National Success for Norman and Margaret Renton

Post by Administrator »

Scottish National Racing Pigeon Club

~~ Andrezel National ~~

The convoy of Scottish National Racing Pigeon Club pigeons were transported and liberated at 5.30am with the mighty Up North Combine on Saturday 4th July. Race point conditions were very good and the birds were released into a light South West wind, some mist was reported on the channel but conditions up through England were excellent though very warm.

Andrezel is the longest event on the official programme with many of our pigeons flying 580 miles or so into the heart of Scotland but given the conditions expectations were high that pigeons would make good times.

These expectations were justified when news filtered through that pigeons were being clocked into the Middlesbourgh and Sunderland areas at around 2.45 in the afternoon also pigeons were recorded in Amble at 3.50 and Alnwick at 4pm making the estimated arrival time into the Scottish Border area for our birds around 5pm.

1st Open 1st Section B Norman Renton Foulden

Being such a lovely night Norman and Margaret Renton of Foulden Berwickshire had scarcely settled in the sunshine of their garden to watch for birds when their five-year-old mealy cock “Nordik“ was spotted wings closed making a beeline for the loft from a southerly direction.

It doesn’t matter how many winners you have timed in your lifetime the elation of clocking one from the channel never leaves you and in this case although he didn’t know it at the time Nordik was to be another National winner for Norman.
This latest win was Normans 3rd National victory he has previously won Tours and the Young Bird National with the SNFC these along with many other classic performances namely 1st Open Usher Vaux Beauvais, 1st Open Scottish Mid Week Specialist Club Yearling Dorchester and with the same club 1st Open Young Bird Dorchester. In 2005 he was 2nd Open SNRPC Alencon. Norman has won a great many other top positions in his long and illustrious time in the sport, too many to attempt to mention in this report.

This latest winner Nordik was sent sitting on 14 day eggs and was on his third flight he had 5 races prior to Andrezel National up to Newbury 306miles where he won 10th region 106th open with the SNFC. As a 3 year old he won 26th Open 24th Section SNRPC Reims 522 miles. Since racing commenced in early April Norman’s pigeons have only been exercised around the loft 1 hour morning and 1 hour at night. Yet another top fancier who has adopted this method, this certainly eliminates the risk of loosing good pigeons to the Peregrine when road training.

The sire was a gift to Norman from his good friend Derek Norden and contains the blood of his great pigeon Danny Boy and 1330 another prominent pigeon in the Norden loft the bloodlines of Tommy Gilbertson Carlisle also feature in the pedigree of this Kirkpatrick/Vanhee based family. The Dam is from Normans loft and previously won 3rd Sect 31st Open Sartilly in 1999. The birds are fed a good all round mix supplemented with farm beans and peanuts. Norman clocked the second of his five entries at 12.18 pm the following day to take 37th Open.

2nd Open 2nd Section B John Bell Tranent

John is having another great season this latest winner for him was a 6-year-old Chec hen timed at 18.00 another bred from his Rod Adams based family. She is no stranger to the winners enclosure having previously won 45th Open SNRPC Reims in 2008 she also has a 2nd open and two 3rd open Fed positions from Maidstone plus other good fed and club positions. Her full sister was clocked at 12.32 pm next day to win 9th Sect 32nd Open and is the Dam of his 2008 2nd Open and Yearling National winner from Arras Annfield Quicksilver. John races roundabout very successfully and is one of the East of Scotland’s top fanciers at all distances.

Also in 2008 she was 48th Open SNRPC Wanstead Flats Inland National. Earlier this season she recorded 1st club 4th fed Wanstead Flats and 2nd club 3rd fed Leicester. What a great hen this is, bred in 2007 by Ken Buchanan of Hamilton and bought by Peter at our young bird sale. Her Sire is a stock pigeon of Ken’s full brother to his 27th & 40th Open Reims, 8th Open SNRPC Lessay pigeon while the Dam herself is a winner of 32nd Open SNRPC Lessay 2006 for Ken. Peter’s second timer at 9.36 am second morning wins 6th Section 23rd Open.

This has to go down as one of the best performances of the race not only is he the longest flying loft on the result but George takes another three excellent positions 8th Sect 13th Open, 11th Sect 16th Open and 14th Sect 21st Open, absolute top flying. George’s section winner is a 2-year-old hen bred from a pigeon hatched from an egg gifted to him by John Proctor Kirkcaldy off his 7th Open Tours pigeon. The dam is a mealy hen whose bloodlines are from the loft of Pat Lue of Down Patrick in Ireland. The winner was raced celibate all season and paired for the National.

John’s 2-year-old grizzel hen was bred by Andy Thomson Duntrune Dundee as a yearling she flew Wanstead Flats, Ypres (in result) and SNRPC Arras where she was home in race time. This season she has had four races as far as Wanstead Flats with the Kingdom, she was sent to the National with her eggs due to hatch on the race day. The sire of this hen was Andy’s prizewinner from La Ferte Bernard and the dam is Jim Cullen X Bob Hughes Dundee.

One of the on form Kingdom lofts last season and continuing this season is that of Stuart Bowman this was his only entry and was clocked at 19.58 this hen was very badly hawked as a youngster so bad that Stuart was amazed that she pulled through. As a yearling she had 4 races to Wanstead Flats where she was 4th club. The following season she had 5 races to Wanstead then SNRPC Arras where she was Stuart’s second bird next morning winning 135th Open. This year 4 races to Wanstead again with the KRPA then on to Andrezel sitting a 4-day youngster. Somehow Stuart managed to miss this hen as he was doing his chores about the loft, she was found sitting on her nest. Her breeding is the late Dale Newcombe from a brother of Lothian Lass.

Davy and Mrs Elliot have shown why their loft has been at the top in pigeon racing for many many years with their outstanding performance in this race. Four of their six entries on the Open result flying 560 miles is incredible on a very hard day. The Section winner is an 06 Dark Chec cock his sire is a full brother of Brain Dickson of Galashiels 4th sect 4th open Falaise the dam is a Red hen from a son of the Good White Flight Hen winner of 1st sect 9th open Falaise. This hen scored 4 times from the channel. 2nd Sect Is an 05 Blue Hen her Sire was a son of Dale Newconbe’s 5th Open Niort. The Dam is a daughter of Davy’s old Rennes Hen X Sparky. 3rd Sect A two-year-old Dark Hen her Sire is a son of the White Flight Cock 3 times a winner from the channel. Her Dam is bred from Their Old Chec Cock when paired to their 5th Sect 5th Open Falaise winner. 4th Sect A very worthy winner, this was his 5th win from the channel now eight years old and retired I’m sure to sire a few more channel pigeons for the Elliot lofts.

Yet another loft in great form this season, Ian timed his 07 Late Bred Chec Hen at 21.09. This pigeon had 3 or 4 tosses as a youngster and only one race as a yearling this season she had four races to Leicester and 5 X 30 mile tosses and was sent to the National sitting 12 day eggs. Her breeding is Jock Allen and Eric Fox.

1st Section D 24th Open Frank Baillie Clackmannan

Another 1st section win for Frank this time with an 05 Blue cock racing 562 miles into Clackmannan

Once again it has been proved that in distance racing it is Quality not Quantity that matters with 10 on the day birds recorded out of our small but select convoy, returns next morning were good, so good in fact that our members stopped clocking at 624 ypm when a good many birds making the journey in race time not clocked would have made the result.
Pigeons returning in race time on a hard race should be worthy of a time in, it doesn’t cost you anything to put it in the clock and your pigeon making the effort could get a well deserved place.

We can safely say that the experience of convoying and being released along with a great organisation like the Up North Combine was a resounding success our Chairman George Wilson was delighted with the outcome and we now look forward to our last channel event of the year from Lillers on the 18th July again with the U.N.C.
