City of Derry Update –

Amelia Earhart Averages: With the final two weeks of old bird racing fast approaching, the averages competition within the club has finally gained a clear leader. The previous 4 or 5 weeks it was neck and neck between Lexie McCloskey and Noel Doherty only having a few points between them. Eamonn Quigley put in a fantastic performance in the yearling National taking First position in the Hens and First and Second position in the Cocks to bring him up into 3rd spot knocking William McCloskey out of the top five. For his first season in pigeons and winning two old bird races, it was a great achievement for William in his first year.

Going into the 10th week of racing, the top 2 men in averages sent bird to both races. 10 members sent 58 birds to Fermoy. Speculation as to how the race would go having a slight southerly wind grew and we expected a reasonably quick race. With Dohertys performance over Ireland, and having already won a Fermoy, one would expect him to go for another win. However you could not rule out the dark horse Lexie McCloskey with previous wins over Ireland and a fantastic channel result winning the two Talbennys; it was any mans for the taking. It turned out that\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s exactly what it was and the winning loft, taking his first red card went to P & S Campbell of Leafair and taking the first 5 points, clocking their bird at 17:20. This bird was also 4th Section H. Not to be out done, Noel Doherty took 2nd and 3rd Spot accruing a further 7 points to take the edge over Lexie.

The Penzance race was looking bleak for the birds as the heavy rain, thunder and low cloud set in shortly after the Fermoy birds. With 6 men sending 12 pigeons we anticipated that it was going to be a tough race, and with adverse weather conditions and a late liberation on Saturday, it would have taken an extremely brave and gutsy pigeon to make it home before night fall. Unfortunately, no member clocked on the day at the club, and the race ran over until 12 noon on Sunday. Anticipation grew high for the birds making their way home as only one bird was clocked in the town during race time. Doherty however managed to take the advantage slightly further over Lexi, clocking is white saddle back Rapido Busscheart bred and gifted from Mr Teddy Millar of the Foyle RPS on Sunday morning at 08:17. This Rapido Busscheart pigeon has performed well for Doherty last year over the channel, and it was with a big heart he got up on Sunday and made his way home.

The top five as it stands with only 3 races in old birds left are: Noel Doherty 42, Lexie McCloskey 28, Eamonn Quigley 17, Gerard McGlinchey 16, Jimmy Quigley & Son 16.

North West review –

The winning pigeon for Diamond Brothers, best in Coleraine Triangle is a Blue hen racing on the Roundabout System. As you can see in the club result she won Coleraine Premier by a street. She was a group of youngsters sent over by their good friend Andrew Nehsholme of Liverpool and she is a Vandenabelle/lemmens pigeon. This line from Andrew has already bred the lads a NIPA 1st Open winner in the short space of time they have had them. Well done lads on a super fly.
