Derek Wishart Classic - Sat 09/06/12

Derek Wishart Classic race

The Derek Wishart Classic took place on Saturday 9th June. On the same day there was another race from Talbenny and as previously reported G & P Brown hit the double, winning both races. The Saturday morning started off wet and miserable as it has been for much of June. However this was to clear as the morning went on and the birds were liberated at 1pm in a westerly wind.
This has been another tremendous season for Geraldine and Patrick who have had some terrific results at Fed and Combine level.

Their winning pigeon this week, taking 9th Open, is a yearling Busschaert x Marijka Vink cock from pigeons obtained from Annalong’s K Rooney & Son. The sire was 6th Fed, 13th section from 1st Talbenny the previous week and was also 1st Open Fermoy last year. The grand dam of this week’s winner is a full sister of Geraldine & Patrick’s Skibbereen Classic winner last year.
Annalong’s Kevin and Kristopher Rooney are 2nd Fed, 12th Open this week and they have been very consistent in recent weeks followed this up by taking 1st and 2nd Open the following week when the birds were back in Fermoy. The pigeon timed here is a Vink x Lindelauf. The sire is Marijke Vink and is responsible for many winners both for themselves and others, while the dam is a daughter of ‘Wonderboy’. This hen is their number one stock hen, again responsible for many prizewinners for themselves and many others around the country.

Annsborough’s James Cleland had another superb result here with five birds in the result at 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 10th Fed, 19th, 21st, 25th, 26th, and 32nd Open. James’ first pigeon is a yearling cock off the ‘01’ cock, that was 2nd Open in the first ever Derek Wishart race in 2007. The pigeon that was 2nd Open last year was the same way bred.

His second pigeon is another yearling cock and is the Freddy Vandenheede pigeon that was 12th Open from 1st Mount Charles and 2nd Open from 3rd Mount Charles. That’s a wonderful racing record in one season with this bird taking 21st Open here.
The pigeon at 7th Fed, 25th Open is a Pros Roosen x Maurice Alexander Soontjens, and this one is another yearling cock. This has been a very successful cross for James and regularly features in the Fed reports.

James’ next pigeon was his first hen on the day and is another Freddy Vandenheede, being a full sister of his second pigeon.
The pigeon at 10th Fed, 32nd Open for James is another yearling cock from the Pros Roosen x Maurice Alexander’s Soontjens lines.
Michael Jennings is 5th Fed, 23rd Open here and this has been another good year for him. The following week from Fermoy the same pigeon was 7th Fed, 15th section, 16th Open and was 4th Open 1st Fermoy, so he definitely likes Fermoy. The pigeon timed is a Willy Jacobs cock from Mr & Mrs Gerald Delaney’s Oroory Hill Stud. The dam of this cock was 1st club, 1st Fed from Mullingar last year.

Annsborough’s Mickey Croskery is 6th Fed, 24th Open this week in what has been a relatively quiet season by his high standards. The pigeon timed is a two-year-old De Klak cock from their own tried and tested stock. These are the pigeons that first brought the Croskery lofts to prominence.

The result is completed by Dundrum’s J Maguire & Ptrs at 9th Fed, 28th Open. This result followed up on their Fed win from the Skibbereen National. The pigeon timed here is a two-year-old blue cock whose parents were purchased from Philip Boal, Dromore. He has been one of their best racers but unfortunately his sire was lost around the loft.
