July 2014 - Update

Post by willie reynolds »

July 31st

Another good 25 mile trainer this morning, all the birds came together and then flew for a further 50 minutes, tonight they have flown fantastic and they look an absolute picture, you can clearly see the condition of the birds on our Facebook page, Training result is on the training page….. remember all the birds again came together. Late last night we had a bird return from Hot Spot 1 this belongs to Mark Gilbert so the maestro now has his full team again.

I have been monitoring the weather etc for Hot Spot 2, we will not have a problem on Sunday weather wise, the wind will be a West South West, the problem we will have is that many federations have already cancelled their races on Saturday and are now going for a Sunday liberation, this worries me because of clashing etc, we will still race on Sunday but we will have an afternoon liberation so the birds will not go up before 1.00pm, obviously this is providing the weather people have got it right…..this will hopefully enable us to have a clear line of flight. Annette will have the BBQ going on Sunday afternoon and again refreshments will be available at cheap cheap prices,

I have made out the sheet for guessing the time of the first arrival, its £5 ago with the nearest to the time taking all.

We still have 6 ventures for sale, if you want to be in with a chance of winning big money then grab one before Hot Spot 2, the price increases after this Hot Spot Race, these birds have never missed a trainer and they came well from Hot Spot 1.

July 30th

The result from to-days trainer is on the training page, all but 1 pigeon ( recovering from a broken leg ) the birds came together, best trainer to date, we turned them out tonight and they flew for fun so all seems well health wise, the weather for Hot Spot 2 looks pretty good with a West South West Wind, we will be aiming if possible for a 10.00am liberation, this 90 miler will be a good test for both myself and the birds, we are quite confident they won't let us down but who knows when the strings are cut they have a mind of their own. We will train again tomorrow from the 25 mile spot obviously weather permitting, it is demoralising when you get up at 5.00am and the weather is poor but thats pigeon racing, you only get out what you put in. Pools for Hot Spot 2 are continuing to come in, remember all pool monies are paid out.

I forgot to mention that a bird belonging to the 5 Amigo's returned on Sunday morning around 7.00am, this has now been to the last two trainers.

July 26th

Hi, well fanciers it won't be long now, the birds had a nice warm bath this morning, a very light feed at 11.00am, they are absolutely bouncing, they are very busy in the aviary not just perched up, the cocks are really showing off chasing the hens about, more fanciers visited to-day and commented on the birds condition, lets hope now that they don't let me, you and themselves down, the wind is turning to a West North West, the odd shower is forecast but I still don't think these will effect us, we at Who Dares Wins would like to thank everyone who has supported us and we wish you all the very Best of Luck.

Until Next Time Remember He Who Dares Wins Smile

July 25th

Hi everyone, sorry for the late info but we have had person upon person visiting to-day of which all are welcome, well fanciers thats it, you blessed us with some superb athletes, we have worked our socks off, the birds have been trained hard and performed very well, the birds are in top condition and we are very confident they won't let us down, but we all need a bit of lady luck, the Basket list is on the Race Info page, the birds had a 25 mile trainer this morning and made easy work of it, they flew very well tonight, we will give them a nice warm bath in the morning, this will relax them.

I have checked the weather and i am sure the wind will be North North West, the liberation time will be dependant on other organisations along our line of flight, there may be a few showers around in places but I don't think yet that this will effect us, everyone is welcome, we will have hot & cold drinks & food available at very cheap prices, we have also purchased around 30 chairs so it will be a case of get here early, we will post the liberation immediately on the web site, also you can contact me on 07725209762. We will be having a guess the time of the first birds at £5 ago, nearest to the time takes all……...

I will post a full pools list & £10 Hot Spot nomination list by 6.00pm tomorrow.

New Venture £££££s We have decided to hold a Hot Spot Cash Nom how this works is you pay £10 per bird to enter the cash nom, all the monies will be divided between the 5 Hot Spot Races, we will deduct nothing so all entry monies will be paid out, if supported you could be racing for over £1000 at every Hot Spot Race, so come on fanciers lets boost the £37,700 already guaranteed even more, How to Enter send payment and nominate the ring numbers you are entering, you can enter all your birds there is no limit, or telephone me and I will enter the birds for you, 01773 874194 or 07725209762, best of luck Gary, Annette & Rob.

If anyone does not have an entry in the race you still have chance to grab a venture bird, these birds have been to every training toss and flew very well,

Hot Spot 1…... July 23rd

Hi, well fanciers not such a good 40 mile trainer to-day, I liberated the birds at 8.35am in clear skies and a brisk North Wind, they cleared immediately, upon arriving back at the lofts there was nothing, well I expected it to take them upto an hour due to the wind, a batch of approx 30 arrived after 1hour 31mins, these were quickly followed a big batch, all trapped pretty well, but we were 50 short, the birds have continued to come all day, when landing they don't look stressed at all, so maybe it was not the hawks they could have clashed who know's, we are still 7 short, there will be no training tomorrow, next trainer will be Friday from 25 miles. Result of to-days trainer will be posted at 7.00pm.

Hot Spot 1…... All looks good at the moment for our first Hot Spot race on Sunday 27th, it will probably be a light North East Wind, everyone is welcome, we will have hot & cold drinks & food available at very cheap prices, we have also purchased around 30 chairs so it will be a case of get here early, we will post the liberation immediately on the web site, also you can contact me or ring Lib-Line 09063 656 737. A very good trainer this morning from 40 miles, although the birds didn't trap so good they came superb making very light work of the task, I am feeding quite a heavy mix and the birds just want to fly, I am very pleased with there condition and performances, they will go 40 miles again tomorrow weather permitting.

The result of to-days trainer will be posted at approx 5.00pm,

July 21st

Hi, first I must apologise for the web site being down, I was assured this would not happen, it was again something out of my control. We had a trainer yesterday afternoon and the birds came well, we trained this morning and the birds again came well but we have 3 missing, two injured birds did not go training and we have just had two more back one with tail flights missing so again they were struck at, I will move the birds tomorrow to 40 miles, training result will be on the training page at 4.30pm.

Go onto Facebook & select Who Dares Wins One Loft Race, watch the birds trapping from this mornings trainer.

I hand marked all the birds in the loft yesterday, this will be on the Ring list page later, we had many visitors yesterday and they commented on the birds condition, the £10 nom is going very well, not long now, it will soon be show time.

Myself & Annette were up at 5.00am but what a waste of time, the sky was very heavy although there was patches of blue, I started to clean out and around 5.30am it started to rain so no training, when we did turn the birds out they exercise very well so nothing spoiling, I am very pleased we took the decision not to risk a training toss, from 8.00am to now the weather has deteriorated with full cloud cover, next training toss will be on Sunday weather permitting, I know however quite a few feds have cancelled Saturday racing for Sunday so we will have to be careful, we have received more entries for the £10 nom.

July 17th

What a scorching day, I was up at 5.00am, cleaned 4 sections out, then Annette cleaned out the other sections whilst I basketed the birds, I was taking them for a 30 miler, I was only about 3 miles away when I hit a blanket of early morning fog/mist, the sun had not got up enough to burn away the mist, so it was about turn, I bought the birds back a couple of miles and tossed them around 25 miles from home, of coarse they made very light work of this it took them just 27 minutes, now the problem was trapping them, I arrived home and there was a great batch flying showing no interest in coming into the loft, but after a couple of minutes most did trap, we did have a few which just wanted to go & go.

This afternoon it has been very hot so we gave them an open loft to do as they pleased, well up they got and flew for over 40 minutes, cocks clapping and showing off, the birds really enjoyed themselves, to-days trainer will be on the training page at approx 7.30pm, I will be training in the morning from 30 miles weather permitting, more fanciers have entered the £10 Hot Spot Cash Nom…………….

July 16th

Well, all I can say is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, the birds were basketed at 6.30am this morning for their stiffest test yet the 40 miler, I arrived at the liberation point at 7.50am, I telephoned Annette at 8.15am and told her to start the ETS, the birds was liberated immediately after the phone call, they cleared in seconds heading straight for home, as I came up the A38 i could see a batch of pigeons going around, I arrived back at the loft at 9.15am Annette & Rob were trying to get them down, a few had entered the loft but the birds were just full of flying, we did finally get them down, when looking at the training flight result don't worry all the birds came together, I was perhaps a little heavy on the feed last night, but when you work birds like we do they must have something in the tank. Take a look at the Facebook page watch the birds trapping. I will train the birds again in the morning not sure yet if it will be from 20 or 30 miles, the birds are bouncing all the visitors to-day commented on their condition. I turned them out this afternoon and they flew for 1hr & 35 minutes going all over a great sight to see. TODAYS TRAINER WILL BE POSTED AT APPROX 6.30pm.

We did have just one casualty, a pigeon which had hit something and bruised its foot and spit its nail, we put its foot in ice and i will be applying Witch Hazel 3 times a day, when I was boxing after a fight I always bathed my hands and eyes in Witch Hazel it brings out the bruising very fast, we have continued to do this with any bird which hits the wires etc and skins itself or in this case bruises its foot, I am sure this bird will be back in the team by Monday, we have informed the syndicate of the situation.

We have had more interest in the £10 Hot Spot Cash Nom so everything is looking good, now is the time to snap up a venture bird they have passed their stiffest test before the first hotspot, we have had quite a number of visitors to-day all of whom are very welcome, the place is buzzing with excitement lets hope things continue on the positive side.

Hi, we had another good 30 mile trainer this morning, I was up at 5.00am cleaned out and basketed the birds, they were liberated together at 8.00am in patchy blue sky and cloud, a light west wind, we had 9 birds come straight out of the top side taking just 43 minutes they were well clear of the batch, my thoughts are that a Joey had again struck at them, but they are all back safe with no casualties, so that is now 2 tosses at 30 miles, tomorrow they go to 40 miles weather permitting, this is as far as we will train from, the birds look great and are full of beans, lets hope they perform as I know they can.

We have had a fair bit of interest in the £10 Hot Spot Cash Nom read below to see how this works but if all birds were entered for e.g it would make an extra £1000 per Hot Spot Race, fanciers are now starting to activate their reserve birds, quite a few have entered pools already plus I have sent out quite a few pooling sheets so there is a lot of interest, as you can see from the training flights the venture birds are really coming well, remember you have to be in it to win it, this is the richest One Loft Race in the UK & Ireland a guaranteed £15,000 1st prize, so don't drag your feet get a venture whilst they are available.

Because the birds have performed superb we will be holding our first Hot Spot race as planned on Sunday 27th of July. To-days trainer will be on the training page at approx 7.00pm, I have been very busy to-day quarterly VAT returns due must not upset the accountant……….

We are now showing videos on our Facebook page….. go to your Facebook page and select Who Dares Wins.

July 14th

Hi, we trained the birds this morning, they were all liberated together at 7.50am in beautiful sunshine, there was a steady west wind, the birds came superb and made light work of the task, the result will be on the training page at approx 2.00pm, please IGNORE the first pigeon this is from yesterdays trainer and not to-day, we still have 2 birds adrift, I hope the hawk has not had these, another 30 miler tomorrow if they come O.K I will move them to 40 miles.

You can view the birds trapping from to-days trainer on Facebook, go to your Facebook page and select Who Dares Wins, keep the positive comment coming, we will continue with the pictures and videos on Facebook.

July 13th

Hi, the birds were trained this morning from 20 miles, not ideal conditions the birds were liberated at 7.05am and they made light work of it, you will see from the times many messed around on top of the loft, cocks chasing hens then cracking up and clapping, we did have 3 birds missing but one has just landed as I am updating the site, we do have a casualty however, bird Ring Number GB14N20210 has hit the wires and is in the quarantine loft, this bird will definitely miss the first hot spot race in 2 weeks time. The birds will be moved on tomorrow to 30 miles.

July 12th

Hi, what a day, busy, busy busy, as promised I hand marked all the birds in the loft, it appears that the Peregrine strike on Tuesday did some damage, we dropped 5 birds, these are GB14N59693 belonging to the Dare Devils, GB14P03429 belonging to the Saw-yeds, SU14P3957 belonging to Scotties, GB14N18816 belonging to The Sportsman Team & GB14S37721 belonging to Workman, most of these were from the A team so I would not right them off yet.

On the plus side we have had birds return from the smash of two weeks ago, these have been rested but have now been added to the main loft, the birds are GB14P05743 & GB14Z78337 both belong to SW Fairways, I know Steve has some very tough pigeons last year after two hotspots in the Sun City he was to only fancier with all his entries still there, GB14S63280 belonging to Sundaynighters I hope this put a smile on your face Ralph, GB14A22885 belonging to T.P Wainwright.

The birds are all basketed ready for tomorrow morning, we fed them in the crates and they have water on, I will load them onto the federation transporter later, it will be the first time they have been liberated all together so fingers crossed, if all goes well tomorrows trainer will be the last from 20 miles, on Monday it will be 30 miles, it looks like the tunnels we have put on the traps have sorted everything, I will continue to monitor things. The new loft list will be on the ring list page around 7.00pm, further update tomorrow night regarding Sundays trainer.

July 11th

The birds were trained this morning from 20 miles, not ideal conditions only the odd patch of blue sky, the cloud was dark and not much wind to move the cloud, the birds came very well and made light work of the poor conditions, when I returned the birds were still flying, they flew another 45 minutes, no training this afternoon I have to take our boxer bitch to the vets she is 12 years old now and is not looking to clever, I will exercise the birds around the loft, only a light feed tonight because we want them to eat in the baskets tomorrow.

So after hand marking the birds tomorrow they will go into crates and this is were they will be fed & watered, they are being left in the crates over night and weather permitting I will train them early Sunday morning, just got to watch if there are any holdovers, I have just jet washed and disinfected all the crates, feeding & watering troughs, we have had a good week so lets hope the birds continue progressing.

Our federation birds were liberated at Saintes this morning at 6.30am, it will be a tough race and I don't think there will be many if any day birds, most fly a minimum of 500 miles, best of luck to all fanciers who supported the federation.

To-days trainer is on the truing page

July 10th

A great day to-day, nice steady North Wind, we again trained the birds morning and afternoon from 20 miles, they came well but most just wanted to continue flying, we are now feeding Natural Professional Mix, this had been specially mixed by Natural for us, my good friend Sheldon Leonard from Arklow put this mix together for Natural, it is superb, they really do want to fly on this mix.

I will be hand marking all the birds again on Saturday plus giving them all a little tonic, we will then publish a new Loft List, this will be done again on the 19th July, we intend on Monday to move the birds to 30 miles, they will only be trained once a day hopefully in the mornings, if things go to plan we hope to have them at 40 miles by Thursday.

We have two new sponsors on Board, Direct Pigeon Supplies from Arklow owner is Sheldon Leonard a top pigeon fancier in his own right, I am a personal friend of Sheldon and have visited him many many times, he has the very best of the long distance wonder birds of Daniel Ariens, I was with Sheldon last year at Daniels Ariens loft and could see how Sheldon is a very close friend of Daniel, whilst on the subject of Ariens birds, well done to Eamonn Kelly topping the section from Tarbes with a yearling Ariens pigeon bred by none other than Roger Lowe….. The other sponsors are Wainwright Haulage from Ashby, Tom & Christine are two of the nicest people you could wish to meet, Tom is a massive supporter of our federation and is a true and honest pigeon fancier through and through, many thanks to both sponsors.

Results of to-days trainers will be on the training page around 7.30pm

July 9th

Hi, another very good day, we trained the birds TWICE to-day, the first one this morning was again from 17 miles, I basketed 273 birds, we do have all 274 but 1 bird upon handling it I felt could do with missing a day so it is in the quarantine loft with some high fibre mix, well the birds again came absolutely superb, the wind was north but it took both teams just 24 minutes, the cocks are landing and showing themselves off big style, on the result you will see 6 birds missing this is again down to the birds trapping too fast, I basketed them again this afternoon and again 273 were there, I took them this time to the 20 mile mark and again let them go in 2 teams giving 15 minutes between liberations, again they came superb bang on line, we did have a few late comers, Daniel Boylan really has a pigeon which is on the boil, it was first in both trainers to-day you can see this on the training page around 7.30pm.

I will be putting the pools entry form on the Pools Sheet page later you can down load this if you have access, anyone who wants a pools sheet please ring me 01773 874194 or 07725209762, On two of the traps tonight me and Rob have put some tunnels this is to slow the birds down thus we should not miss any, I will not put the tunnels on the other two traps until we are happy they are working O.K.

July 8th

Hi, I basketed the birds this morning, we were only 5 short, two more returned this morning whilst I was away one is badly flown out so its been put in the quarantine loft and will be monitored, I decided to move the birds on to 17 miles toss, well they came absolutely superb, I tossed them in two separate lots, Annette said they came bang on line it took the first lot 26 minutes, the second lot took just 21 minutes, the birds trapped very fast so a few missed, Don't worry this will not happen on the hot spot races we have everything in hand, we are not restricting them trapping at the moment. The result is on the training page, IGNORE the first two these are the birds which returned from last night, I have also put GB14C01510 back in the race loft we will see how this birds exercises, we will not train again to-day I am on federation duty at 4.30pm, I will be picking up the birds for Saintes, I myself don't have to drive the lorry to Saintes so this is a bonus, if training continues to progress this week then we should be on target for the first Hot Spot on the 27th July as planned.

July 7th

What a day, trained this morning and the birds came well, trapped really fast thus a few missed, took them to same 12 mile spot this afternoon and not such good news, I let them go in 2 lots, I liberated the first lot and they messed around a little, I watched them going for home when from no-where a Peregrine went straight through them the birds split, I moved away and liberated the second lot, upon arrival home the second batch were back doing a great time just 16 minutes, then the first lot started arriving absolutely petrified, most came as a batch, but as you will see from the times a hell of a lot came as single birds, I will put both of to-days trainers on the training page at approx 9.00pm, we are leaving the ETS running for a little while, at the moment we still have 17 birds missing, the time is 7.30pm. As the saying goes it never rains but poors, we will assess the birds in the morning, with the stress of the last week we have to be careful, the next thing will be the dreaded Y.B sickness, this we can do without, you have to feel for the youngsters they are trying their best, we needed a good week to put them back on schedule.

Until Next Time Remember He Who Dares Wins Smile…………. smiling again for the moment could be tears later.

July 6th

Hi, we had a bird return yesterday from Mondays smash, this belonged to T.P Wainwright we have put this bird in the quarantine loft, I will keep check on it and the bird will re-join the others when we are happy with the birds condition etc.

I did not wait until tomorrow for the trainer, the birds flew well this morning so we decided it was make or break they are no use in the loft, plus what is the race called who dares wins, we basketed all the birds except for GB14C01510, I was not happy this bird had recovered 100% so it has been moved into the quarantine loft and will be monitored over the next few days, I tossed the birds in two lots giving 30 minutes between liberations, Annette was at the business end, after 25 minutes she phoned and said the first lot were back but many were still flying around, I liberated the second lot and raced back, when I returned most of the first set were in the loft, the second lot took just 21 minuted for the 12 mile toss, we do have about 14 still flying, they are landing and then cracking up again, I will cut down the feed tonight, we will train again tomorrow if the weather is O.K.

It appears at the moment that we did make a good decision putting half the A team in with the B team, we have now decided that they will all run together but for the next week I will train them in two lots, fingers crossed lets hope its onwards and upwards, the trainer from to-day will be on the training page at approx 3.30pm.

Until Next Time Remember He Who Dares Wins Smile…………. smiling again

July 3rd

Sorry fanciers but no-more birds home to-day, I hoped to train again this morning but with a strong South Wind we decided it was not such a good idea, we had no fears about the A team birds pulling out but I just thought the ones from the B team would have gone sailing past, the last thing these birds want now is another hammering, so we decided on the side of caution, we have 11 now in the quarantine loft, I will check these on Saturday and feel sure they will return to the racing loft, I have been in contact with the RPRA and we have the facility to delay racing by a week if need be, lets see how thing progress.

More fanciers visited and wished me luck plus they said this is young birds for you, as i quoted if they were my own birds it would have been easier to accept, I know they mean well but it makes it no better, I feel for you the fanciers who have put your trust in us, but we must continue lets hope it is onwards and upwards, not much more I can say at the moment, can't see us training tomorrow due to rain forecast over night.

Until Next Time Remember He Who Dares Wins Cry ( yes still crying )

July 2nd

We have 10 more birds back to-day they have been moved into the quarantine loft and will now be built back up and put in the racing loft on Saturday if I am happy with their body weight etc, spoke to a few fanciers and it appears they also suffered loses on Monday, I would like to thank all those who have rung giving us encouragement, as pigeon fanciers they understand that you never have youngsters until they are 100 miles down the road, I am a hard task master and believe youngsters must be trained hard, lets hope this is our only set back.

We have made a major decision this evening, we have split both teams, so now 50% A team have 50% of the B team with them, so we still have two teams but they are mixed 50% & 50%, we trained the A team twice to-day, they are well in advance of were we should have them at this stage, so we will drop them back now to 12 miles this will hopefully put the B team birds on track, we have put split rings on all the B team birds in with the A team, tomorrow they will be trained from the 12 mile spot hopefully the A team will bring them on the right line of flight, we are doing this to give the B team birds some confidence, not much more I can report just hope more birds turn in, thanks again.

Until Next Time Remember He Who Dares Wins Cry

July 1st

Hi, well I am lost for words, the A team trained Monday & Tuesday no worries at all this afternoons trainer is on the training page, but the B team a total disaster, we flew them for over an hour yesterday morning, basketed 177 birds and took them just 5 miles, the reason for only taking them 5 miles was to give the younger ones a better chance plus to get some confidence into them, this team had never roamed as much as the others but still they were going for over a half hour so they had seen around the area, we liberated them at 11.00am, after 4 hours we got just 1 bird, over the next 6 hours we had another 25 all returning in singles, to-day we have 51 returned again all in singles, what can I say, we have done all we could but I know this does not make things any better, we will now rest these birds for 2 days and try and build them back up, all will be hand bathed in hot water and thyne herb to restore the muscles etc, I can only apologise but I don't see what I could have done different, yes maybe I should have pushed them to the 12 miles starting point but I did what I would have done with my own birds.

On Saturday we will publish a new Loft Inventory, then you will know as we will what is hear, tomorrow we will take the older birds to a different liberation point approx 16 miles, lets hope this is our only set back, trust me I am gutted.
