Alex Crawford 1st Open from 1st Bude

Saturday June 9th and the East Down Combine were in Bude ( Cornwall) for the 2nd Cross channel Old Bird race of 2018. This proved to be the most challenging event of the season so far and a look at the Combine website will show the variation in the velocities from around the various clubs . The convoy of just over 1400 were liberated at 8.30am into a light Easterly wind with the leading top ten in the open recording velocities in the 1100’s .Winning the Combine this week is Ballylesson fancier Alex Crawford on 1146 ypm who tops both the Open and the West Section. Alex has been racing very consistently this year and was 3rd open 3rd West section a few weeks ago from the 1st Fermoy race .From Bude he is followed in both the open and the section by 3 Dundonald birds the first of these to Jim Young & ptnrs and then two together to the partnership of Stephen Brown and Tom McConnell . The first East section bird was to Annsborough’s Mickey Croskery at 5th open then it was back to Dundonald and the West section for 6th open for Mark Foulis .2nd in the East Section was Bangor’s David Shaw and he was very closely followed at 8th open 3rd East section by Bangor’s Reggie & David Moore and it is then back to Annsborough with another one for Mickey Croskery with Ballylesson completing the top ten through S Casement & son . This week the Combine are scheduled to have their 2nd race from Bude but the weather has been such that race marking has been postponed from Thursday with a final decision being made on Friday morning with a view to a possible liberation on Sunday .
