COASTAL CLUBS AGAIN LEAD FROM NAVAN -

The glorious Summer weather of the early part of July ended literally with a bang on the weekend of July 28th /29th . The East Down Combine were scheduled to fly the 2nd race of the Young bird season on Saturday 28th again this was to be from Navan but anyone following the weather on the day in the news both local and National would have seen that here in Northern Ireland some places were subjected to a months rainfall in a matter of a few hours and given that this had been well forecasted the EDC Weather Committee wisely postponed race making on the Friday and looked to the Sunday for the race although the early part of that day was not to be favourable a clearance was expected in the afternoon so race marking took place on the Saturday evening but the entry overall was down as many fanciers decided to give this one a miss .

The 2,500 birds were released on the Sunday afternoon at 3 pm into a light Westerly wind which saw leading velocities up on the previous week but again this week it was the clubs of Cloughey and Portavogie out on the East Coast which got the first birds along with Annalong and three to the Downpatrick lofts of Bob Connolly making up all the positions in the open and all these were in the East Section .
Heading the Combine this week was the Portavogie lofts of Robt. & Glenn Thompson who had been 13th open the previous week from the 1st Navan but were just ahead of the Cloughey lofts of Harper & Young who had 6 birds in quick succession with club mates Cully & Monan coming in at 6th open to split up the Harper & Young six .

Crossgar had the top four places in the West section with Alex and Anne Cheevers having the top spot followed by three to McCartan & Woodsides and then up to the Newtownbreda club to complete the top six with two birds to B Hogg & Sons . The full Open and Section results were :

6th &7th Open St.Malo ---Joe McGreevy -Crossgar

The recent Old Bird Derby from St.Malo was a very testing race with only 8 birds recorded in race time so when Joe McGreevy of the Crossgar club recorded two of these it was an outstanding performance .Joe entered 4 birds in this race and to date as well as the two in the result he has had a third bird return since and it is worth mentioning this when talking about birds home in race time as others do return after the races have closed .

From St. Malo Joe timed two blue chequers both racing on Roundabout .At 6th open it was a 2 year old cock bred by Sean McLoughlin off John O’Hare’s of Crossgar bloodlines and prior to St.Malo this cock had been 7th club from Bude.

At 7th open Joe timed a 3yo hen again on Roundabout and also a prize winner from Bude but in this case it was in 2017 when she was 5th open 2nd West section and the breeding here on the sire’s side is John O’Hare x A Cheevers whilst the dam is down off Sam Duke’s triple crown winner .

This week the Combine is scheduled to move on to Tullamore and again the weather will be a key factor with many lofts having yet to give their young birds their first race. It is also the weekend for submitting the 2 bird Gold ring nominations .
