With another full house at the Templeton Hotel in Templepatrick the NIPA Chairman Alan Darragh welcomed all those attending and introduced the guests who included local MLA Robin Swann and his father Brian from Kells in County Antrim. They were joined at the top table by NIPA President Robert Reid and family also RRRA Irish Region Secretary, and NIPA Vice Chairman Sammy Thompson. Also present the Secretary of The Irish National Flying Club Trevor Topping and family, and Mr & Mrs Beattie who sponsored the Fermoy 5 Bird Championship. The main sponsor for the 2016 season were Frazer Animal Feeds. Sammy Thompson said grace and following an excellent four course meal the NIPA Secretary and Assistant Fred Russell and Gregory McEvoy assisted at the big presentation. What a job they had in hand getting everything ready for the big night, invaluable work over many hours. Fred has asked that all trophies and cups be returned in early August next year to enable an assessment to be carried out of their condition, especially the older ones. Great care needs to be taken with the cleaning of the cups, no wire wool or Brasso to be used.
In the local Mid Antrim Area Alan Darragh from Cullybackey secured the Les Mairs Memorial Cup for 1st Sect B St Malo OB National, B Fox Cup, and Sect B Fancier of the Year. Racing in Crumlin & Dist Thompson Bros had Champion Old Bird and Champion Young Bird and Danny Dixon picked up a Bronze Diploma for a bird scoring in the OB Nat twice, this one was hatched from an egg brought back on one of his many trips to Belgium. Local lofts topped the Open in both Area Liberations for Young Birds, F J & G Dickey from Randalstown were 1st in Mullingar (1) and Blair & Rankin 1st in Mullingar (2), both collected Diplomas. In the Old Bird racing Young McManus & Sons from Ahoghill won 1st Open NIPA from Roscrea (2) winning the R Harkness Cup. Alan Darragh was OB Sect Fancier of the Year and Thompson Bros were YB Sect Fancier of the Year.
In the Antrim Area Thompson Bros from Crumlin & District had a season to remember winning Young Bird Fancier of the Year in the NIPA Section B and on top of that Champion Old Bird and Champion Young Bird of the Year in Section B, some performance. It’s the second year in succession that the Nutts Corner based loft has picked up the Champion Bird of the Year awards. In Randalstown the top racing loft of father, son and grandson team of F J & G Dickey won 1st Open NIPA in the Area (1) YB Liberation from Mullingar. Getting to be the loft to beat especially in the young birds they also took 1st in Mid Antrim Combine in this same race. The Glenavy loft of Ian Gibb & Sons won the Agar Cup 1st Yearling in the Sennen Cove OB Classic, Sect D Overall Fancier of the Year and the RPRA (Irish Region) Trophy for NIPA Champion Young Bird.
In the far north which includes lofts in Ballymoney and Coleraine they again featured in the presentation with the King of Bushmills Trevor McDonald winning 1st Open NIPA in the opening race of the old bird season from Mullingar. At Ladies Night the Coleraine Premier loft of T & J McDonald collected the Mulgrew Family Cup. Danny Dixon from Dunloy who races in both Ballymoney HPS and Rasharkin & District wins an NIPA Bronze Diploma. This is very special award for a very special pigeon, Joss Josson give Robert McManus, Sean Curran and Danny himself three eggs out of his best stock birds when they were going home from Belgium in 2013 the egg Danny got was the only one that hatched, and it has flown France two times now in the prizes.
