Sennen Cove Yearling National - 2008

It was in 1932 that His Majesty King George V presented a new cup to the Irish National Flying Club to be known as The King George V Challenge Cup and was to be awarded to the winner of the OB Grand National.

The 1932 Grand National race was flown from Les Sables at a distance of some 600 miles and the race was won by R Hawthorn from Ligoniel in North Belfast. This race was flown under IHU rules and it was not until 1948 that the Kings Cup was flown under IHU and RPRA rules. The race in 1948 was won by Sammy Robinson from Belfast.

The Irish National Flying Club have a six race programme for the 2020 season which enables its members to compete in the inland Nationals or over the channel at the very highest level. I hope you will enjoy using the website as it will be a source of information through out the season. Good luck to all members competing in this years Nationals. Ronnie Johnston Patron INFC.

We need the details of the Top 10 birds for the Race Report and any other Combine/Fed winners associated with the race. Very brief details are good enough and any photos of either the bird, loft, or the fanciers themselves. Deadlines are tight for publication and we endeavour to have new published when fresh and up to date.

NATIONAL SUCCESS FOR PORTADOWN AREA
The Irish National Flying Club Sennen Cove Yearling National was flown on Thursday 12th of June and what a race it tuned out to be for the fanciers of the Portadown area clocking 7 of the first 10 pigeons in the Open Result. The convoy of 4,173 pigeons sent by 829 competing members were released at 7.30am in a North West Wind that was around 18 mph in strength in the North of Ireland, expectations were that the birdage which was up around 800 on the previous year were in for a hard fly with many quoting 10 hours, experience with a lot of the members proved correct with the 1st North Section member timing at 16.55pm, 35mins short of the expected 10 hours. Although the birdage was up by close to 800 the actual pool and prize money only rise by around £200 on last year this was most likely down to the INFC Committee lifting at the last AGM an 11 bird limit that was in place per member for the Yearling National. With the limit lifted for this years race and haven spent 6 hours at the ring marking a lot of fanciers had took advantage of the new rule, although with sending more pigeons most fanciers have a tendency to reduce the pools and spread any set amount out rather than investing more money hence very little change in the over all competing pools and prize money totaling £35,797.

I must congratulate and thank all the workers just not at the marking centre but also the clocking centre's, with the one day hold-over and the subsequent hard race the clocking centre times were clashing somewhat with the NIPA birds going to Bude so it meant some of the workers were no sooner finished their own club business before having to go to the INFC Clocking Centre, Dedication, Loyalty and Hard Work that must be congratulated. The line at the marking centre just never seemed to dwindle during Monday afternoon when I had a chance to look up, although I did see an odd expression that some fanciers maybe thought that they had been queuing to long but, with a stretched work force and up to 6 ringers going at once really we couldn't have done any better, remembering that all the loyal workers behind the ringers aren't being paid they are including myself giving up the hours of work voluntary with many of the regular faces in attendance every time, extended thanks to the non-elected fanciers who nipped in behind during the course of the afternoon to assist you can be assured your efforts were greatly appreciated by all members of the INFC Committee.

I decided with all the activity of sending pigeons to Bude on Thursday evening and then the NIPA Centre's on Friday evening for the 5 Bird Mallow I would leave well alone until early Saturday morning before making contact with the fanciers who figured in the top ten (although made contact with the 1st & 2nd Open lofts on Thursday evening), thankfully with an unblemished reputation I am made welcome were ever I go at any time in any part of Ireland, I can tell you it makes the job of scribing so much easier when you can go direct to the source of success. On talking with many fanciers on Saturday it was a mixed bag some had got, some not, some had got more than half and others them all. You will always get this in pigeon racing, and it will always remain a mystery, the loft that finished 1st North Section, 2nd Open are the very proof of this, as the successful R & G & G Donaldson who race to the same lofts as Hagan & Rowney sent 8 and got none, but then you have Martin Hagan & Brian Rowney (2nd Open) sent 4 and got 2 even though they are the same family of pigeons managed and prepared by the same set of fanciers with the work spread out between them all, so how can you draw a conclusion simply the luck of pigeon racing.

1st Open Owen Kirwin, Gorey on a Velocity of 967ypm.

The Wexford area has enjoyed a long list of success over the years with the Irish National Flying Club and the Yearling National race is no exception. Owen Kirwin will join the long list of Wexford based fanciers who have enjoyed National success, Owen timed his Blue Yearling Widowhood cock at 13.03pm flying 183 miles into the very vibrant market town of Gorey, North Wexford which sits just dead centre between the towns Arklow and Enniscorthy. For Owen it was third time lucky having been placed 36th Open INFC in 2004, 6th Open INFC in 2007 and now 1st National and 1st South Leinster Fed in 2008. His Blue cock now named Creagh Lad is from top Meuleman & Janssen bloodlines with its sire and grand-dam coming through the famous Dobbs Bros of Wexford. Racing on widowhood the winner had six races on the land and Sennen Cove was its first trip across the channel. Many thanks to local fancier Dave Henderson who was 2nd Open in this race himself recently for getting some info and photos of Owen and Peter Lucas of Gorey who was 6th Open INFC sent via e-mail. We look forward to meeting the Wexford lads at the annual prize night in November.

2nd Open Hagan & Rowney Drumcree on a Velocity of 942ypm.

Martin & Phillip have enjoyed unrelenting success since joining the Drumcree Social HPS to race Y/Birds last year, success was enjoyed instantly with 6 x 1st Club's in their first season, this year has just been as enjoyable and successful, with this the partners twice 2nd Open success in as many weeks. Previously finishing 2nd Open in the NIPA Pilmore Beach race a couple of weeks ago. The partners very nearly had their 1st National success in less than 2 years racing. They timed their Pencil Blue hen at 16.55pm flying 302 miles and 1516 yards. The hen has been racing very well on the Jealousy System supplied to Martin and Phillip by Roy Donaldson of the R & G & G Donaldson team who also race to the same lofts as Hagan & Rowney and with some 27 spare hens this year the new system worked out very well . The Donaldson team consisting of Roy and nephews Graham & Gary also finished 2nd Open last week from Talbenny (2) so you could say that this loft shared by two very successful teams of pigeon fanciers are having excellent levels of success. That's 3 x 2nd Open in as many weeks to the one loft sited in the Ballyoran Terrence area of Portadown. The Pencil Blue Hen that has finished 2nd Open in the INFC Yearling National was bred at the stock lofts of the R & G & G Donaldson team, entering the Hagan & Rowney Y/Bird racing team last year along with its nest mate who went on to top the Club from Pilmore as a youngster. The pair are bred down from Busschaert pigeons obtained from R J Dark of Kent.

3rd Open Ron Williamson Bondhill on a Velocity of 940ypm.

Rocket Ron Williamson who in the world hasnt heard of him, without any doubt the best pigeon racer on earth and one that always shows on the big occasion. Ron timed his good yearling Blue W/F Widowhood Cock at 4.59pm winning a cool £1517. The cock had been showing very well and finished 40th Open a couple of weeks ago from Talbenny (1). The Dam of this 3rd Open winner is Champion Lady Helen winner of 1st Open Friendship National for Ronnie, she in turn is bred from Redon Lady who was 2nd Open Kings Cup for the Williamson loft with the parents of Redon Lady none other than Champions Heartbreaker and Maggie Ann all them champions only in one side of the pedigree as for the Sires side Champion Double Top winner of NIPA Opens from Arklow & Talbenny plus countless other top ten NIPA positions. In the stock loft the has been an inspiration breeding just to many class pigeons such as 2nd Open Y/B National, 4th Open Friendship National, 8th Open Kings Cup, 3rd Open Y/B Derby, 21st Open Lamballe, 7th Open Friendship National just to name a few. Ronnie has come close on many occasions to winning Nationals and Opens this is just one example to think he has already 53 x 1st NIPA Opens and 4 x 1st Nationals on his racing C.V.

4th Open Malcolm Livingstone Portadown Inv on Velocity 939.

One of the hardest workers at both Club and organization level also scored very well from the Yearling National. Former President of the Mighty NIPA (2004 & 2005) Malcolm Livingstone is regarded as the back bone of the Portadown Inv HPS, so much so he was in the house making a few phone calls with reference the pending NIPA event from Bude and missed his Yearling Blue Hen when she arrived finally clocking at 4.55pm flying just short of 302 miles. This roundabout hen has now been named ET by Malcolm for as well as lifting a cool £810 in pools and prize money she also lifts the ETS Nom. The hen herself has been a very steady racer this year being the lofts second arrival from Rosscarbery finishing 6th Club and also the 1st arrival from Talbenny (1) finishing 3rd Club. Previous National success prior to this was in 1981 when he finished 8th Open in the Y/B National. Malcolm has always had pigeons ever since he was a young lad, but a move from the country into the town seen a period of absence from them but like many he was to return to the sport in 1975 and has had them ever since. The Livingstone loft sent four candidates to the Yearling National and got all four hows that for flying. The breeding of the pigeon is as follows :- Sire is a 2004 Blue Cock from Brownlee, Nee sons and Ward coming down from a G/Son of the famous Toey coming down from Ritz & Rafity with all the main pigeons in the previous generation including Toey, Remedy, Ransom and Resolve this on one side when mated to Hillside Blue Girl who won 1st Club, 2nd Federation and is a full sister to an U.N.C Winner she in turn is from Hillcrest Caley when mated to Hillcrest Sue Dam and G/Dam of winners all over the U.K, now for the Dam she is a 05 Bred Blue Cheq G/Sire is a Blue cock coming down from Hillcrest Mottle and the G/Dam coming from the lines of Ken Darlington Van Den Bosche when mated a 95 bred Van den Bosche hen of John Geary. Excellent pedigree detail Malcolm and very well done.

5th Open Eddie McKnight Portadown Inv on Velocity 938.

Eddie McKnight makes the headlines once again having won the NIPA Y/B National last year from Talbenny with Blue Jean. This time he finishes 5th Open in the race he loves so well, and he quotes it is a true test for the best yearling pigeons all on a level playing field. You would have to say Eddie is a specialist from this race in the last 20 years he has never failed to clock and reckons he has topped the Portadown Inv some 14 times in that 20 year period, some achievement. This time around Eddie clocked a Cheq Tip Hen at 4.57pm flying 302 miles, she was sent sitting on 12 -14 days and tight she was sitting often sitting longer than the cock and refusing to leave the nest it was this form that prompted Eddie unusually to pool her in the £5 pool both Section and Open which lifts him a cool £906. The breeding of the pigeon is down to good friend John Abernathy of Harmony Lofts, John and Eddie have exchanged youngsters for long enough and it wasnt until the pigeon had scored and checking the paper work did Eddie discover that his good friend had yet again supplied something special she is of Lefebre Dhanens breeding and was one of a batch of four with all the other three still in the loft waiting their turn of success. Eddie would like to thank Vivenne and John for the excellent friendship that seems to have lasted a life time. Eddie got a second arrival at 6.20pm and one further one on the night from an entry of 10.

6th Open Peter Lucas Gorey RPS on Velocity 935ypm.

Peter Lucas is a familiar name in pigeon circles just not in Ireland but more importantly around the world an ardent supporter of One Loft Races he has more times than not flew the flag high for Ireland at the Sun City Million Dollar race sited in South Africa finishing 1st Ireland 70th Open at one time. On home turf he is equally as prolific having a superb record from Skibbereen racing with the Irish National Flying Club in 2002 he was to finish 2nd Open and also topped the South Section from the same race point in 2005. This race was a good one for Peter with no less than three arrivals in the clock the one that figures so highly in the result was bred from Belgium pigeons selected and brought into Ireland by himself. She was a Blue Pied hen who was sent sitting around 6 days on eggs, she was well schooled around the loft in the lead up to this race.

7th Open Paul Dunlop Edgarstown on Velocity 925.

Paul Dunlop can always race a good pigeon and always re-surfaces on the big occasions, just last year he was piped by a decimal point for 1st Open INFC Friendship National. In this race he had six arrivals in the clock on the night timing at 5.06pm, 5.08pm 5.56pm and 7.20pm before setting off for the Centre and on return had two more waiting both clocked at 9.30 pm so an excellent all round performance by the Dunlop loft sited on the Moy Road area of Portadown. The first pigeon home was a Cheq Cock at 5.06pm flying 303 miles he was sent sitting on 10-12 day old eggs and is down from the late Tommy Beckett bloodlines on the Dams side when mated to a G/G/Son of his own O/Bird Derby winner of 1991. Paul races all his O/Bird team on the Natural system gearing more for the long distance racing, the youngster will be well trained but get very little racing opting more to bring them on to the yearling stage before truly testing them in the transporter. This 7th Open pigeon only received a couple of races as a youngster and was showing steady progress this year as a yearling.

8th Open Gregory & Duffy Wicklow South Road Velocity 925.

James Gregory & racing partner Seamus Duffy timed a Natural racing Dark Cheq Cock that lifts a tidy sum of £165 for the partnership, he was sent to the race in fine form reluctant to leave the nest with the eggs starting to chip. Breeding of the 8th Open Yearling National as follows Sire has previously showed himself before on the big stage finishing 151st from the Vannes Kings Cup of 2006 and he is of Huybregt breeding, he in turn was mated to a Ko Nipius Hen that was sourced from the owners of the first ever One Loft Race in Ireland Alpine Lofts namely Francis Corcocran, the hen in particular is coming down from the pigeon that finished 3rd Open in the Europa Classic in 2005. Excellent breeding and not surprising he has finished so high up the result.

9th Open Paul Dunlop Edgarstown on Velocity 923ypm.

Pauls second arrival isnt to far from his first this one is a Blue Pied Hen who was once again dispatched in the perfect nesting condition. She is on the father side a son of Ronnie Nevins (Nevin Brothers) super racer Mills Queen if my memory is correct she was 3 times Kings Cup and had a host of French prizes to her name including an O/B Derby Success. On the dams side she is a daughter of Pauls own good Kings Cup cock who has flown it twice with his best position 34th Open, this one was paired back to his G/Dam to produce the Dam of this 9th Open Yearling National pigeon. Just some more detail for all you distance enthusiasts the Dam of this pigeon and the Dam of Pauls third pigeon home are nest mates, with the 4th and 5th arrivals back to the loft on the Moy Road down from his 2nd Open Freindship National winner of last year. Excellent flying Paul and combined the two pigeons lift you a tidy sum of £1109.

10th Open Ron Williamson Bondhill Velocity 918.

Hard to keep a good man down and when he has them flying boy he can get them from anywhere, this will make the working out of the 2 bird average interesting between these two good friends the winner lifting the Sam Buckley Memorial Cup and how fitting that the late Sam Buckley father of Glen also raced to lofts on the Moy Road, Paul Dunlop is actually racing to the lofts that Ronnie Williamsons father used to race to, also another bit of info that cropped up in all the conversations during the course of the day Ronnie Williamson and Roy Donaldson who bred the 2nd Open pigeon were class mates in the same school (bit like myself loooong time ago). Back to the gallant 10th Open pigeon yet again another Widowhood cock for Ronnie this one a Cheq timed at 5.12pm. Now this 10th Open pigeon is off the Sire of Maurice Wilkinsons Kings Cup winner when mated to Ronnies own Classic Lady who won the Penzance Classic for the Williamson loft, so this 10th Open cock is a half brother of Maurice Wilkinsons Kings Cup winner, Ronnie would like to thank Maurice for his very kind generosity in loaning him the Sire of the Kings Cup Winner. This Cheq cock showed great form last week for Ronnie from Fermoy winning 3rd Section and was his favoured entry in the National getting first cut of the £10 pool. In total he won £3,094 with this one and £1517 with the 3rd Open winner. Great picking and a great ambassador for the sport of pigeon racing in Ireland.
