Harper & Young best from Fast Mallow

The EDC birds were in Mallow for the 4th race of the season on the weekend of the 27th /28th June . The race had been scheduled for Saturday 27th June but again forecasts were so poor for the Saturday that a decision was made to go on Saturday night for a possible Sunday release but the forecasts were so disappointing for that whole weekend that many lofts decided to give the race a miss altogether and this is reflected in the total birdage . I must admit Sunday was far from promising with strong winds and periods of rain but it appears that a narrow window of opportunity appeared and birds were away at 12noon into a Westerly wind saw the birds making velocities in excess of 2000ypm (around 70 mph ) with the birds coming in high .
Winning the open was the Cloughey loft of Harper and Young out on the East Coast with Dundonald’s BCT Foulis &Gill in 2nd place and these two lofts were the East and West Section winners respectively . The Open winner I believe is a Mealy cock which the Cloughey partnership got from Bangor’s R Moore & son.
It was back to Cloughey for 3rd open to the lofts of C & H Cully and the next four birds in the open were to Ballylesson’s John Patterson followed by Bangor’s R Moore & son .

The weather committee ,and all involved in the race are to be congratulated on making what must have been a some very difficult decisions over that weekend and I suspect given the current weather pattern there will be more difficult decisions in the weeks ahead . This weekend the Combine have two races scheduled the Skibbereen Classic and the first cross channel race from Talbenny but once again the weather forecast is far from promising . However the Young Bird programme is planned to go ahead as scheduled commencing on July 25th which means it will be one week later than the original schedule but hopefully will be able to go ahead unhindered .
