Re: Ballymena Area Show Season 2017 -

Post by willie reynolds »

For the second week the Ballymena & District HPS had 170 birds penned, this time it was the young birds judged through the wires. Judges travelled down from Muckamore and the winning birds were penned by W & N Gilbert winning BIS for the local club while visitor John Edgar had the Red Card in Young Hens. I have been told Mrs Parkhurst passed away in recent days, the wife of the late Ernie and what a team they were. Olive worked in the local Post Office and was a very efficient Club Secretary, and Ernie was an Ace Racer topping Sect B several times. He used to phone me up and give me the local update, funny how some things stick in your mind. In my early days in the sport we paid a late night visit to Ernie in Riverside, must have been after we judged a show in Muckamore, I was with brother Michael before he moved to USA, and the late Officer Gorman who was Chairman in Muckamore and the late Davy Campbell – it must have been Harryville judges. At the present time my Daughter Bronagh lives close to the Pankhurst address what a view they have at the back looking over the Six Mile river, Bobby Bethel lives at the top of the same street. Mrs Pankhurst had been in failing health and Ernie passed away several years ago, another bit of Antrim history gone. The raffle was won by Chrissie Donnelly. Young Cocks T/W (85 birds) – 1st & 4th W & N Gilbert, 2nd D Swann, 3rd C Moore, Reserve & VHC J Edgar, HC T McFall, Commended W & J Smyth. Young Hens T/W (84 birds) – 1st J Edgar, 2nd, HC & Commended W & N Gilbert, 3rd B Herbison, 4th C Moore, Reserve D Swann, VHC W & J Smyth. Thanks to everyone who supported us tonight and our judges.

The remaining Monday dates are – 13th November Yearling Cocks & Yearling Hens T/W, 20th November Old Pairs & Young Pieds T/W, 27th November Young Pairs & Old Pieds T/W, 4th December Red Mealy & Grizzle YB and Red Mealy & Grizzle OB Through Wires, 11th December YB Eye-sign and OB Eye-sign. To qualify for Show Specials a minimum of six birds must be penned. If you require more Show Info contact Willy Gilbert Tel: 07761 323459.

Obituary

We had the sad news last Monday evening at the weekly show that the former Chairman of the Ballymena & Dist HPS Robert Graham had passed away at his home in Greenmount Terrace surrounded by his loving family. Robert had been ill for a period of time and had not raced for several years. He was able to congratulate son Martin after his recent success from France with the only bird in the NIPA Sect B from St Malo with just 16 birds home. When we lived in Harryville at Brooke Park which in those days was a hot bed of the sport, enough lofts to have formed a club in their own right, R Graham & Son, that would be Robert’s late father, were founder members in Harryville. Martin Graham is a third generation racing loft, previously in Harryville he now has top success at his beloved distance and Irish National events through Ballymena & District HPS. I would think much more is still to come. What a fitting tribute on the day of Martins twin sisters anniversary (sadly passed away due to cancer) that he would win 1st Sect B & 7th Open NIPA St Malo Old Bird National and name his latest top performing, 2 year old Blue Cheq hen Champion "Brenda-Ann ", in memory of his dear sister. Burial for Robert was at Calvary Cemetery in Carnlough, donations in lieu of flowers if desired to either - Cancer Focus NI, Marie Curie or NI Hospice c/o Michael McSparron, Funeral Director, 40 Harbour Road, Carnlough BT44 0EU. Sincere sympathy to the entire Graham Family circle, at this very sad time.

I wrote this little report in 2008, the first year of the Mid Antrim Combine Champions League with a little bit of info supplied by Robert Graham who that season was Chairman in the Ballymena & District HPS.
Reynolds Bros (Homer) had been members of Harryville previous joining in 1971 for young birds getting prizes in both Haverford and Skibbereen YB Derbies racing just 12 birds and the year after that timing in the OB Derby Dinard and winning the OB Ave in our first full season. Around this time my brother Michael was Secretary, it was just for a short time before he decided to move to USA and make a life there with a new wife. I remained a member myself for around 30 years although for most of that time not flying the birds, 12 young birds would hardly be good enough now. I have seen the Minute Book before and have managed to get a copy of the minutes recorded for the first two meetings of the club. It did not say where they were held or the members attending. The first meeting according to this report was on Wednesday 15th February 1957 with the following members elected to office. Secretary Samuel McCartney, Treasurer David Campbell, Ass Treasurer R Lindsay, Chairman Ken Gillen, Vice-Chairman Samuel Mackrell.

It was proposed by Joe Spence and seconded by W McPeake that no duplication be accepted all birds competing must be race marked through Harryville. (Passed). It was proposed by David Campbell and seconded by Tom Eaton that invitations be sent to all Harryville fanciers to join the club. (Passed). At the second meeting of Harryville HPS held on Wednesday 1st March the minutes of the first meeting were read and passed. It was proposed by S Mackrell and seconded by Tom Eaton that the club purchase a master timer. (Passed). Proposed by J Lennox seconded by Ken Gillen that the club subscriptions be £2 and 10 shillings (Passed). Proposed by Ken Gillen and seconded by Matt McAdorey that that the club be kept exclusively for Harryville fanciers (Passed). Proposed by James Lennox seconded by Samuel Mackrell that birdage be 6d inland and one shilling across channel. This concluded the business for the evening and the minutes were signed by D Campbell and S McCartney.

A lot of water under the bridge from those days, Harryville was a hot-bed and I well remember Brooke Park full of lofts, at least one quarter of the 60 bungalows. One such loft was that of J Graham & Son and I asked Robert who is now the Chairman in Ballymena & Dist what he remembered about the early days in Harryville. His thought was the club was formed due to the formidable competition at that time in the Ballymena & Dist the big club at the top of the town. They had the likes of Tommy Harper, Billy Erwin, Smyth Bros, Bobby Law, Doey Bros, Bob Kielty, Alex O’Rourke, Jack Rodgers, George Barr to mention just a few of the all time greats.

Some of the names involved with Harryville in those early days not sure if they were all founder members included Sam McCartney, Davy Campbell, Tom Eaton, John Surgenor, J Graham & Son, Roy Millar & Son, B Swann & Son, J McFall, Letters & Son, Robert Lindsay, Harry Knox, John Collins & Son, Quinten McFall, McMaster Bros, McPeake Bros, T Picken & Son, and there may be others. The early meetings were held in rooms behind the Railway Tavern Bar, later moving to the Raglan Bar and then to the Goods Yard at Railway Street. Robert who was just 16 at the time said the meetings chaired by Chip Surgenor left a great impression from that time. There was a need for a club at the lower end of the town on the south side of Harryville Bridge which at that time was the main road through town. It was difficult to compete against some of the household names of the sport and Harryville itself had enough lofts on site to form a club.

Robert Graham was involved in the early days as Treasurer, chip Surgenor was President, Chairman Davy Campbell who dominated racing over the early years and Secretary Sammy McCartney who was involved with an Insurance Company. Today Jackie Millar and James Letters remain connected to the club, Brian Swann is in Kells & Dist and Robert Graham as I said earlier is involved at Ballymena & Dist, his son Martin is a third generation and has already enjoyed good success with 1st Open OB Inland Nat and 2nd Open OB Derby France. The club have become one of the best in its 50 years winning 1st Open at Derby & Nat level numerous times and over recent seasons J Eagleson & Sons, Colin McBride and Roy Clements have all been crowned NIPA Sect Fancier of the Year. I can remember in my time the club were open for duplication and had an application from the late Leslie Mairs of Kells a super loft. He flew short was brilliant and the current Sect Fancier of the Year. It made no difference to the Harryville membership, he joined and won numerous top prizes, the attitude of the club was that if you were to reach the top you had to beat them all, no matter who they were. That might have had something to do with the fantastic success the club has enjoyed in its history.

Obituary – We had the sad news at the weekend that Ballymena & Dist HPS life member George Barr had passed away at home after a period of illness. Barr was a famous name in the Ballymena Borough not only through the pigeons but in the butchery business and of course local football. In his younger days George turned out for Ballymena, Glentoran and Cliftonville. His uncle Albert one of the famous Barr Brothers played football as well winning an Irish Cup medal with Ballymena and later playing for Manchester City. I suppose it was only a matter of time till George got involved with the pigeons and he joined the big Ballymena & District in 1964, he had a race record as good as any winning from the shortest races through to France. He raced a famous bird named Wee Albert which would have won a Hall of Fame if racing now placed three times in the Blue Riband Kings Cup including 4th Open and £300 which was big money then. I always remember racing in the old Ballymena Championship Club doing ok till the George Barr card arrived from the District usually changing the result big time. In Ballymena & District the George Barr Cup is awarded for the OB Derby with the NIPA, a cup he was to win on numerous occasions himself. Through ill health George gave up racing a few short years ago, when at the club he was the best of craic recalling all the great stories of the past with both pigeons and football. The funeral service will be in Wellington Church on Tuesday at 2.00pm followed by burial at the Ballymena Cemetery on Cushendall Road. Donations in lieu of flowers if desired may be sent to James Henry Funeral Services, 100 Broughshane Street, Ballymena BT43 6EE for the Chest Heart and Stroke Association. We have lost another star, sincere condolences to wife Hazel and the entire family circle at this very sad time.

We had the sad news at the weekly show a couple of weeks back that the former Chairman of the Ballymena & Dist HPS Robert Graham had passed away at his home in Greenmount Terrace surrounded by his loving family. Sincere sympathy to the entire Graham Family circle, at this very sad time.

Charlie scored many top results over the years and especially enjoyed the long distance events, brother Albert passed away at the start of 2016 season he was club Secretary for many years and his other brother Tom continues in the club as Chairman. Only Club Delegates will be eligible to vote on the business of the meeting. Members will hear the latest update from the NIPA and any decisions made will go forward to the NIPA Committee for consideration re the NIPA Agenda for the AGM. Sect B will select 4 members for the Committee, an item listed already for the AGM is to reduce that to two members. A meeting is to take place to review the contents of the Rule Book, clubs should bring forward any rules that need adjusted or deleted, and any new ones for consideration. Congratulations to Sammy Thompson from the Coleraine & Co Derry being installed as Patron of the NIPA in the week of his 90th Birthday, many congratulations Sammy.

NIPA Committee Meeting 29/11/17

On a cold winter night with ice and frost forecast it was no surprise a few member’s, especially from the longer distance were missing, however all outstanding business was conducted and several decisions made. Remember this is not the minutes, just a report as I see it.

Chairman Ken Wilkinson opened the meeting and asked Fred to read the minutes of the previous meeting held in Dromore on Tuesday 17th October, he gave an extensive report on the Titanic appeal the club had both their Secretary Eddie Gilliland and Chairman Michael Atcheson present. The main dispute surrounded the spreading of birds in the Fermoy/5 Bird young bird event, NIPA said the rules were not observed while Titanic said they done their best to carry out the rule.

It was the unanimous decision of the NIPA Committee to disallow Titanic`s appeal , however the previous decision to suspend all members for the 1st 6 old bird races has been amended to Titanic club be Banned from racing / competing with the NIPA for the 1st 6 weeks of Old bird racing in 2018 as per NIPA rule 13 B.

All members who competed in the Fermoy and Fermoy 5 bird races are still disqualified, the Titanic club have the right of appeal to the Irish Region of the RPRA within 21 days of this meeting.

Titanic in turn appealed the NIPA decision and at the Irish Region RPRA meeting last Saturday the NIPA decision was upheld. To make the 5B Classic totally fair for the entire membership it is necessary to insist all members birds are spread over all the race crates, and not having all the five bird entry for individual members in one crate.

Member clubs will be asked to submit the Base Station numbers on the ETS equipment they intend to use for club racing in 2018, no club will be permitted to use more that, one each of the various ETS Units ie. Unikon, Bricon, Benzing, Tauris, Tipes etc. Looks like there will be more checks in place for racing in 2018, both at club marking and checking and then the paperwork that is returned to NIPA HQ for completing the result. Details on the Basket List and Arrival list will have to match up.

Fancier of the Year will be getting looked at for the number of races flown and maybe worked out over time and distance as the Average Cups etc. The next Committee Meeting for Tuesday 19th December will be looking at all the resolutions for the AGM Agenda, the Balance Sheet and Race Programmes. Pressure is still on to reduce the number of Centres, possibly one for each Section when that can be done. New club Abby Social have been accepted for the Belfast Area.

A big discussion was had regarding the Accounts and on what the money was spent on each season, some feedback from the membership was not a correct understanding of what exactly was going on and there has been some concern for the last number of months, on the views published on Social Media that were untrue. Some organizations have rules in the Rule Book to deal with these problems and it will be no surprise if the NIPA, also go this way in the future. Do remember this report is not the minutes of the meeting, just my reading of discussions at the meeting. Prior to the next Committee Meeting a select Committee will go through the Rule Book with a view to publish a list of changes and adjustments.Sammy Thompson was installed as Patron of the NIPA.

NIPA Sect B Meeting - A meeting of the Section B Clubs was called for Thursday 14th December at 8.00pm in the Ballymena & District Clubrooms. With a terrible week of weather conditions only a handful of local clubs were represented. Delegates attending were G McDowell and J Surgenor from Kells & District, A Darragh and S Steele from Cullybackey, I Stewart from Randalstown, R Service and G Price from Harryville and J Harris and W Reynolds for Ballymena & District.

Willie Reynolds had supplied a written report on the discussion at the most recent NIPA committee meeting held on 29th November. It was noted Sammy Thompson was nominated to take on the position as Patron, this would have to be confirmed at the AGM, meeting agreed that Sect B would nominate Sammy at the AGM. Proposed by G McDowell sec by A Darragh and passed unanimous.
It was agreed that Willie Reynolds would conduct the meeting, items raised included the following.
NIPA Committee positions for 2018 season, proposed by A Darragh Sec by R Service that G McDowell and K Kernohan be returned to run the Cullybackey Centre. The other two places members would have to be confirmed at a future meeting since members from Muckamore/Crumlin and Rasharkin/Ballymoney were absent on this occasion.

Two items were put forward by George McDowell from Kells & Dist and meeting agreed would be put forward to the NIPA Secretary Fred Russell for inclusion on the AGM Agenda, the secretary has the detailed text.

The first item was dealing with the 5 Bird Championship Classic for Young Birds usually flown in duplicate with the Fermoy race. Probably to be listed as Rule 39A – Birds in both events to be spread over all crates. Prop by G McDowell and Sec by A Darragh.
The second item was that each club using ETS Equipment only one system to be used on each version for basketing and race checking re Unikon, Bricon, Tipes etc, etc. Prop by G McDowell and Sec by J Surgenor.

Both carried unanimous and as I said NIPA Secretary has the detailed text.

Staying with the ETS it was agreed to put forward a Resolution that states Member Allocation Sheets OB & YB printed on the registered Club Equipment for the season, a copy to be sent and retained in the NIPA Hq for ring verification purposes. Proposed by J Harris and Sect by R Service and passed.
Finally it was proposed we discontinue with Area Liberations in the opening two weeks of the YB Season and have Mass Liberations instead. Proposed by I Stewart and Sec by G McDowell and passed.

The meeting closed at 8.45pm.
