Farming Life - Wednesday 07/05/14

The News Letter, now in its fourth century of continuous publication, has come a long way since it first saw the light of day in 1737. On a visit to Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described the longevity of the newspaper as "an achievement in which the people of Northern Ireland can take great pride". Pigeon News is featured in the Farming Life supplement each Wednesday.

Farming Life - Wednesday 07/05/14

Post by willie reynolds »

Last Saturday the NIPA released in Clonmel Co Tipperary, some 25,500 birds were liberated at 12 Noon in a South West wind. They waited on the fog and mist lifting from early morning and ended up getting a difficult race. The forecast for the whole weekend was far from good through till Monday and it was a very difficult call for all those who had decisions to make on liberations. We got another big story from the top end of the country when young Lee McSeveney won his first race in the big Coleraine Premier and with it 1st Open NIPA. “Blue Champagne” his Blue yearling cock racing widowhood lifted almost £100 pools in Coleraine. Lee would like to say a big thank you to all club members and to Karl Murphy a good friend of his dad Jimmy who gifted the dam of the 1st Open winner. She is a direct daughter of the famous “Armstrong Hen” Karl’s No 1 Breeder while the sire was a direct Belgium cock his dad bought him from Belgium. The cocks are trained three times a week from Moneymore and locked up the rest of the day, his dad helps a lot when he’s off work. Last year they bred a 1st Open winner for his dads friend and he told me he would some-day breed me one! Dreams come true!

Blair tops Combine & Section from Clonmel -

What a result for Bertie Blair his 3year old widowhood cock not only wins the Club, he also tops both the Combine and the Section from Clonmel and placed 9th Open NIPA on a very poor race decision that has seen many lofts suffer heavy losses.
This blue cock is a multiple prize winner and won as a yearling. His breeding is Hartog/Van Loon with the sire coming from Chris Houston and the dam from Danny Dixon. The legendary Johnston Eagleson tipped Bertie many years ago as one of
the best widowhood racers, this result just proves it. Congratulations. Liberation in Clonmel was at 12 noon in a South West wind, Bertie timed his winner at 15.10hrs flying 182 miles. Next best was Danny Dixon who has won all four races to date. His 2 year old Blue cock was racing on widowhood, a half-brother to his Skibbereen Nat winner of 1998, the last year breeding from this top Verschelde. He is also half-brother to Cuchullain and grand-son of Danny Boy the Rosscarbery Nat winner. Gibson & Dickey win for the second time in Cullybackey looking now for the hat-trick, and others winning for the first time this season included Chris Moore in Ahoghill and former Nat winner Joe Ramsey in Harryville.

Cullybackey Centre: Details for the Rosscarbery Inl Nat race marking are as follows. Entry fees etc. with club cheque collect Wednesday 14th May from 8.30 - 9.30pm at the Cullybackey club rooms.
