The East Down Combine was formed in 1967 and caters for pigeons fanciers within the County of Down in Northern Ireland. There are currently 22 clubs with approx 200 members sending a birdage of up to 5,000 pigeons each week. The Combine is currently spilt into 2 Section with a line running North to South creating an East to West Section. The membership currently race for 40 Open positions and 20 Section positions on a weekly basis. The Combine is affiliated to The Irish Homing Union Regulating and Promoting the Sport of Pigeon Racing in Ireland since 1895. The East Down Combine 2019 Young Bird season got underway on Saturday 20th July with the Opening race from Navan . The first Young bird race this year saw the birds released at 10am into a Westerly wind . The top two in the Open just topped the 1500ypm but most clubs recorded velocities in the 1300 or 1400 hundreds as the youngsters sorted themselves out in this first event .

Pride of place leading the Combine was Bangor’s David Hamilton who I know has put a lot of work into his birds in preparation for this season’s young bird racing and good to see this being rewarded . Next to him it’s down to Annalong to Jim Newell and we stay in Annalong for the next four birds to John Trimble and son who have had a fantastic 2019 season .

It’s up to Dundonald for the next 9 positions shared between 6 lofts and it’s then over to Davy Hamilton again who had the top five in Bangor . At section level the West section was totally dominated by the Dundonald club who took all 20 places in the section with the partnership of Brown & McConnell being the first of these .The East section saw the first six in the open taking the top six place in this section .
