The EDC was in Thurles on Saturday and the open winner is my good friend and club mate John Patterson Ballylesson HPS (JP) is probably the best fancier in NI John has just celebrated his 90 Birthday he does not race a big team that is why he’s the best John 1st Open 1st West Sect R Moore & Son Bangor RPC 1st East Sect a big congratulations John. John Patterson is tops from 2nd Thurles
The East Down Combine were back to Thurles on Saturday September 1st with a convoy of 2,205 birds and with a light Southerly wind the leading velocities were in the 1500’ s . Liberation was at 11.15am and the result saw a close finish with less than 10ypm separating the top ten in the Open . Once again Ballylesson’s John Patterson proved what an exceptional fancier he is having the Open and West section winner giving him another 1st Open Combine(and a nice Birthday Present ) to add to the 1st Open from Mallow earlier in the year and as I have mentioned a number of times he is the current Fancier of the Year in the Combine for 2017 and is presently in 3rd place in this year’s competition .
The next three birds in the Open were to Dundonald members with Mark Foulis with two together for 2nd and 3rd Open followed very closely by the Brown & McConnell partnership with these first four being West section birds .
Leading the East Section it was Bangor’s Reggie & David Moore and they were 5th open with this one with their 2nd bird at 3rd East Section 7th open .Completing the top ten in the open were the ever present Cloughey team of Harper & Young at 6th ,8th ,9th and 10th open .

10 BIRD NOMINATION CREATES AN INCENTIVE FOR ALL
This Young Bird season saw the Combine introduce a 10bird nomination ,open to all at no cost to the fancier with members nominating 10 young birds before the commencement of racing . The idea behind this was to give everyone an opportunity to compete on an equal playing field with a separate Open and section ,and a points results would be run each week with Championships Open and Section , with Diplomas for both Open and Section .Now all this took time to get up and running but this week I have the Nominated ring result for the 2nd Thurles and members can check the website for their championship position but I can tell you that at present the Open &East Section no1 loft is that of Harper & Young with Sam Rea (Dundonald) leading in the West section .
Now that this is up and running it is hoped that for the 2019 season everyone will enter their 10 birds so that every loft will be able to compete in this competition on an equal footing .

* Harper & Young took 1st and 2nd in the two bird club getting both their entries together and were 4th and 5th Open with them ,excellent selecting .
This weekend is Derby week with scheduled races from Talbenny ( Wales) and Skibbereen (Ireland) ,in addition the INFC are scheduled to hold the Young Bird Penzance National so can I wish Good Flying to all Competing .
