20th July 2018

Dear Colleague

I am writing to inform you of the detection of Newcastle Disease in two commercial poultry premises in the East Flanders region of Belgium. This is a new strain of the virus to NW Europe.

In addition to this, since June, the Belgian Authorities have reported outbreaks of Newcastle Disease (ND) in backyard poultry premises in several areas. Further information on this outbreak can be found here: Disease Outbreak Assessment: Newcastle Disease Belgium

This is Belgium’s first case of Newcastle Disease since 2010. It last occurred in Northern Ireland in 1997 when 1.4 million poultry were slaughtered. The last suspect case was in 2017 when several thousand poultry were slaughtered as a precautionary measure. The last outbreak in Great Britain was in July 2006.

Newcastle Disease is a highly contagious disease of birds caused by a paramyxovirus. It is a Notifiable Epizootic Avian Disease subject to similar control measures as avian influenza. Further advice and information about the clinical signs of the disease can be found at:

DAERA: Newcastle Disease

This is a timely reminder for all bird keepers, even if they only keep one bird, to maintain high biosecurity standards and to remain vigilant for any signs of disease in their flock.

Birdkeepers can help prevent the disease by:-

· Practising strict biosecurity measures on their premises Biosecurity and preventing welfare impacts in poultry and captive birds

· Talking to their vet about vaccinating their birds against the disease. If they are vaccinating their birds all protocols for vaccination must be strictly followed

· Following the guidance at http://www.daera-ni.gov.uk/articles/avian-influenza-ai . While AI and ND are separate diseases both are Notifiable Epizootic Avian Diseases and similar control/preventative measures apply

Anyone who suspects an animal may be affected by a notifiable disease must report it to their local Divisional Veterinary Office. Contact details can be found at https://www.daera-ni.gov.uk/publication ... al-offices or the DAERA helpline on 0300 200 7840 (Mon-Fri 9 am to 5 pm)

Anyone concerned about their birds should contact their PVP or their local Divisional Veterinary Office.

The Public Health Agency has confirmed that Newcastle Disease does not have any significant public health implications.

You may wish to pass this information on to your members as appropriate.
Regards
