AGM Lisburn 02/03/19 -

It was in 1932 that His Majesty King George V presented a new cup to the Irish National Flying Club to be known as The King George V Challenge Cup and was to be awarded to the winner of the OB Grand National.

The 1932 Grand National race was flown from Les Sables at a distance of some 600 miles and the race was won by R Hawthorn from Ligoniel in North Belfast. This race was flown under IHU rules and it was not until 1948 that the Kings Cup was flown under IHU and RPRA rules. The race in 1948 was won by Sammy Robinson from Belfast.

Right Ladies and Gentlemen, many of you will be aware I’ve often campaigned for change to our national and longer domestic racepoints, I feel they are not suitable, be it geographical or due to raptors, there is no logical path to our flying. Mr Milne Mairs had put a potential race program for the INFC which was as well thought out and logically sound as I’ve seen before including my own. It has all potential channel national racepoints being in a communal line from Le Mans to Talbenny. The reasoning behind this is familiarity. There needs to be change, we can’t go on as we are with disastrous returns from National and Classic racepoints just because we’ve always done it like this doesn’t mean we have to continue. Whatever proposals you prefer, ideally the ones that I have put forward, I would like you to come along to the AGM on Saturday, it only takes about an hour and a half, you don’t have to take a job, it won’t cost you anything only your time!

How many hours have we wasted dissecting disasters on this forum and others, we have a chance to change, in my view for the better all it needs is for YOU to do something, take an interest.

It can’t be any worse than what we’ve got at the minute, and you never know the domestic organisations may follow suit.

Yours in sport, Alan Larkin.

INFC Annual General Meeting – Same Race Programme agreed

As was expected a large number of members attended the 69th AGM of the INFC held on Saturday 2nd March 2019 in the Lisburn Leisure Centre in County Antrim.

Chairman Len McCavery welcomed the members and firstly asked them to stand and observe a moments silence for the members and relatives who had passed away since the previous AGM, included were Past Chairman of the East Down Combine Bertie Morrow. Apologies were received from a few members including J Albert, R Reid, S Thompson, D Cassells, and L Wilson.

He then invited the secretary Trevor Topping to read the minutes of the previous AGM which were then approved. Next item was the Secretary Report of 2018.
Secretary’s Report for the 2018 season.

On behalf of the members I thank the following sponsors during the 2018 season, Bamford’s Top Flight, Frazers Animal Feeds, H. Beattie & Son and Sawyers & Co. Estate Agents also to the BHW for a discount on publishing rates for race results.
The sponsorship special prizes are greatly appreciated by all the club members.
The club had a difficult seasons racing with the weather playing a big part in all the races. I congratulate all national race winners and prize winners during the 2018 season. In the difficult King’s Cup race fifteen Merit Award’s, three Hall of Fame’s and one Gold Medal to A. McAteer & Sons were awarded which is hard to understand when the race was so difficult. Thanks to the race advisors David Black, Tom Marshall, Peter McKeown and to Noel Shiels for his assistance for all their efforts. The weather was poor and the race advisors had to make some very difficult decisions.
Ronnie Johnston arranged the annual prize distribution to a very high standard once again in November and there was a record attendance with many positive comments on the evening. The awards were presented by long serving committee member Phil Smith assisted by Mrs. Smith.
I wish to thank the committees of the East Down Combine and Ulster Federation for assistance with transport during the 2018 season. On behalf of the members I wish to thank all of those committee members and club members who helped at the race markings, clock settings and checking’s and race controllers. Also thanks to Jim McCrory convoyer, Vincent, Danny and Brian McCrory for their great work and assistance in transporting the pigeons along with Paddy Cullen.
I personally thank the officials, committee members, press officer and any members who helped me during the past season. Also I wish to thank the out-going President Mr David Black for all his help and advice during his term in office.
What will 2019 season bring with so much uncertainty over the so called Brexit and the proposals, if accepted to change the cross channel and French release sites to a more easterly direction. Who knows what will happen. But we can all call upon our experience to hopefully carry us through.
The 2019 season is fast approaching and I appeal for help at the marking centre if only for a few hours as those members of the committee who faithfully attend the race marking are struggling to cope. The single bird challenge entries have to be returned before 17th March.
I hope we all have a successful 2019 season.

The Convoyers race reports were on the table for inspection and next item was the passing of accounts. Annual Accounts: Auditor Ron McKelvey presented the Auditors report to the members.

Birdage and revenue has dropped in recent seasons, something that will have to be kept under review, despite hard times the membership has held up. The increase in the joining fees the first in a long time will help funding. Overall loss on the year was £13,046. Three written queries had been received from Henry Byrne, Dublin. (1) On each race there is a transfer from General a/c. Why are these transfers made and why are the amounts different each time. (2) I see that the total paid for Convoyers, Transport and Drivers is in excess of £37,000 for six races can you explain how so much is spent and why. (3) The INFC has lost over £13,000 in 2018, at this rate in three years the club will be bankrupt. What action is going to be taken these losses. Auditor Ron McKelvey gave a detailed answer to (1) and (3) while the Secretary on (2) disputed the overall total, he gave a detailed account of the expenditure. Henry accepted explanation of the points he had raised, Ron and Trevor were thanked for the extra work required to supply the details. Overall the Irish National Flying Clubs accounts were in a very healthy state and the Auditor thanked Trevor for his assistance in the preparation of the accounts. The Accounts were passed.

Election of Officers: All offices were declared vacant and Mr David Black conducted the election of new President Mr Clifford Browns. Clifford said he was a member over 50 years and thanked the members for his election, he then conducted the election of officials for 2019.

The Charity Show report was read out by Show Manager Sam Briggs, it was the best ever since moving the show from Belfast to Lisburn. Total entry of birds on show was 624 and with the top quality sale of birds some £14,000 will be presented to local Charities. Overall total since the start at the Kings Hall amounts to £310,000, fantastic effort. Sam thanked the Stall Holders and all who helped in making it so successful, great team effort. This year the Show Date is 8th December in Lisburn, put the date in your diary.

Before closing we had a couple of points raised from the floor, Ken Wilkinson was looking something done regards the Peregrine problems, which are many, and Wesley Sawyers asked why as had been the recent tradition over a number of years that he was not invited to take Chairman, as he felt strongly he was next in line and was being overlooked.
