City of Derry News –

Amelia Earhart Young Bird Averages - With the racing season for young birds well and truly underway, the battle has commenced for the points and the £50 prize to the fancier with the highest at the end of the season. The first area lib saw 107 birds sent, released at 11:30am into a light to moderate Southwest wind. The weather was favourable for the birds and a quick race was expected. The birds arrived in their droves and it was quickest off the roof to claim first prize and 5 points. It was a tough, close battle with less than a few yards between the top 3 but the winner came from the Leafair lofts of P & S Campbell where they also secured 4th and 5th position, taking a total of 8 of the 15 points.

The second area lib went back to Mullingar. Fanciers had high expectations of a repeat of the previous week as strong South, South East winds were predicted. On the day it turned out the winds were extremely variable and the 245 pigeons that were sent, were spread so thin over the ground and members endured some big losses. The Elaghmore lofts of M&M Rabbett and Noel Doherty saw the first 3 birds ten minutes before the rest, and again it was quickest off the roof. Anyone watching must have thought these two guys where off their heads as frantic calling, whistling and occasionally profanity at the birds commenced – it’s true what they say, there is wiser eating grass!! Noel Doherty managed to get his two birds on the clock first taking 1st and 2nd ahead of the Rabbett’s for 3rd. Doherty also claimed another position taking 10 points in total.

Let the Real Racing begin now we all thought, as the first mass liberation saw the club send 101 pigeons to Tullamore. A strong North NW wind put a few members off sending but never the less the race continued. A slow but steady race was anticipated with the convoy setting off at 10:30 from the racepoint and the inform lofts of P&S Campbell where the ones to watch due to the previous two weeks results and returns. Clocking two birds just before the 3 hour mark, they set the stage for 1st and 2nd position, with Andy Mitchell also in Leafair battling for a 3rd.

Going into the fourth race, all eyes were firmly set on P&S Campbell as the one to beat. 133 birds where shipped off to Roscrea being liberated at 9:30 in a Southerly wind with high cloud and favourable weather. Not to be out done after last week and with his sights set firmly on the points, Noel Doherty sent a full team to try and secure a further few points. With the southerly wind, a fast race was expected, but dubious at the potential over shooting of the birds; Doherty clocked his Chq hen which appeared to come from Donegal at 12pm. With no other birds in sight coming into the loft for over 10 mins, the sweat was on to see who else has clocked. William Mc Closkey put up a good fight for first position clocking his bird at 12:01 and P&S Campbell at 12:04 but the Elaghmore loft of Noel Doherty proved no match for the two, winning the race by 11 yards pm. With a total convoy of 20,611 pigeons, of which 1195 came from section H, the 3 men are sitting proud after their result. Noel Doherty was 8th Section and 138th Open with his winner, William was 12th section 237th open with his 2nd club pigeon, and 3rd club which went to P&S Campbell was nudged just outside the open positions awarded but 20th section. Congratulations men, super flying!!

As ensued this has yet again left the averages in a fierce battle for 1st spot. The inform leafair loft of the Campbell’s are the current leaders on 22 points, with Noel Doherty creeping up like a cat to pin first spot on 19 points. These are well ahead of M&M Rabbett on 8 points and Andy Mitchell and William McCloskey joint 4th on 4 points each. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season turns out with a total of 7 races left and a whole new race point next week!!
