John Patterson wins Open in a steady 1st Fermoy

Saturday May 4th saw the 3,000 plus convoy of East Down Combine birds at Fermoy for the 4th race of the season and it was a beautiful day with a North North East wind for the birds to fly into for the journey home so Velocities were expected in and around 40mph which the leading birds managed to exceed .

For a second time this season it was Ballylesson which had the Open winner ,this one to that exceptional veteran fancier John Patterson who is still at the top of his game even at 90+ and he also topped the 2 bird club the previous week from Thurles . The next four birds in the open from Fermoy were to three Dundonald lofts with Roy Irwin the first of these then two to the Brown and McConnell team with Cowan & McCartney next and these five birds take the top five in the West section . At 6th open and first of the East Section birds it is the Cloughey partnership of Cully and Monan with Portvogie’s Ambrose & Kelly next and it is then back to the West Section to Newtownbreda’s B Hogg & sons with Cloughey’s Gordon Bros & Sons completing the Open top ten . This week the Combine are in Mallow just slightly further than Fermoy . The Open And Section result of this the first race of the season from Fermoy was ;
