Mackey & Lockhart win 2nd Skibbereen
29th September 2018
The East Down Combine’s final race of the season was the Ken McConaghie Skibbereen Derby flown on Saturday the 15th of September .This race was named in honour of the late Ken McConaghie who had raced with the Ballylesson Club so it was a fitting tribute that this year the top 5 birds in the result were to members of the Ballylesson club with only some 3 ypm separating these birds the winner on 1742 being to the Partnership of Mackay & Lockhart . Albert Lockhart and his late partner Bill Mackey only race a small team of birds but Albert is very competitive and gets his share of success. A very close second was the partnership of Stephen Casement and son who have 3 good ones at 2nd ,4th and 5th Open with Ken McConaghie’s son in at 3rd with the top 6 in the open being completed by Dundonald’s Mark Foulis with all these being in the West section . Topping the East section at 9th open was D Croskery and son (Annsborough ) followed by R &G Thompson of Portavogie at 12th Open .
Liberated in a SW wind at 9.15am the leaders recorded a velocity of just under a mile a minute . The full open and section result was ;

From the first Skibbereen Derby Downpatrick Premier members Bob Connolly had an excellent result winning 2nd ,5th & 6th open and East Section with the first bird being a Vandenabeele which was bred down from birds from Paul Kenney, who flies in the Midlands and the other two were bred down from Bob Fenech stock.

David Chew - It is with great sadness that I report the death of another Combine member David Chew .David racing as D & D Chew won many honours in a long racing career the highlight of which was winning the Millar Gold Cup when winning the EDC Old Bird Derby . Always ready to help fellow fanciers it was many years ago that along with Joe Dunn , David helped us plan the construction of a training trailer for our club . I extend sincere Condolences to his wife Doreen sons David & Brian and the wider family circle .
