Fermoy Open Dominated by Cloughey

For the 6th Young Bird race the East Down Combine were in Fermoy a flying distance to Bangor ,one of the longest flying clubs , of around 200miles and the birds were released at 9am and with a West North west wind for the birds the West took the leaders out to Cloughey and Portavogie on the East Coast with the lofts of Harper and Young and Gordon Bros & sons taking the Lions share of the Open places with only some 11ypm separating the top 40 birds in the Combine with 1st and 2nd Open being won on the same yard by the Harper & Young lofts on a velocity of 1503 . The lofts which featured in the Open result were all in the East Section with Harper & Young (Cloughey ) having 15 birds in the top 40 ,Gordon bros & Sons (Cloughey ) 19 birds ,J & R Young (Portavogie) 5 birds and Clougheys John Hall & son 1 bird .
The West section was won by Colin & Dorothy Smyth & sons ,followed by S Casement & son (Both lofts Ballylesson) with W & L Robinson (Comber ) 3rd

John Patterson still a top fancier at 90

Whilst the birds in the various clubs were being raced marked for Fermoy a very special event was taking place in the Ballylesson club which is the Club to which John Patterson belongs , for the members in conjunction with John’s Family had organised a surprise 90th Birthday party for John and asked along some of John’s closest friends from the pigeon world to mark this landmark occasion . John has been racing pigeons since he was 16 and is still at the top of his game ,being the current East Down Fancier of the Year an honour which he has now won 13 times .Already this year he has to his credit 1st Open EDC Mallow. Supper and a very informal evening was the programme for the evening which gave John a chance to spend time with his many friends and reminisce with them which was helped by some anecdotes from Ronnie Johnston all of which were very humorous ,it was a very pleasant evening and I will have more shortly on the long pigeon career of a truly remarkable man in the meantime John, Happy Birthday from all your friends in the Pigeon world near and far .

This week the Combine returns to Thurles followed by the Derby and Nationals in the coming weeks , a sure sign that the 2018 season is drawing to a close . Clifford Browne .
