Merit Awards Presentation - 03/01/14

It was in 1932 that His Majesty King George V presented a new cup to the Irish National Flying Club to be known as The King George V Challenge Cup and was to be awarded to the winner of the OB Grand National.

The 1932 Grand National race was flown from Les Sables at a distance of some 600 miles and the race was won by R Hawthorn from Ligoniel in North Belfast. This race was flown under IHU rules and it was not until 1948 that the Kings Cup was flown under IHU and RPRA rules. The race in 1948 was won by Sammy Robinson from Belfast.

INFC Merit Awards Presentation Update -

The Merit Awards Presentation will take place on Friday 3rd January in the Dunsilly Hotel Antrim with a 6.30pm start. Tickets for the evening are £10 which includes supper. Guests for the night are John Tyerman from Bracklesham Bay, Ian Crammond from Fontwell and Derek Partridge of Manchester. Derek is a former Manchester City footballer and has spent over 30 years at the club in various guises. He has offered a signed City jersey and other Man City memorabilia for the raffle on the night.

John Tyerman got into pigeons as a boy through his grandfather in Dumfries and has raced pigeons nearly all his life except when he was away for 4 years in Hong Kong. He is a founder member and past President of the London and South East Classic club, and has served on the National Flying Club committee for 9 years. He has been a member of the BICC for over 30 years and is currently serving as President. John tells me that they now have over 1300 members and 33 are from Ireland. John has had ‘reasonable’ success in racing and has cultivated a family of the old Carmichael/Kirkpatrick and Eric Canton pigeons which have won many positions in Classic, National and International races flying in 500/600 miles events. He is also a winner of the Central Southern Tarbes Classic (520 miles) – only 4 day pigeons and then twice winner (2011 and 2013) of the Barcelona Challenge One Loft race, flying 625miles to the lofts in France.
John and Ian have both promised birds for auction on the night and these will be available for collection at the Blackpool Show.

The panel for the moot is John Tyerman, Derek Partridge and W & L McCaw of Dervock Gold Medal winners with the INFC. This has become another very popular night with the INFC, worth a visit.

IRISH NATIONAL FLYING CLUB - Presentation of Merit Awards

The Irish National Flying Club held their second presentation night on Friday 3 January in the Dunsilly Hotel in Antrim. Framed Diplomas were awarded for birds achieving Open results on two occasions from the Friendship National and Grand National Kings Cup races.

The number of awards presented was down from 30 last year to 11 this year but this presentation in only its fourth year has become a very important date in the pigeon calendar. The guests for the evening were Mr & Mrs John Tyerman, Ian Crammond and Derek Partridge. The evening includes a buffet and a quiz panel, which this year included guests for the evening, JohnTyerman, and Derek Partridge, along with William and Leonard McCaw from Dervock.

The evening began with the Helen Marshall and Rosemary Mulholland of the INFC Charity Committee presenting cheques for £3,000 to the NI Children’s Hospice and the NI Adult Hospice, while John Edgar, INFC Show secretary presented a cheque for £1,000 to the Southern Area Hospice in Newry.
Kells & District fanciers presented a cheque for £1,200 to the Macmillan Nurses.

While the winning of these awards are in themselves quite an achievement all these birds are now candidates for ‘Hall of Fame’ or ‘Friendship Triple’ Awards next year.
