Feeding widowhood cocks

Hi, in days gone by the top widowhood men broke down their birds with barley or depurative early week , question is is this method still used or is it better to not breakdown ? Some of the new mixtures such as Gerry Plus or Gaby Vandenabelle are also used in this way.
