The Irish Homing Union National Flying Club held their first National race of the season last Saturday May 11th, an Inland event from Valentia Island.

With a fair weather forecast enroute the birds were released at 11:15 am into a light north east wind, however there may have been some west in it for the early part of the race as the results show.

Taking first section D and probable first Open on a velocity of 1459ypm is Ian Harty from Dungarvan, Ian's timer was a two year blue hen flown celibate.
Sire of the hen is a Soontjen from Jimmy Kelly of Carlow, purchased at his clearance sale about 5 years ago, to date this cock has bred a host of other winners for Ian, the dam is from two of JJ Hurley's birds purchased as a batch of six young birds some years back, these were mainly of the Hoffkens breed.
Ian would like to thank the organisers of the race and also the convoyer's for the excellent condition of the birds on their return from the race. Ian was delighted with this result and the quick return of his full team of 19/19.

Second section D and probable second open on a velocity of 1441ypm was Marcus Power of the Tower Inv club in Waterford city, Marcus's pigeon is a nice little yearling cheq hen sent sitting tight on four eggs in the corner of the Hen's loft. This hen is bred from two of JJ Hurley's birds purchased at his removal sale about two years ago, Marcus kept the pair together and this hen is the result of their first years breeding. Again, Marcus was delighted with his full returns of 11 from 11 sent.

In 3rd Section D and probable 3rd Open is Michael Pepper from the Tower Inv club in Waterford city , Michaels velocity was 1424ypm and his bird was a two year old blue Van Loon / Cuesters hen raced on the roundabout system.

1st in section C was JJ Hurley from the Barrow Valley RPC in Carlow. JJ's timer is a yearling blue cock flown on the widowhood system, he has been a consistent racer so far but this is his first time to appear at the top of the sheet. The cock is bred from a hen which was a 1st Open National winner for Davy Hurley when paired to a son of two 1st open National winners for Jimmy Hurley, these are prolific winning pigeons for the whole Hurley family. JJ has just returned to racing after a short break, and with only a small team of ten birds he has already won two club and two Federation races plus 1st section from only four races flown so far. JJ's bird achieved 1386ypm and he also had full returns of 10/10.

In second section C we have Leon Gaffney From the Naas club in Co Kildare, Leon clocked his good yearling blue hen on a velocity of 1385ypm. The hen has had all the races so far this season and has been coming well, being with the first birds home most weeks, Leon has also had a good start to the season, having already won a 1st & 2nd Fed.

In 3rd Section C we have Donal Begley from the Carlow & Dist club, no details on Donal's bird.
our next race will be from St Cleres on Wednesday May 22nd and is the first of our channel races this year.

Any members clocking in 123 in their section, please get in touch with me on the following number with details of your bird and a photo if possibly.
