Farming Life - Wednesday 23/04/14

The News Letter, now in its fourth century of continuous publication, has come a long way since it first saw the light of day in 1737. On a visit to Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described the longevity of the newspaper as "an achievement in which the people of Northern Ireland can take great pride". Pigeon News is featured in the Farming Life supplement each Wednesday.

NIPA Race/Date
Roscrea 19/04/14 – Lib 10.00am, Wind Lt East/SE

What a story this week, the NIPA on the second race of the old bird season moving on to Roscrea in County Tipperary. Liberation on Saturday was at 10.00am on a lovely day, released in an East to South East wind. It was expected the major winners would be at the top end and that’s exactly how it worked out. The Mourne & Dist a new club based in the Sion Mills area and sending in their first ever race have topped the NIPA. Winner Tony Conway is no stranger to the results having had great success in Strabane. He is still in shock having won 1st Open NIPA with a pigeon named “Champion 85”, a fantastic racer winning for the 8th time. The 3 year old Cheq cock was timed at 12.29pm flying 132 miles to record velocity 1550, racing on Roundabout. His brother had 1st Sect H in 2010 and was 4th Open in the Fermoy 5B Championship as a young bird, he is now at stock and breeding winners. They are the best Braspenning bloodlines.

Details of the many winners would be appreciated along with the club results, especially if the winners win 1st Sect in the NIPA. Only a small number featured last week, those just the ones that were made available. Remember http://www.pigeonnetwork.com has a board for all individual club results that can include a short report and photo each week. It’s there to be used and more important it’s FREE.

The Portadown & Drumcree HPS enjoyed a fantastic result in Roscrea with 10 birds taking Section positions in the first 32 out of 5,096 birds and 7 Open positions in the first 157 out of an entry of 23,881 birds. However, the brilliant performance of Malcolm Livingstone was the highlight. Malcolm chalked up his 4th Section win in the last 5 years and was also 2nd, 7th, 10th, 26th and 31st Section. He was also 23rd, 25th, 61st, and 75th Open against an entry of 23,881. He took the first 4 in the club with an entry of 456 and this will take some beating. The members congratulate Malcolm for this well-deserved success as he not only works hard to win races but as club treasurer keeps the club on a sound financial footing. The Section winner is a 2 year old cock and is from a Sheader Soontjen and a hen bred by Terence McCrudden Coleraine and was purchased at a North Coast Classic sale. The 2nd Section winner, a yearling cock, is a 1/2 brother of the Section winner. Malcolm races his birds on the Roundabout System.

Dixon best in Mid Antrim -

The second race of the old bird season was flown from Roscrea, liberation was at 10.00am in an East/SE wind, leading birds took under 3 hours. It was expected the best birds would be at the top end and Rasharkin lofts had the top places in the Mid Antrim Combine and Danny Dixon was 1st Sect B doing velocity 1540. Danny timed a yearling Black w/f cock from his Lambrechts family of birds. A son of “Heartbreaker” when paired to a full sister of the ace “Superke”. Must mention Ballymena & Dist who at 444 had the most old birds away since 2000 season, it made little difference for Mr & Mrs Sempey won again with a bird that had won as a young bird.

The Champions League competition, started this weekend, updates will follow.
Results after Week (1) – Sect (1) A C & T Tweed 21 Points, M/M Sempey 17 Points, Young McManus & Sons 15 Points plus Purvis & Connolly, H & R McCloy, R H Clements, Scott & Clements and Houston Bros. Sect (2) D Dixon 24 Points, G McDowell 14 Points plus A & N Young, D Craig, D Houston & Son, S Steele, J Millar & Son and Percy Son & Murphy. Sect (3) H Cubitt 23 Points, F J & G Dickey 16 Points, A Darragh 10 Points plus M/M Robinson, G & A Eagleson, T & E Service, J Rock and B Swann & Son. Sect (4) Steele & McNeill 19 Points, Reid Bros & McCloy 13 Points, A McBride 9 Points, J & N Simpson 8 Points, J Smyth & Son 7 Points plus W & J Smyth, Surgenor Brod and Stewart Bros.

Section topped in both Coleraine & Ballymoney -

For the second week the best local bird was timed by Jimmy Hanson in the Coleraine Premier, 1st Coleraine Triangle, 1st Sect A and 2nd Open NIPA 930/23,881. He had a fantastic Race Card and will be more than pleased with 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Sect A and 2nd, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th Open in the NIPA. I understand this latest winner is from his top Lambrechts hen “Miss Heartbreaker” from Danny Dixon the nest-mate of his “Heartbreaker. At the weekend these birds produced 1st Sect A and 1st Sect B for Danny Dixon. Next best in Coleraine was D Coyles & Son and Danny Dixon had 1st Ballymoney followed by A & M Boyle.
