Mid Antrim Show Scene -

Cullybackey HPS – The local club dinner and prize presentation for the season will be held this Friday 26th October in Toast Cullybackey, full report will follow. The show season will start on Saturday 27th October with young cocks and hens through wires.

Ballymena & District HPS – Monday as usual will be the show night in Ballymena, starting this year on 29th October and finishing close to Christmas, and remember the Annual Open Show on New Year’s Day, Tuesday 1st January in Ballymena & Dist Clubrooms, penning 11.00am until 1.00pm. Usual 3 in One. The annual dinner and presentation of prizes will be the week prior to Blackpool Show, on Saturday 12th January 2019. Ahoghill Flying Club – As usual Ahoghill will fill the Friday slot for their show series, the following show schedule to apply. Mid Antrim Show Scene

Cullybackey HPS – Were as usual first away last Saturday evening, judges travelled in from Kells & District both top winners in the young bird season with Geoff Surgenor winning the NIPA Talbenny National and in the second Area Liberation from Mullingar at the start of the year Davy Jackson had the best bird in Sect B & Part Sect A. Young Cocks – 1st & 3rd J McNaghten & Son, 2nd & HC W & N Gilbert, 4th N Anderson, Reserve & VHC C & R McIntyre, Commended R S Swann. Young Hens – 1st & 4th C Donnelly, 2nd & HC J & J Greer, 3rd W & N Gilbert, Reserve, VHC & Commended McAlonan Bros. Local members won both classes Ian McNaghten had Red Card in Young Cocks and Chris Donnelly Best in Show with winner in Young Hens. Next week 3rd November Old Cock & Old Hen T/W, 10th November Young Pairs T/W, 17th November Young Cocks & Young Hens Handled, 24th November Old Cocks & Late Breds Handled, 1st December Old Hens Handled & Fancy T/W, 8th December OB & YB Eye-sign. Ballymena & District HPS – Show season started on Monday 29th October with classes for Old Cocks and Old Hens T/W, good turn-out of members and friends and a total of 135 birds penned for the judges from Harryville HPS George Price and Roy Balmer. Robert Service & Son had two cards in Old Cocks including 1st & Best in Show. In the Old Hens the Red Card winner was George & Ann Eagleson. Nicola Gilbert won the raffle. Old Cocks (74 birds) – 1st & 4th R Service & Son, 2nd Reynolds & McCormick, 3rd W & N Gilbert, Reserve T McFall, VHC B Herbison, HC Blair & Rankin, Commended W & J Smyth. Old Hens (61 Birds) – 1st G & A Eagleson, 2nd B Herbison, 3rd, 4th & Reserve Reynolds & McCormick, VHC & HC R Service & Son, Commended McFall & McManus. Good to see Billy Smyth back recovering well after a short stay in hospital. Ballymena & District HPS – Show season continued on Monday evening, classes T/W for the Young Birds with a total entry of 167 birds. Judges travelled down from Muckamore Bobby Bethel INFC Centre Manager and Alan Steele who has the local feed store. W & N Gilbert had seven cards including 1st in the Young Cocks with a lovely Chequer full brother to their Champion Prince winner of numerous 1sts. Best in Show was penned by visitor from Ballymoney, Derek McMullan a lovely Blue hen. Young Cocks (85 Birds) – 1st, 2nd, 3rd & HC W & N Gilbert, 4th & VHC N & S Anderson, Reserve D Swann, Commended D & G McMullan. Young Hens (82 birds) – 1st D & G McMullan, 2nd, Reserve & HC W & N Gilbert, 3rd J Edgar, 4th B Herbison, VHC T McFall, Commended R & S Swann. We extend our sincere sympathy and that of the local fancy to our show friend Brian Herbison of Cullybackey on the sad passing of his wife Dianne who has had ill health over the last few years. The family were big supporters of the local charity Radio Cracker, many people attended the home every year to observe the Christmas Lights and raise fantastic funds.

Muckamore HPS – Good to see the local club going back to the traditional show series in the winter months, hope it gets plenty of support. It will be the first series held in over 30 years and penning in the local clubrooms will be Thursday evening. This will include 5 weekly shows and finish with a 3 in 1 Open Show at a date yet to be decided. Diary Dates: 15th November - Young hens, 22nd November - Young Cocks, 29th November - Old hens, 06th December - Old cocks, 13th December Pairs and fancy.

Cullybackey HPS – Continued last Saturday evening, judges travelled in from Ballymena & District, ace flyers George Connolly and George Eagleson. Red Card winner in Old Hens was N & S Anderson for the local club winning BIS while visitor Thomas McFall from Ballymena won the Old Cocks giving him his first Red Card of the Year. Old Hens T/W - 1st N & S Anderson, 2nd McAlonan Bros, 3rd & VHC J & J Greer, 4th, Reserve & Commended T Whyte, HC T McFall. Old Cocks T/W – 1st & HC T McFall, 2nd J & J Greer, 3rd & HC N & S Anderson, 4th, Reserve and Commended W & N Gilbert. Best YB Kevin Henderson. Our first show was judged by this year's Kings Cup winner Michael Fitzpatrick from Gilford, ably assisted by Alan Feeney also from Gilford and the club thank them sincerely. Show 05/11/18 - 1st Keelie Wright, 2nd Keelie Wright, 3rd Keelie Wright, 4th Keelie Wright, Reserve K Henderson, Vhc J P Nelson, HC Keelie Wright, C Kevin Douglas. Best YB Keelie Wright. Entire Clearance Sale re Alan Hall – Ronnie Johnston has been instructed to sell the stock of the late Alan Hall of Omagh, a record breaker in the North West of Ireland exceeding 100 x 1st Sect in the NIPA and at least 5 x 1st Open NIPA. 2018 INFC Charity Show – The 41st Annual Charity Show will be held in the Lisburn Leisure Complex on Saturday 1st December 2018 opening at 9.00am. Once again there will be classes for Racing Pigeons along with the Variety Pigeons and Show Racers. Classes are 3 in 1 Old Birds and 3 in 1 Young Birds. Penning of the birds is from 9.00am until 11.30am, please note the show is open to all lofts. Anyone entering Show Racers at the INFC show in Lagan Valley Leisure Complex Lisburn on Saturday please get your entries to John Edgar by Wednesday prior. The Sale of Birds will start at 4.00pm in Studio 1 & 2, next to the main trade stand hall. As usual there will be many outstanding birds from the elite of lofts in Ireland. Helen Marshall will be looking after the raffle as usual, books have been sent to most clubs. Top prize will be a Kit of 2018 youngsters from the Ace loft of Gordon Bros & Sons, Portaferry in County Down. The Centre has a top class restaurant with good menu and keen prices to suit everyone, car parking at the Leisure Centre is free. Dublin Charity Show – The annual one day Charity Show will take place on Saturday 17th November, doors open at 9.00am. Venue as usual the Irish Kennel Club Exhibition Centre beside Dublin Airport off the Roundabout at Coachman’s Pub, plenty of good food there. No doubt another big attendance from Northern Ireland with Trade Stands and Show Birds as well. Results will follow.

Section H meeting was arranged for Sunday 4th November at 3.30pm in the Old Railway Museum. Two delegates from each club were invited to attend. Please note that as Derek Simpson, Londonderry RPS is standing down as Section H Committee man, clubs were asked to nominate a replacement. I would take this opportunity to thank Derek for his work and assistance during his time as a Section H representative. Clubs in attendance - Amelia Earhart, Derry & Dist, Limavady HPS, Londonderry RPS, and Maiden City. Section H rep - vacancy still exists, clubs to submit nominations to J Ramsey or P Mc Laughlin. Proposals submitted by Strabane & District, discussed but most ruled out of order. New Section H club - noted that the application had been refused by the Irish Region RPRA. A.O.B Steve O’Dea has offered to act as PRO for local clubs including Strabane. He also offered to produce a "Foyle Valley" result after every race, each week of the racing season. Just a reminder that all Mckinstry Bros (Dromara) stock pigeons will be for Sale in the Legion in Banbridge on Thursday Nov 22nd. Bloodlines available are Soontjen, Herman Ceuster, Van den Bulck and Lambrects. Wouldn't be for Sale only they are quitting after the old bird programme.

It was a long time coming and I can hardly remember the last time the Muckamore HPS conducted a show season, in those days Muckamore was the big centre of activity for Derby & National events and all the big sales were held there as well. At that time Muckamore was a big club and won numerous big events including the Kings Cup for Goudy Bros, the late Chairman of the club Officer Gorman a top racer himself, was a former President of the NIPA.

Muckamore HPS – Good to see the local club going back to the traditional show series in the winter months, hope it gets plenty of support. It will be the first series held in over 30 years and penning in the local clubrooms will be Thursday evening. This will include 5 weekly shows and finish with a 3 in 1 Open Show at a date yet to be decided. Diary Dates: 15th November - Young hens, 22nd November - Young Cocks, 29th November - Old hens, 06th December - Old cocks, 13th December Pairs and fancy.

Ahoghill Flying Club – The 2nd show for Ahoghill was old cocks and hens through wires, W Gilbert won old cocks, Victor Montgomery won the hens, judges were Harry Boyd and Brian Swann from Kells. The Prince has now won 14 x 1sts, needs entered at Dublin and Blackpool. Raffle won by Rebecca. Cullybackey HPS – Latest classes on Saturday evening were pairs judged Through Wires by Robert McCartney of Harryville, Old Pairs T/W – 1st & Reserve, 2nd & Commended D Swann, 3rd, 4th & HC W & N Gilbert, Reserve B Herbison, VHC J & J Greer. Young Pairs T/W – 1st, 4th & Reserve McAlonan Bros, 2nd, 3rd & VHC W & N Gilbert, HC J & J Greer, Commended D Swann. Best in Show was won by Brian Herbison while McAlonan Bros made it a Red Card double for the local club in Young Pairs. 2018 INFC Charity Show – The 41st Annual Charity Show will be held in the Lisburn Leisure Complex on Saturday 1st December 2018 opening at 9.00am. Penning of the birds is from 9.00am until 11.30am, please note the show is open to all lofts. Ballymena & District HPS – Campbell Shaw travelled over from Randalstown to judge the most recent classes in Ballymena, for the 4th show we had classes for Old Pairs and Young Pieds through wires. Old Pairs T/W (108 Birds) – 1st, 3rd & VHC W & N Gilbert, 2nd B Herbison, 4th N & S Anderson, Reserve & Commended D Swann, HC Blair & Rankin. Young Pieds T/W (46 Birds) – 1st & VHC Darren Swann, 2nd, Reserve & VHC D & G McMullan, 3rd T McFall, Commended G & A Eagleson. Raffle was won by Thomas McFall and Best in Show was Darren Swann who has won 8 x 1sts in the last 3 weeks, both winning lofts had also won classes at Dublin. Broughshane & District HPS – Judges travelled from East Antrim to place the cards at the most recent show classes for the hens through wires in Broughshane last Tuesday. Ace racers from Doagh & District Fred Simpson and Sammy Leitch were well pleased with the condition of Darren Swann’s birds, the Ballymena & Dist member collected 10 cards in total and had the Red Card in both Old Hens & Young Hens. Old Hens T/W – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Reserve & HC D Swann, VHC & Commended N & S Anderson. Young Hens T/W – 1st, 2nd, Reserve & VHC D Swann, 3rd J Getty, 4th R & S Swann, HC D Houston, Commended J & J Greer. Raffle winner Tom Cole. Thanks to Jamie Lee Christie for supplying the competitors with her home-made buns, delicious. Remaining show series dates are as follows, 20th November - Old Bird eye sign / young bird mated pairs. 27th November - Old bird mated pairs and fancy class. 4th December - O/C & Y/C Handled. 11th December - O/H & Y/H Handled. 18th December - Card Winners. Kells & District – Last Wednesday evening the club penned 98 birds in the Old Hens judged Through Wires by Jackie & Sammy Graham from Kingsmoss. Victor Montgomery had two cards including 1st. Old Hens T/W (98 Birds) – 1st & Reserve V Montgomery, 2nd, 4th & Commended A Barkley & Son, 3rd Surgenor Bros, VHC & HC B Swann & Son. Rasharkin & District HPS had their first show of the season Old Birds 3 in 1 with 119 birds being penned for the judges who travelled down from Coleraine. Sean Diamond, Paul O’Connor and Terence McCrudden done another fantastic job, and a big thank you to the club members and visitors who supported the event. From the Ballymena & District W & N Gilbert won the Handled class plus Best in Show, they also took 5 cards in the Eyesign plus the Red Card. 2018 INFC Charity Show – The 41st Annual Charity Show will be held in the Lisburn Leisure Complex on Saturday 1st December 2018 opening at 9.00am. Once again there will be classes for Racing Pigeons along with the Variety Pigeons and Show Racers. Classes are 3 in 1 Old Birds and 3 in 1 Young Birds. Penning of the birds is from 9.00am until 11.30am, please note the show is open to all lofts. Anyone entering Show Racers at the INFC show in Lagan Valley Leisure Complex Lisburn on Saturday please get your entries to John Edgar by Wednesday prior. The Sale of Birds will start at 4.00pm in Studio 1 & 2, next to the main trade stand hall. As usual there will be many outstanding birds from the elite of lofts in Ireland. Helen Marshall will be looking after the raffle as usual, books have been sent to most clubs. Top prize will be a Kit of 2018 youngsters from the Ace loft of Gordon Bros & Sons, Portaferry in County Down. The Centre has a top class restaurant with good menu and keen prices to suit everyone, car parking at the Leisure Centre is free. Kells & District HPS – The most recent class on Wednesday was for the Young Hens judged by former member of the club Derek Millar. He was impressed with the birds penned by Surgenor Bros, who collected the Red Card and also 2nd and 4th. Young Hens T/W (66 Birds) – 1st, 2nd & 4th Surgenor Bros, 3rd & Reserve A Barkley & Son, VHC, HC & Commended V Montgomery. Judge Derek Millar (Harryville). This week winner id a sister of the lofts 1st Open NIPA winner. Kells & District HPS shows will continue with - 5th December mated pairs, 12th December eye-sign and pieds. All classes are through wires. Boxing Day show will be usual 3 in 1, this year Wednesday 26th December. More details later.

Muckamore HPS – Thursday results for old hens through wires. Old Hen T/W (102 Birds) – 1st, 2nd, 4th, HC & Commended W & N Gilbert, 3rd R Bethel & Son, Reserve K Wilkinson & Son, VHC A Neill. Thanks to judges travelling over from Ahoghill T Young and L Robinson. This Thursday sees old cocks through wires penning from 7-8pm in local club rooms.

Ahoghill Flying Club – Classes last Friday were Young Pairs won by Mr & Mrs Robinson while the Fancy Class was won bt Ballymena & Dist visitor Thomas McFall, judges from Cullybackey were Steven & Neill Anderson. I had the sad news during the last week that Frankie Marks from Princess Street in the town had passed away, he had not raced for several years but had a good record when he did. In a racing club of many big stars he had a major result from France in 1978 and was a major winner that season in the NIPA winning five of the major Average Cups. A young Jackie Fullerton presented the awards at Ladies Night held in the Chimney Corner Hotel and a few weeks later at the joint dinner for Ballymena & Harryville Clubs in Tullymore Hotel in Broughshane special guests from the NIPA were Secretary Fred Russell and Transport Manager Joe Vage, with Ballymena Mayor Sandy Spence.

Broughshane & District HPS – Robert Alexander from Ballymena and John McConaghie from Ballymoney judged the most recent classes at Broughshane for Old Cocks and Young Cocks. Old Cocks Handled (72 Birds) – 1st & 4th J & J Greer, 2nd & 3rd J Getty, Reserve & Commended M Neilly, VHC & HC N & S Anderson. Young Cocks Handled (46 Birds) – 1st & Reserve J & J Greer, 2nd & HC C Kennedy, 3rd N & S Anderson, 4th M Neilly, VHC D Houston. Both classes were won by ace racers J & J Greer from Cullybackey, and Darren Swann from Ballymena won the raffle. Remaining show series dates are as follows, 11th December - O/H & Y/H Handled. 18th December - Card Winners. Everyone welcome to club show series. Muckamore HPS – Old cocks through wires were penned in Muckamore this past Thursday evening. Judges travelling from Ligoniel & District were Darren McMurray and Dessie McClurkin. Thanks for completing a fantastic job. The W and N Gilbert team continued on their recent great form by taking all 8 cards which is a first for the partnership. Congratulations Willie on your latest success from all the members of Muckamore. This Thursday sees the final show on the series, being Pairs (old or young) and Fancy class. Young Bird Eye-sign – 1st M/M Sempey, 2nd, Reserve & HC C Donnelly, 3rd N & S Anderson, 4th J & J Greer, VHC W & N Gilbert, Commended C & R McIntyre. Judges from Harryville were Daniel Magill and Phil Hanlon. Keep Saturday 15th December free for the Annual 3 in 1 Open Show, report to follow.

Rasharkin Open Show – W&N Gilbert partnership won Best in Show, Best Opposite Sex, Best Young bird and Most Points. Classes won Young Bird Through wire, Young Bird Handled and Young Bird Eye-sign plus many more cards. What a result for W & N Gilbert from Ballymena.

Kells & District HPS – John Edgar and Derek McMullan from Ballymoney travelled to Kells for the final night of the Show Series, Eye-sign and Fancy Through the Wires. Alan Barkley cleaned up in the Eye-sign and won the Show Cup, Victor Montgomery from Ballyclare had the Red Card in Fancy. Eye-sign – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Reserve, VHC & HC A Barkley & Son, Commended Surgenor Bros. Fancy T/W – 1st, 4th, Reserve & VHC V Montgomery, 2nd, 3rd & Commended A Barkley & Son, HC Surgenor Bros.

Ahoghill Flying Club – Judges at the final show of the year were Martin Graham the latest National winner from Ballymena and Cullybackey President Sammy Steele. A good entre were penned for the Eye-sign and visitor Brian Herbinson from Cullybackey won both OB and YB classes and Best in Show, and also won the raffle. Old Bird Eye-sign – 1st, 2nd, 3rd & VHC B Herbison, 4th & Commended W Livingstone, Reserve T McFall. Young Bird Eye-sign – 1st, 3rd, Reserve & VHC B Herbison, 2nd & HC W Livingstone, 4th & Commended T McFall.

Muckamore HPS - Many thanks to everyone who competed in the show series and to all who gave off their time judging each week. Congratulations to the winners. Lurgan Social Christmas Show - This show was kindly sponsored by Frazer Animal Feeds. Monday 17th December saw the final show in the series for Lurgan Social HPS. An excellent turnout of members and a fantastic show of birds were penned for the 2 classes. Results were as follows. Young Birds - 1st Keelie Wright, 2nd Ronnie Higginson, 3rd Paddy Toman, 4th Keelie Wright, Reserve D & B Lyness, VHC K Henderson and Son, HC Keelie Wright, Commended K Henderson and Son. Old Birds - 1st K Henderson and Son, 2nd K Henderson and Son, 3rd Keelie Wright, 4th Ronnie Higginson, Reserve Keelie Wright, VHC Ronnie Higginson, HC Rodney Adamson, Commended Keelie Wright. Judges specials were awarded to E Lynn, S Anderson, J Douglas and son (2), J Barr, J P Nelson. The club would like to thank Alan Houston from Lisburn for doing the judging and also to all the judges that travelled to our clubrooms the club would like to extend their thanks.

Coming up – Kells Open Show on Boxing Day Wednesday 26th December, penning 11.00am until 2.00pm at £1.00 per bird. Usual 3 in 1, for Old Bird and Young Bird, six classes in total, and prizes for all cards. All fanciers welcome.
