Homer's Odyssey/BHW Plus - 12/06/09

Post by willie reynolds »

What a weekend after weather conditions earlier in the week that were better than many of the holiday resorts, races were cancelled and others re-arranged. East Down Combine went to Talbenny and the birds were returned to Ireland and released on Sunday in Thurles. NIPA who also had Ulster Fed and East Coast Fed (Dublin) on board sat it out and have been released early on Monday morning in good conditions. We hope the long wait in South Wales is rewarded with a wonderful race, the Fermoy convoy were released early on Saturday morning and ran into a lot of rain at the home end. Winning velocities were well down and returns were not too good either although a lot of the missing birds should be able to make home in improved conditions. Its an impossible task, some members thought the NIPA should have released on Sunday in Talbenny despite severe high winds, strong NE on the Irish Sea. We will never know how that would have went, we will see if the decision to wait at Talbenny until Monday was the best one. Report is a lot shorter this week, next time we will have the details from Talbenny (2), the INFC Yearling Nat is due to be flown Wednesday and at the weekend the NIPA will have two races again. The Bude birds will be collected Thursday and the Mallow 5 Bird Championship birds on Friday, thats the plan. We will see how it all works out, good luck to all fanciers competing in the big Yearling Nat from Sennen Cove. As we go to press I have the confirmed liberation in Talbenny on Monday at 7.30am in a Lt North East wind. The sun is out, blue skies and the sea is calm, everything looks set for a perfect race

Mid Antrim results are not complete, we must run with what we have got to meet the various deadlines. With the level of work being done there is no guarantee late results can be listed, we really dont have the time to keep going back, its hard enough keeping up to date. The NIPA Open & Sect Results are printed as they become available and at that time we edit club results, they really must be there to be listed. We just cant go back for every single missing one, please put them in on time to both Homer and the NIPA. Best in Sect B appear to be D & G McMullan from Ballymoney who had won earlier, winning velocity this time was 1105 after timing at 11.56am flying 214 miles. Mid Antrim had a close finish with Milliken & Barkley almost unbeatable in Rasharkin and having another super card doing velocity 1089, a yard ahead of W & J Smyth who are having a fantastic season in Ballymena & District. J & N Simpson have 1st Broughshane (1072), Gary Gibson 1st Cullybackey (1054), Surgenor Bros 1st Kells (1053) and Davy Logan fresh from success at Talbenny having another top card including 1st, 2nd & 3rd Randalstown (1045).

Another good win for the loft of Johnny & Norman Simpson. A Blue Cheq yearling hen down from the late Jimmy Logan Ballyclare cock and a Martha Van Geel hen. This old pair always produces a winner for the partnership in these hard flying days. We all have our methods of flying old birds but wait for this one. She has never been mated to a cock in her life flying one hour in the morning and one hour at night to the perch and mated to Johnny, never in a basket except going to the race. How about that!

Not sure just how many clubs were involved with the comeback race from Fermoy, best in East Antrim yet again will be the high flying Campbell & Bigger team from Glengormley who are having another season to remember. Few lofts are flying better, or more consistent, they have won the NIPA Sect C Fancier of the Year and are on tract to repeat that feat. So far they have had a host of top positions including now in this last race 5 x 1st NIPA Sect C awards. Hugh was telling me this latest winner timed at 11.18am was the same Blue Cheq cock that won 1st Sect in last seasons Mallow 5 Bird Championship. The weekend winner will be up near the top of the NIPA Open result.

Willie I'd just like to thank you for the coverage you have given Dollingstown HPS over the years as it was officially dissolved at the second meeting held on Monday 1st June under RPRA rule 163, the RPRA and NIPA have been notified by letter so therefore no results can be published as the NIPA dosn't have individual membership as you must be in a club. As only one loft was competing during 2009 it isnt practical to keep a club going for that, so in the mean time many thanks, Davy.
