For the second time at Skibbereen the NIPA had arranged the Yearling National, now just the one race and members can enter the maximum 20 birds either cocks or hens. The race marking was delayed for one day again weather problems and the birds were released on Wednesday 15th July at 10.30am in a Lt Westerly wind. Many congratulation to G & M Atcheson of Ligoniel a loft probably having a best-ever season having already topped the East Antrim Sect from Tullamore, Gowran Park and Corrin, and in this race 1st Sect & 1st Open NIPA. They were just ahead of J & D Braniff who had 1st Section in the Skibbereen OB Inland National.

Mickey also takes the pools. Congratulations to Mickey Rabbit on a super performance today from Skibbereen. The sire of the winning pigeon is from my old family of Leo Van Rijns. This cock has now bred Michael 3 x 1st up into the Northwest. After speaking to Michael a short time ago, today’s race wasn’t straight forward as it rarely ever is for the guys up the country. Michael informed me it was closed in all day but that didn’t stop the brave little fella coming through. The sire of the winning pigeon is a half-brother of 1st Open Ulster Fed St Malo Old Bird Derby 2015. Gary Jennings.

Harry Boyd wins 1st MAC in the Skibbereen Yearling Nat -

The second major race of the season was the Yearling National from Skibbereen. Birds were liberated on Wednesday 15th July at 10.30am in a light westerly wind. Best bird in the area and winning the Mid Antrim Combine was Kells fancier Harry Boyd. He timed his blue chequer widowhood cock at 16.12pm for the 257 miles fly to the village. The bird was from R & J Baxter of Ballycarry, and he also wins 2nd Section B and 148th Open National 2980 birds. This was Harry's second combine win of the season having topped both Combine and Section from Gowran Park in the second week of the season. Mervyn Eagleson PO.
