IRISH SOUTH ROAD FED ANNUAL DINNER & PRIZE DISTRIBUTION

Post by adie »

RUBY CELEBRATION FOR IRISH S.R.F

The Annual Dinner and Prize Distribution for the Irish South Road Federation was somewhat of a special occasion this year for the Ireland based organisation which has a membership well over 700 taking in fanciers from Wicklow to Monaghan was celebrating its 40th Anniversary since its formation in 1968 with the vast majority of the membership based within Dublin City and the surrounding areas. This year the committee decided to mark such an occasion and headed to the plush Green Isle Hotel, on Saturday 8th of November for their annual prize giving. I was indeed very honoured to be invited to this prestigious event by the committee of this fine organisation especially to be the main guest in such a memorable year. The turnout was fantastic to say the least with many visitors from across the water in attendance having been at the Annual Dublin Show earlier that day. My wife Celeste and I were shown to our seats upon arrival and enjoyed the company of the ISRF President Mr Henry Byrne, Ian & Peter Gibb, Geert De Clercq sales Manager from Bricon ETS and to complete our table we had the pleasure of spending the evening with Brian Bolton and Tony Seery of the mighty Premier Stud in England. It wasn’t long before the tantalizing 5 course meal was served and what a treat it was, one of the best all round meals I have enjoyed in some time, made all the more enjoyable with the excellent company around our table.

Following the completion of the meal which was served impeccably to which the staff must be congratulated upon, faultless to say the least it was over to the President Mr Henry Byrne to get the prize distribution under way, in his opening address to around 150 fanciers, family, friends and visitors he welcomed all in attendance and made a special mention about the members who had sadly passed a way during 2008 notably they included Mr J White, Mr J Howe, Mr M Gahan and Mr K Banbrick Snr. Henry on behalf of the Federation Committee extended sympathies to the families of these dedicated fanciers that had brought so much to the sport of pigeon racing over the years. On summing up on the 2008 seasons Henry went on to elaborate on what was a very difficult year of racing just not for the Federation members but indeed difficulties that were shared by every fancier in the whole island of Ireland with regards the weather situation, the buck stops none further than Henry for he is also the race controller for the Federation and no man takes more abuse when things go wrong than Henry.

Not surprisingly the Federation is in a very good financial position, and most of this is down mainly to the excellent management of the highly committed members of the ISRF Committee who put in place some prudent financial polices over the last number of seasons. Inevitably it may require some unpalatable decisions to be made for 2009 but it is hoped that the Federation members will continue to indorse all that the committee come up with as their track record has proved they are on the pulse of all that is happening and this must surely be one of the main reasons why this fantastic organisation that is the Irish South Road Federation is looked upon as one of the leading Feds just not in Ireland or England but very much Europe also and one that the membership should be very proud to be a part off.

(Glenavy 56) The man of the moment for the fourth time Gerry O'Mara is the ISRF Fancier of the Year seen here lifting his award from Adie McCormick of http://www.pigeonnetwork.com.

One man I know who is very proud to be a member is Gerry O’Mara the 2008 ISRF Fancier of the Year this now his fourth time having previously won it in 2001, 2002 and 2007 he also finished runner –up in 1999 and 2003. What a record in such a competitive Federation. It seems as if this man has been involved a life time in fact since he was 13 years of age (Not going to give his age away) but lets say it was a while ago. Gerry joined up in partnership with his father Bill who is highly regarded and very well known throughout the south of Ireland. The club that they joined was at that time the very competitive Dublin North East as like any father and son partnership as the younger generation get more knowledgeable this often leads to different and varying thoughts on how to improve each week which inevitably leads to more lofts with the experienced mans system and the younger more vigorous and enthusiastic generation taking over racing to his own loft. To this day both father and son race an impeccable team of pigeons to a couple of different lofts, with Gerry joining the Kildonagh & District club around 2005 which is situated on the North Side of Dublin and has a very competitive membership touching the 40 mark. Both father and son continue to use the same stock loft to the best of my knowledge and split the youngsters. The family of pigeons that have proved their worth and made Gerry the man to catch each week are made up of Busschaerts from Alan Hindhaugh, Van Loons from Davie Reid and other exceptional pigeons added over time from Tom Boland, Richard Hogg and Willie Brennan. What a programme of racing the Federation committee put together in total 17 O/Bird races and 12 Y/Bird ones with the O/Birds kicking off on April the 12th and the youngsters on July the 12th. Some of the top performances this year for the O’Mara loft included 5th Federation Laoow O/Birds 431/8,059; 10th Federation Rosscarbery 405/7,343; 1st Federation in the Barleycove Open Race with 362 members sending 4,667 birds; in the difficult Sennen Cove the loft finished 2nd Federation behind the Bray loft of Cowap & Buckley who had an exceptional year also. From the 2nd Barleycove Race the Gerry O’Mara loft finished 15th Federation with some 2,423 pigeons competing. Similarly to the O/Birds the O’Mara loft was slow out of the traps at the start of the Y/Bird season. Even though out of the stalls slow in both seasons the O’Mara loft topped the points table by more than 300 a head of another legend that is Tom Nelson of Ballymun. In the Y/Birds Rosscarbery was to be the start of an incredible season that seen even his pigeons tested such was his dominance, I will point out at this stage as Henry Byrne did during the presentation his pigeons where found to be completely clear which met with loud applause in the room and as I have said when commenting on such cases within my regular columns to do with pigeons in the north of Ireland consider it an honour to be asked to get a sample from your pigeons, just shows how well you are doing. In Rosscarbery the loft finished 3rd, 5th and 12th Federation against 3,508 pigeons, then the loft got going the following week from Thurles Gerry finished 4th, 7th, 9th and 10th against 9,479 members; the next week he was to finish 1st, 14th, 18th, 19th and 20th Federation from Pilmore Beach with some 6,500 pigeons competing; he wasn’t to slow down making Pilmore Beach look easy a fortnight later taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 13th, 18th and 20th Federation against 5,610 pigeons; and in the final race from Rosscarbery yet again an Open race he was to win it with a margin of 66 yards with over 3,000 pigeons competing. As well as winning fancier of the year by 300 points Gerry also won Y/Bird of the Year with a Cheq Cock IHU 08 S 107611 this ace racer finished 10th Federation Thurles, 19th Fed Pilmore Beach and 28th Fed Pilmore Beach. He also had 5 other Y/Birds in the top 10 of the Y/B Champion section. Gerry was the Y/Bird Points winner by an incredible 1032 points ahead of Derek Larkin of the mighty Finglas Club will point out at this stage that the Finglas RPC won the Irish South Road Fed Club Points Shield with a clear 5,000 points I would imagine this is one of the highest if not the biggest winning margins in the history of the organisation. Gerry O’Mara was also the Top 100 Points Winner. The O’Mara loft to complete an incredible year finished top of Section N in both the O/Bird and Y/Bird seasons also completing the treble by winning the best over-all loft in Section N of the mighty Irish South Road Federation.

Glenavy 49) Runner-up in the race for ISRF Fancier of the Year was Tom Nelson from the Ballymun Club, what a years racing this man has had.

Tom Nelson of Ballymun finished runner – up for the second year in succession having won the Fancier of the Year Crown in 2006. Personally I rate Tom as one of the most outstanding fanciers flying in the ISRF to which there are many, only through Tom’s links with the North that I have come to know him over recent times. He has probably outside of Glen Buckleys loft one of the best collections of Soontjens from the late Sam Buckley of Annaghmore. Added to these he has a wonderful collection of Willy Thas pigeons sourced from a number of places including excellent stock pigeons both from Micky Betts and John Clements, of the more recent times he has sought an excellent collection of the Louis Panis pigeons which are doing the business especially from Sennen Cove. Must be something in them for this year Tom is the Irish South Road Federation Channel Races Points Winner 118 points ahead of formidable Derek Cummins from Finglas. Also he collects the crown for the most points won in all Open Races flying with the ISRF on top of this he is the Top O/B Points Winner some 2,600 clear of Gerry O’Mara and also finishing 1st in the list for the Top 100 O/Birds Points Table of 2008 900 + points clear of the formidable Brian Brady of the mighty Greenhills & district Club. Some outstanding results in 2008 for Tom included 21st Federation from Mallow against 8,059 pigeons; 18th Fed the following week from Rosscarbery 7,343 Birds; 9th, 11th, 17th, 19th, 22nd, 25th Federation from the Barleycove Open Race; 6th, 17th, 23rd and 25th from Tramore 8,591 pigeons; 15th and 18th Fed from Pilmore Beach against 6,013 pigeons; 14th and 15th Fed from Talbenny (two arrivals together) 2,129 birds; 2nd federation the following week from Talbenny also finishing 19th Fed with 1,310 pigeons competing; 9th from Rosscarbery once again with 4,842 pigeons competing, then from Sennen Cove on the same day 24th Federation against 2,246 pigeons; from Mallow yet again the loft finished 15th Federation against 3,741 pigeons (just to cap before I go on, all performances listed are all within the first 25 of each Fed result, they publish 100 but be assured many other pigeons are clocked by the top two lofts throughout the results which would take awesome space in this publication if I were to list them all) back to Sennen Cove on the 14th of June Tom finished 25th Fed against 1,939; Barleycove seen the loft finish 23rd Fed against 2,423 birds to wrap up the O/Bird season. Y/Birds had to take a back step this year due to Tom’s wife Ellea losing her mother through ill health, this sadly for a second year effected Tom’s Y/Bird season for last year Tom lost his own mother during the start of the Y/Birds and to finish runner-up in the Fancier of the Year race both last year and this year is some achievement with partically no Y/Bird racing, this year I think Tom managed to send to three races in the Y/Birds and finished from Thurles 1st Club, 16th Federation against 9,479 Birds; the following week from Pilmore Beach 1st Club, 6th Federation against 6,508 pigeons; 2nd & 3rd Club from Pilmore Beach yet again finishing 69th and 70th in the Federation against 5,000 + pigeons. Truly outstanding and one who will surely be making a push to recapture the crown from Gerry in 2009.

(Glenavy 47) Adie McCormick presents Derek Larkin with one of his many awards picked up during the ISRF Dinner & Prize Distribution in the GreenIsle Hotel Dublin.

Completing the top three in 2008 we have the outstanding fancier from the very strong and competitive Finglas RPC Derek Larkin, Derek has had an outstanding season just not at Club level where he has to compete against the likes of D Cummins & Son & Dann, A Farrell, C K Emmett & Sons, the excellent D Turner, The Boland Loft, Mr & Mrs D Killeen, N Deegan, J McLoughlin, Danny Dalton, Arthurs Bros, The Owens loft and L Donnelly & Son just to name a few all top lofts flying in a top organisation, but these are the boys to beat each week at the club then which is the strongest going by the Points Trophy this year the Finglas Club won the Points Shield by more than 5,000 points and when presenting the award to Mick Gilligan he was very proud of such achievement by the members of the Finglas Club, when you win such a strong Club you then look to the Federation for news.
