Micko’s Independent Fed Pictorial Talbenny Y/B Derby

Sunday the 31st of September seen the Fed in Talbenny south west Wales for their Young Bird Derby that’s roughly about 200 miles from Belfast and a big big channel of water between there and home today I was lucky enough to meet with one half of the winning team BUT not only were they the winners but they also took 2nd, 3rd. 11th, 15th, 21st, 26th, 29th, 42nd, and 49th, that’s 5 positions in the top 20 and the birds that took 1st, 2nd and 11th places were all brothers some winning there and all from the same family 10 positions in the top 50 what would be the betting on a result like that so who was the winning team that’s down to the West Belfast team of Mark Johnston & Son (William) Sunday turned out to be a mixed day for the team clocking in the Y/B Derby then William sustained an accident that put him in hospital thank God it wasn’t as bad as doctors first thought so where did it all start for Mark it started many many years before because Mark is a 3rd generation fancier and he’s passing it all down to his son William Marks interest in the birds started with his grand father Robert (Bobby) Russell Bobby just didn’t pass his love of racing onto Marks father William who was a son in law but to his uncle Robert also Bobby in his day was 1st and 3rd open with two brothers from Penzance and their sir was Seapark a cock which had won 2 opens and 2 X 2nd opens and countless top ten combine prizes Marks uncle R E Russell also raced but he was more into the distance and was 10th open Donard and always scored very well in the French races so then a young Mark came along and his father William after learning from his father in law started to race as W Johnston & Son and they were a very successful race team at 23 years of age they won the combine 1st 2nd 4th open on the day with 4,600 birds released ( Navan ) and Mark and William had 6 in the top 40.
Then like most in life Mark meet a girl had his son William in 2006 and started to race as Mark Johnston & Son 2010 in the Bude Open they scored 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 10th the following week The Penzance Classic they scored 1st, 5th, and 17th with a bird called after Marks grand father Bobby’s that was also the bird that came 2nd Bude the week before and called Bobby’s Boy because his granda has won the same race many years before with the East Down Combine and that’s just some of Mark and Williams winnings

Now it’s always nice to see others winning with either bird that were gifted or sold by you Franko and myself were at the lofts of Davy and Leeanne Mc Ilhome Davy and Mark are good friends and would loan and gift each other birds
Davy past comment about birds on loan that had scored well for him one of the gifted birds a young ash won the club and also took another 4 cards
Lilley & Whiters had a gifted bird that won 2 section D NIPA and another hen for the same team was 36th open INFC Yearling National

Myles Taylor got birds one scored 3 X 1st prizes and another bird scored 2nd section D NIPA from Bude winner and 3rd section D from Talbenny
Mark and William also bred the Kingswood breeder / buyer winner the following year they bred the bird that came 2nd
B Hogg & Son were 1st club 1st section 3rd Open Combine with a bird that was bred for them that bird also took 4-5 open positions as a young bird

Now that’s just a quick run down on M Johnston & Son as Mark has agreed to do a short video for us after the racing so something to look forward to from the reports that I have been doing you will know I ask fanciers the breed of the birds they are winning with and when I asked Mark what family they were winning with a wiry smile I was told they are all
MARK & WILLIAM VAN JOHNSTON’S
To Mark and William from all of us very well done great result
Mark with their 2014 Talbenny Y/B Classic winner
