City of Derry Combine Results for the previous 2 Fermoys

As the NIPA youngbird racing season passed the mid way point, the previous 2 races were held in Fermoy, Co Cork. With previous big losses felt in lofts across the town, it was no surprise to learn that numbers where dwindling week on week. With a large majority of fanciers now closing lofts, who can blame a man for stopping their birds and thinking on the next year? Others have the unfortunate task of preparing for 2 years as they will be left with no yearlings on the team next year. The question still remains, what went wrong and how did we lose over 1000 pigeons in only a few short races? Mystic meg couldn't even answer that! But the show must go on as they say, and fanciers continue to send their birds which is no easy feat for them flying into the northwest at the best of times.

In the first Fermoy, conditions on the day where at best ok with a light NW wind. The birds reportedly cleared well and they should have endured a steady enough race. The total convoy of 16 693 birds were liberated at 08:30, amongst those where 571 birds from Section H with a disappointing 240 of those sent by 26 fanciers in the town. Usually my phone is steady on race day giving times of birds in mid ulster and on the north and east coasts. It was to my surprise I woke up to find only 4 messages to say that very little birds where spotted coming into the town and that they where sparse! Nevertheless, the brave birds broke from the 16 thousand and an out and out winner was clocked. The bird that came well out in front of the rest of the town belonged to the master himself, Anthony McCrudden of the Derry & District to take 1st club, 1st fed and 24th section.

The 2nd Fermoy the numbers nearly halved in terms of birdage as 21 members sent 134 pigeons from the 5 clubs. A good perfect racing day was at hand with the winds variable and predominantly SW, yet again a good enough race was predicted and I dare say, expected. The total convoy of 13 390 birds were released mid morning which contained the 446 birds away from Section H. How fair could racing be when 3.3% of the convoy had to break and head west whilst majority of that convoy headed north and east, the birds at this stage certainly had to know what was expected of them and had every odd stacked against them. Charles Lindburgh once said "Success is not measured by what a man accomplishes, but by the opposition he has encountered and the courage with which he has maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds". This paragraph strikes home with the pigeons also, against the opposition, with courage they broke at the race-point against overwhelming odds and powered through the obstacles and birds of prey to make their way home. The effect of the drag was noticeable however as most fanciers where in for a long stand before the birds made it home and it was another one of those days most fanciers were left scratching their heads. The fed honours went to the Concannon Brothers partnership of the Maiden City who pipped the partnership of Jimmy Quigley and his son of Amelia Earhart in what you could interpret as a photo finish! A gallant effort of Robert and Nicka Concannon which resulted in 1st club, 1st fed and 7th section - well done.
