, 4th Open is a four-year-old cock from the original De Klak lines. This pigeon has a good racing record with many prizes at Open and section level.

G & P Brown Annsborough are still going strong and this week they are 3rd Fed, 3rd section, 8th Open. Having just won the East Down Combine Inland Championship this result will help in their quest for the Combine’s Fancier of the Year. The pigeon timed here is a two-year-old hen whose dam is a Janssen hen from K Rooney & Son, Annalong, while the sire Eamon Dougan’s cock that was 3rd Open from Penzance in 2003.

Tyrella’s Sean Halpin & Sons have a good race here with two birds in the result at 4th and 6th Fed, 5th and 7th section, 11th and 13th Open. The partnership has had a good year in the Tyrella club with many fine results. Their first pigeon here is a two-year-old Soontjens hen from Harmony Lofts that was 3rd Club from the 2nd Fermoy this year and was 9th Fed from Navan as a young bird.
Their second pigeon is a yearling Soontjens cock that is a son of their Open winner from Kildare and a Tony Smyth Soontjens.
Pritchard Bros Annsborough are 7th Fed, also taking 8th section, 14th Open. They had another good bird at 16th section, 23rd Open.
The Pritchards are never far away on the channel and they were telling me that after Penzance they had only lost one pigeon on the channel this year. Not many can say that. The pigeon timed here is a two-year-old Jan Arden from stock obtained from Louella.
Annsborough’s James Cleland is on a great run of form at the moment and has two in the Fed result this week at 8th and 9th Fed, also taking 9th and 10th section, 16th and 17th Open. James first bird was 6th Fed, 12th section, 16th Open from Fermoy this year.
The first is a Pros Roosen from Martin Flynn, Drumaness x Soontjens from Maurice Alexander.

James’ second bird is another yearling that was 2nd club, 5th Open from the Derek Wishart race from Fermoy. Its nest mate was 4th Fed, 8th section 22nd Open from Talbenny as a young bird. The breeding is Pros Roosen x Freddie Vandenheede.

The result is completed by Annsborough’s Michael Jennings taking 10th Fed, 11th section, 18th Open. Like all the other members in this week’s result Michael had another bird in the Open result at 32nd Open. This bird had just four races last year and is a half sister to Michael’s section winner from Nenagh in 2009. It is a Willy Jacobs x Jos Van Der Veken cross from Mr & Mrs Gerard Delaney’s Oroory Stud, in Dromore.
