Flying into the NW - Fermoy 11/05/13

Post by willie reynolds »

This week saw the birds in Fermoy for the first time this year, and what a rotten day and rotten race it turned out to be. The birds were held to 12.15 pm due to rain at the race point and en route, never mind the strong west winds that the North West birds had to contend with. Not a great day then for racing, but we have to take whatever they throw at us. A long, slow and hard race was expected, and that’s exactly what we got, with the distance of almost two hundred miles to most, taking just over five hours. Many an empty perch again this week I believe when it came to strike off, although a number of birds did struggle home on Sunday.

We will start this week’s report with our section winner Alan Hall, a man who is no stranger to winning sections, or opens come to that. Alan’s winner is a Busschaert hen that actually won the section from Fermoy last year as young bird. A super racing hen by any standard. Alan also takes third, with the ever present Alan Kelly and Kenny Armstrong filling out the result. The full result looked like this 1st and 3rd A Hall 1294, 1270, 2nd and 6th A Kelly 1270, 1170, 4th and 5th K Armstrong 1245, 1194.

Next up, we go to Limavady, where that man Witherow cleans up again. Ronnie takes the first three plus fifth and sixth for good measure. Great flying this week again from Ronnie, who was close to two section wins in a row. The full result for the Limavady club was 1st,2nd, 3rd,5th and 6th R Witherow 1278,1278,1262,1261,1253, 4th Mc Ilmoyle 1261, 7th J Mc Cool 1214, 8th D Johnston 1170. 10 members sent 185 birds.

Up in Strabane this week it’s the Glenn Quinn show, with Glenn taking first and second as well as fourth and fifth. Tony Conway has another fine week, taking third, sixth, seventh and ninth. Super flying by both men on a very hard day. The result then for Strabane looked like this, 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th G Quinn 1208, 1157, 115, 1110, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th T Conway 1118, 1040, 1040, 1010, 8th J Gamble 1037, 10th H Mc Nulty 1002.

For the first of the Derry clubs this week, we will go to the Amelia Earhart club, where Micky Mc Closkey gets a well deserved and overdue win. Micky’s winner this week is a yearling from his Ron Williamson birds and was unraced as a young bird. Well done again to Micky, and the full result looks like this, 1st M Mc Closkey 1208, 2nd and 4th E Quigley 1189, 1137, 3rd,5th and 7th T White 1151, 1130, 1066, 6th J+R Mc Monagle 1071, 8th A Mitchell 1038, 9th J Quigley 1036, 10thC Fox 1016.

Next, on to the Londonderry Club where Leo Flanagan has another fantastic race taking four of the top five positions. The only man to split Leo’s birds this week is John Cassidy who takes third spot. The full Londonderry result was, 1st,2nd,4th and 5th L Flanagan 1194,1163,1134,1109, 3rd J Cassidy 1157, 6th N Murray 1104, 7th and 9th S Gallagher 1066,1017, 7th J+D Kelly 1031,10th B Boyd 1011. 11 members sent 116 birds.

Across at the Derry and District this week, Maxi Chism continues his fine form, making it two wins in two weeks. Maxi is another man whose birds are in great form and he also takes three more positions in the top ten. Colm Mc Conway who is always good on a hard day, takes second, with Jim and Gary Ramsey inching ever closer to the top in third place. The full Derry and District result was, 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th M+C Chism 1188, 1128, 1123, 1108, 2nd C Mc Conway 1159, 3rd and 6th JG Ramsey 1155, 1121, 7th Cooley Bros 1114, 9th S Duffy 1092, 10th P Hegarty 1058. 13 members sent 204 birds.

Last but not least, this week, we go to the Maiden City. A great result this week for the distance specialist’s Concannon Brother’s, Michael and Robert, who also take third spot as well. Pat Mc Laughlin has a good race with second and fifth, with Robert Lyle making up the top five with a good fourth position. The Maiden City’s full result then looks like this, 1st and 3rd Concannon Bros 1149,1129, 2nd and 5th P Mc Laughlin 1138, 1089, 4th R Lyle 1124, 6th and 9th S Quigley, Son + Grandson 1080,1053, 7th P+M Healy 1078, 8th T Morrison 1055, 10th T Rodgers.

Well done again to our Section winner Alan Hall, and well done to all our winners and everyone who took a place.

The top five positions in the City of Derry Fed were, 1st P Maxwell Jnr 1229, 2nd M Mc Closkey 1208, 3rd L Flanagan 1194, 4th E Quigley 1189, 5th M+C Chism 1188.
