Farming Life - Wednesday 08/07/15

The News Letter, now in its fourth century of continuous publication, has come a long way since it first saw the light of day in 1737. On a visit to Northern Ireland, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described the longevity of the newspaper as "an achievement in which the people of Northern Ireland can take great pride". Pigeon News is featured in the Farming Life supplement each Wednesday.

St Malo Nat success for Speirs & Campbell -

The Premier Old Bird National for the NIPA was flown on Thursday 25 th June, with all other Irish racing organisations at St Malo (France), they liberated at 7.00am, there was no wind at release point and they had blue sky and sunshine right up to Camborne which is approximately 25 to 30 miles north of Penzance. It was also crystal clear in Bude with no wind at this moment, in Fishguard there was full cloud cover with a fresh southerly wind and visibility unlimited. The wind was to pick up on route as the birds come north, to go force 4 or 5 southerly later and the sea state slight to moderate, visibility moderate to good. There was some light rain forecast at the home end and a pretty hard race was expected. An early bunch of birds made very good time and birds were recorded on the day to the far north. Overall winners out on their own were the long distance loft of Speirs & Campbell of Cookstown recording velocity 1471. A second bird doing velocity 1387 finishing 8 th Open NIPA might secure the 2 Bird Average. See the photograph includes the winner of the recent St Malo 2015 race, a Blue Pied hen - Busschaert - name “St Malo Express”. The other bird is a Blue w/f cock, containing blood lines from Gilmore & Beattie and Chris Bell of Cookstown, this bird finished 8th Open, 2nd Section \'A\'.

Congratulations to Roy & Jason from all the members of the Windsor Social.

NIPA Sect H Clubs

Amelia Earhart – E Quigley 1078, N Cassidy 702, N Cassidy 485. Congratulations to Eamon Quigley on winning the club and being placed 3rd Section H from St Malo, with his Chequer cock that Eamon timed on the day flying 508 miles with 13 hours 47 minutes on the wing. Breeding of the cock goes back to Eamon\'s good T & P Cassidy Kenyon bloodlines. The dam of the above cock has now bred 2 x 1st France and 1st Penzance only bird on the day. Sire of the cock is Brian Denney, Tuff - Nutt lines.
Great result Eamon, more success at the distance. Taking 2nd and 3rd Places in the French race is Niall Cassidy, pictured holding the 2 birds with his father Robert. Niall only flies to one 12 x 6 loft and sent 2 birds to France and clocked both on the second day. These two birds are a mother and daughter. The mother is a granddaughter of their own 2 French cocks crossed with Martin Healy\'s French birds. This hen was then paired to a brother of John Cassidy\'s King Cup hen to produce the hen that was 3rd place. Great flying Niall

We had the very sad news this week that Tom Cotter had passed away at home in Cullybackey after a short period in hospital. The King as he enjoyed being called was an ace racer going back many years, winning top prizes in all the clubs he raced in including Harryville, Randalstown and Ahoghill. Not only could he race a bit, he enjoyed the Show Season and was often called to judge at the various local events. In 2013 he covered the Eye-sign Class at the Ballymena & District, he was a big follower of this subject and enjoyed the debate and craic big time. The King will be sadly missed, sincere condolences to his partner Rosemary and the girls Alicia and Amanda, and the entire Family Circle.
