Penzance YB Nat - 1st Open K Henderson & Son

It was in 1932 that His Majesty King George V presented a new cup to the Irish National Flying Club to be known as The King George V Challenge Cup and was to be awarded to the winner of the OB Grand National.

The 1932 Grand National race was flown from Les Sables at a distance of some 600 miles and the race was won by R Hawthorn from Ligoniel in North Belfast. This race was flown under IHU rules and it was not until 1948 that the Kings Cup was flown under IHU and RPRA rules. The race in 1948 was won by Sammy Robinson from Belfast.

The Irish National Flying Club have a six race programme for the 2020 season which enables its members to compete in the inland Nationals or over the channel at the very highest level. I hope you will enjoy using the website as it will be a source of information through out the season. Good luck to all members competing in this years Nationals. Ronnie Johnston Patron INFC.

Penzance YB Grand National 2019 –

1st North Section, 1st Open K Henderson & Son, Lurgan Social, vel 1389 flying 302 miles, winning £817 plus J M K McGugan Perpetual Cup for the winner

Kevin Henderson of Lurgan Social fulfilled a lifetime ambition by winning the Penzance YB National. He had a fantastic card with four birds high in the result. Congratulations from all your club mates. Kevin's winner is a medium sized cheque red flight cock sent feeding a 9 day old YB. He was bred from a cock gifted from good friends Darren Thompson and partner Debbie Lunn and is Jan Aarden lines. The dam is a Paul Dunlop hen so good distance lines here. Both the cock and his nest mate 23rd Open, were chosen for this at a very young age and subsequently had a few select races in preparation. With the help of club mate Denis Lyness they had several tosses from the border and 2 or 3 from Annagassan. His birds are fed on Henry Mclaughlins corn and Frazers best plus Frazerform, top class feed at real good prices. The loft is favourite to win the 2 Bird Average, Kevin is a long serving member of the NIPA Committee and can succeed in the show pen as well winning many 1sts including Dublin and Belfast. Thanks to Martin Douglas for the info.

1st South Section, 2nd Open Byrne & Bradley Newtown Kilpedder, vel 1381 flying 206 miles, winning £632 plus William Ervin Memorial Cup for Sect winner not winning 1st Open, and Jarvis Cup for best Ave Penzance & Skibbereen YB Nationals

I took the trip down to Wicklow today to see the lads and get some info on their great season they had this year, the lads had a brilliant season this year winning 10 x 1st clubs in the very competitive Newtown Kilpedder club in County Wicklow. The highlight of the year and main reason for this article is the YB Grand National Penzance, the lads had fantastic day sending just 5 birds and timing 2 on the day from wat was a very testing race as it is every year for young birds from Penzance. The lads first pigeon home in the Grand National was a lovely cheq cock, a darkness youngster this lad had a few races prior to the national but not as many as the entire darkness team as he got a bang in training and missed a few weeks racing. After when he was back fit again the lads gave him one more land race and then he went into the national and turned in a fantastic performance that day winning 1st Club Newtown,1st South Leinster Fed, 1st South of Ireland and 2nd Open YB Grand National, a great achievement from the lads and this super little pigeon. This pigeon was bred by Sheldon Leonard & Yannick for the lads and is Freddie vandeheed & Jan de bishop bloodlines. Sheldon who is based in Arklow sent the lads up a kit of young birds to try this year and they flew extremely well for them, one other youngster from the kit also winning Bird of the Year in the club for the lads. They were very happy with that kit of young birds, the lads 2nd arrival from Penzance that day was a gift youngster from Pompeii Plunket from Bray, this was no surprise to me that the lads went close as they were having a super season on land and cross channel as they also won Bude this year and won 1st Club in the Yearling National Penzance race. The lads fly there young bird team on the darkness system and like to train them at least 3 or 4 times a week through-out the season. The old bird team here is flown on roundabout system but they also road train the old bird team rather than just loft fly and it's certainly working because this loft has really been firing in the result over the past few seasons. I'm not surprised either, as I know how much work the lads put in everyday in the garden and hard work does pay off with good pigeons. I note the lads also won the INFC Jarvis Cup this year for Best average in YB Skibbereen national and the YB Penzance national. The bird that was up in Skibbereen national was a Sticker Donckers from Thomas Maguire of Sandyhill in Dublin, these Sticker Donckers from Thomas deserve a mention as I know since Jason got these in a few years ago his results have got better and better and again this year the Sticker Donkers also winning a lot of races for the lads, they really are a super family of pigeons. Well done lads on a great season and I'm sure there will be even better to come in the next few years, super racing from a super loft all year in 2019. Jamie Kelly PO.

2nd North Section, 3rd Open Gary Murphy, Ballyholland, vel 1327 flying 282 miles, winning £289

My 3rd National Hen is a dark check. I bred it of a gift bird from Gary Hughes to a hen out of Donnelly Bros. and Sands & Rice. She was 32nd Open out of Talbenny National. I am happy with this season's racing. I was also 1st Open from Fermoy out of 12,018 birds, 4th Open from Bude out of 6,013 birds, 9th Open from Castletown Yearling national out of 2,653 birds and 25th Open from Kings Cup St Allouestre out of 2,478 birds. Thanks to Gary Hughes for following up info and results in the Newry City.

3rd North Section, 4th Open Mr & Mrs B McNeilly, Doagh & District, vel 1325 flying 321 miles, winning 139

The winner for the East Antrim partnership was a Van Rijn Blue hen and was sent to the race showing to a cock. She is a G/dtr of “Double Top” who was a winner of 6 x 1st Sections. Her sire was a winner of 2 Inland and 4 Cross Channel races, including 4th Section Talbenny, 2nd Section & 7th Open Bude, and 4th Section Penzance. The parents were half-brother and half-sister mating. The partnership was also 29th Open and this hen was 1st Club, 8th Section, 17th Open NIPA the previous week from Talbenny Y B National. Another top performance from a top racing loft in East Antrim. Many thanks to Noel Higginson for the info.

4th North Section, 5th Open D & H Stuart, Ballymoney HPS, vel 1324 flying 346 miles, winning £130

D & H Stuart are very consistent racers in the big Ballymoney HPS, with the quality of the membership it’s hard to lift the Red Card. The loft timed a very early bird into their lofts in Dervock at 15.40hrs and just finished part of a yard behind M/M McNeilly in the Muckamore Centre. The pigeon timed is a Cheq Pied hen and it had 4 races down Ireland and was the lofts first bird clocked from Talbenny on the Monday winning 4th Club, previous best performance in this race was 3rd Open in 2013. Sire is Van Wildermeersch x Soontjen. Dam is Soontjen and is a half-sister of the lofts 2nd Open Bude in the NIPA. Feeding is Versele Laga and Beatties.

5th North Section, 6th Open Tom McClean, Annaghmore, vel 1324 flying 301 miles, winning £266

Another fantastic season for Tom McClean of Annaghmore in Portadown, 1st Club & 6th Open INFC having timed in all 6 INFC Nationals for the second year in a row, he won National Champion in 2018. The bird timed here was the best of Gary Benson from Lisburn who has a fantastic long distance family, Tommy has the best from this loft. The sire has the lines of the Silver Award birds paired to the famous Fantail Hen who is a half-sister of the Benson Hall of Fame winner this year. The Benson hen was paired to a son of Tommy’s own good Blue cock again full of distance bloodlines through the Kings Cup winner for Tommy Moorehouse and the late Ken Hyne. When racing this cock won 58th in Portland, 15th Lamballe and then finally 16th in the Kings Cup Grand National.

6th North Section, 7th Open Danny Dixon, Ballymoney HPS, vel 1309 flying 339 miles, winning 994

Triple National winner Danny Dixon of Rasharkin. This is a fancier who needs no introduction to the fancy, always thereabouts in the major races and has amassed many top ten finishes in derby and national events including 3 x 1st Open National wins. The first of these was the INFC Skibbereen YB National in 1998 followed by a NIPA Rosscarbery YB National in 2006 and then the INFC Penzance YB National in 2010. Other big results include 2nd Open NIPA Old Bird Derby from St. Malo and 2nd Open NIPA Penzance OB Classic. Danny had a fantastic Penzance race timing 7 of his 14 entries in just half an hour. Positions taken were 7th, 14th, 35th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd and 59th Open. The first bird timed at 15:36 hrs was a blue hen that had been slipped a youngster before basketing. The sire of this hen is Danny's ace stock bird "Belgie Cock" This Wildemeersch cock is a great grandson of the famous "De Beer" He is sire of Ryan Barr's North Coast Classic winner, G.Sire of B Coyles Section A Talbenny YB National and G.Sire of J McDowell & Sons of Ballymoney NIPA Talbenny YB National winner. The dam of the 7th Open hen was purchased at a sale last year for Martin Graham of Ballymena and is a daughter of "The Big Hen" Danny's second bird timed at 15:38 hrs was a blue chequer cock, breeding is De Rauw-Sablon x Joss Josson. Thanks to PO Mervyn Eagleson for this report.

7th North Section, 8th Open S & E Buckley, Edgarstown, vel 1309 flying 299 miles, winning £186

The S & E Buckley team have been consistent all year and score a big result from Penzance. Their blue pied hen was just flying till the perch, her sire was a cock that we bought from Joe Brown at the Ballyclare Fair as a young bird and he won 3 x 1st for the partnership. Her dam is a hen they bought in, from Herbie Thorpe’s sale 2 years ago in Blackpool, we call her the 35 pound hen. She’s a grand-daughter of Herbies Kings Cup winner “Berts Girl”. Thanks to Gary Simmons for the info.

8th & 9th North Section and 9th & 10th Open G Quinn, Coalisland & District, vel 1306 and 1306 flying 309 miles, winning £140

Two fantastic birds together in Coalisland for G Quinn, both were racing Darkness, and breeding for the two birds is Louella Jan Aarden that have had great success in Northern Ireland plus Sjaak Buwalda, the very best of long distance bloodlines. The loft finished 14th Open in the Yearling Nat earlier in the year.

The INFC Committee are grateful once again for all the help at the race marking, and also all those involved in the various Clock Centres across Ireland over the days of the race, every little bit of help is appreciated. On a personal note thanks to all those who supplied text and photos for this report, some at short notice, or helped in any other way. The more info we get the better job can be done, any little snips, details of the bird itself plus info on the sire and dam. Any awards won previous, how long in the birds etc. This report is the Top 10, results from Clubs, Feds, Combine, etc. to follow. This will complete my second season back as PO, I have tried to extend coverage as best as possible and feature as many winners as possible. They don’t all fall within the Top 10. The Annual Dinner & Prize presentation will be held at the Stormont Hotel in Belfast on Friday 29th November, tickets at £30 should be booked ASAP, rooms at the hotel can be booked through Secretary Trevor Topping or Ronnie Johnston Tel: (028) 90 483625. I hope to feature some of the seasons special award winners following the presentation of prizes, our Website http://www.pigeonnetwork had a dedicated board for INFC, look in the Forum, also we have an INFC History site, link for it on the front page.

Re: Penzance YB Nat - 1st Open K Henderson & Son

Post by willie reynolds »

Penzance Grand Nat won by “Kevin’s Pride” -

The Blue Riband YB Grand National was due to be flown on Wednesday 4th September but the race marking was delayed due to strong to gale force north westerly winds forecast on the Irish Sea for the middle part of the week, the situation was to change over the coming weekend with a more favourable forecast. Race marking took place in the early afternoon of Friday and 278 members entered 1527 pigeons in the race and were competing for £14,641.00 in pools and prize money. The pigeons were released at 8.00am on Sunday 8th September, the wind at the release site was light northerly which was to turn to south south westerly on route. Winning birds were recorded in the Muckamore Station shortly after 3.00pm and we had a steady flow of birds till after 6.00pm, rain and drizzle closed the race out early. Mr & Mrs McNeilly had the big early bird fantastic racers in Doagh & Dist and had a good card with four birds timed and just over 40 recorded in the Muckamore Station. The Ballymoney men arrived early with D & H Stuart winning 1st Club flying 346 miles just ahead of Danny Dixon who had won all club races up to this time. Danny had five birds timed including three arrivals at the one time, he will be happy enough lifting well over £1,000 with his first bird all pools and nominated. Arnold Thompson from Ballyclare is ever present and a good result as well for club-mates W R Moore & Son competing for the first time sending six birds and timing four. Robert Turkington from Doagh, always a good help had a super race with three birds in the clock. A very typical Penzance YB National, some fantastic results and many lofts with no birds home. The YB Nat Penzance is a favourite race for Kevin Henderson of Lurgan Social, he has timed many good birds over the years and as I said before none better than to win 1st Open INFC. It was bad luck indeed for Herman McAvoy who races to three different lofts and had mixed up the registration of the young bird team, easy done and a reminder that all members should closely check their Allocation Sheets, very few do.
