Some organizations made an early start last weekend, this weekend the NIPA and East Down Combine join the fray. NIPA will have the arranged Area Liberations from Navan, Mullingar and Tullamore. East Down Combine will be in Navan and Ulster Fed return to Navan after a good first toss last weekend with winners exceeding 1800ypm. We will do our best to keep you up to date with all the news, there is not much time between liberation and birds home. In my diary ECF and ISRF started last week, results have been slow probably due to holidays etc, we will keep you up to date with what we have. It will be helpful to have those using the computer to have the result listed as early as possible, either Saturday or by early afternoon Sunday. This will give us enough time to lift all the news, results and photos that have been placed. Those without the computer should just continue to fax, phone or leave messages, we will do the rest. The NIPA are still not happy with the rate of delivery for the weekly result, I still think the fax and computer are best, this way you have immediate delivery. The post collects at lunchtime on Saturday, no collection on Sunday and no collection should Monday be a Bank Holiday and I think we have at least three of those during racing every year. I do appreciate not every club has access to modern technology, but like the ETS it will not be long till everyone is involved. The vast number who make contact with us do via the computer and I get less and less calls, but like I say we will do our best to collect all the results each weekend, in no time the season will be complete. Last Saturday the Ulster Fed released in Navan at 8.15am and East Down Combine in Navan at 8.45am, wind was North West. NIPA Liberations confirmed were:- Navan: Sect C at 9.00am. Mullingar: A West at 9.00am. Sect B & Top Sect A at 9.30am. Sect F at 9.45am. Tullamore: Sect D, G & Ligoniel at 9.30am. Sect E & Bottom Sect A at 9.45am.

BALLYMENA RING NOMINATION – The local club Ballymena & District this year are holding a special Ring Nom Race to be flown from Fermoy on Saturday 22nd August. Open only to lofts competing in the Mid Antrim Combine. Entry fee is £10 per ring with no limit, the prize list will be confirmed after the final deadline for entries. THE FANCIERS COMBINE – Having purchased a new trailer earlier in the season the Fanciers Combine Kick-Off their Young Bird programme on Wednesday 29th July with a race from Kildare. Ringing will be on Tuesday evening 7.30pm until 9.00pm open to all organisations. Racers 50p members only, Trainers £6 per crate (max 25 per crate). Each Race 1st - £50, 2nd - £30, 3rd - £20, One Cut of the £5 Nomination. The second race will be one week later on Wednesday 5th August, ringing on Tuesday evening 7.30pm until 9.00pm in the Edgarstown HPS Clubrooms in Portadown. SEASON CATCH-UP FROM LARNE & DISTRICT HPS

Readers last heard from us when Witherspoon & Rossborough took first position from the 1st Talbenny race, the opening cross channel event. The week previous Brian McCammon had taken the Red Card from the Rosscarbery National with a blue cock at a velocity of 1876 and W J Agnew also took first from Fermoy with a dark checker cock doing 2008.

At the 2nd Talbenny in late May, R Mills & son’s grizzle cock took first place with a velocity of 1232, 2nd Roy Fenton (1215) and 3rd Marshall & Wilson (1195). In that same weekends race programme Marshall & Wilson also took first position in the Fermoy race with their check cock in a velocity of 1052.

Next we had Bude where A S McNaghten clocked his third win for the season with a blue cock in a velocity of 1549, 2nd was Sammy Burns (1534) and 3rd Baxter & Holden (1521). We then see Baxter & Holden take the Red Card in the Penzance National with a blue cock (979), 2nd A S McNaghten (963) and 3rd J McAuley (957).

St Malo on 25th June saw a third win for W J Agnew (1208), 2nd Baxter & Holden (1016) and 3rd Ferguson & Crawford (996). Jim Agnew is having a fabulous season having topped Section C from St Malo and showing he hasn’t lost his touch at 81 years young! The NIPA Yearling Nationals from Rosscarbery were won by A S McNaghten (Hens) and J & D McWhirter (Cocks). In early July Robert Mills had the best bird home in the Kings Cup flown from Plaudren recording velocity 1280 he was among the early birds in the Muckamore Centre.

Young Bird Season 2009, 36 Larne & District members sent a good entry of 871 birds to the first young bird race in the 2009 season. The partnership of Steele & McLaughlin take the Red Card from Navan with a Busschaert hen bred from the loft of Steve Sutton (England) in a velocity of 1424-935. R Mills & son were a very close 2nd and 3rd at 1424-743 & 1424-300. The Larne 2 Bird Club sees J & D McWhirter take first position with Witherspoon & Rossborough runner-up. In the Weekly Sale Bird 1st R Anderson & Son, 2nd D Donnelly & Partners.

NIPA Section C in East Antrim released in Navan for the opening young bird race, top velocity appears to be with Carrick & Dist with T Creighton & Sons doing 1462 and 1461. Steele & McLaughlin were best in Larne doing 1424, the winners in Eastway and Glengormley M & T Griffith and Bingham & Seaton were both doing velocity 1457.

The first young bird race was I suppose reasonable, some lofts done very well and probably the majority, had birds missing, over the country some areas were better than others and the Co Down especially was very erratic. The start of young birds had already been delayed for one week and we must make a start regardless, the weather is what it is. Locally the big news is a fantastic 1st, 2nd and 3rd for Jeff Surgenor in Kells & Dist plus the top three places in Mid Antrim Combine. He had other early arrivals that were not timed. Same for Martin Graham who timed eight birds in as many seconds to fill the top of the Ballymena & Dist result and next best in Mid Antrim Combine, he had as many birds again around the same time. Both lofts are using ETS, Martin for the first time and that was an experience.
