Penzance birds returned to Ireland – Mal Maguire tops NIPA from Fermoy

The penultimate race of the old bird season was flown from Fermoy, the birds has firstly been transported to Penzance on Wednesday but with weather problems on Friday and the same forecast for the next few days liberation was looking uncertain and the convoy was immediately returned to Ireland. The Fermoy liberation took place on Saturday 25th July which just now leaves the OB Nat due to be flown from St Malo probably on Thursday 30th July. It will be the oly race from France in 2020, a large entry is expected and some loft in Ireland will enter the history books. Getting back to Fermoy, another race dominated in Newry & Dist and congratulations to Mal Maguire & Son who were clear of two birds for record breaker Ron Williamson.

The partnership timed at 11.52am for the 200 mile fly to their Drumtara lofts. This yearling blue cock was driving his hen and was winning it's second race of the season having won Gowran Park. A good yearling cock this considering it was unraced as a youngster. Sire is from Dave Stone of Derbyshire and dam is from their good Soontjen cock which has bred a 5 x 1st winner and a 2 x 1st winner. Well done guys.

I was actually 1st, 10th, 30th, 50th Section E and 10th, 52nd, 150th and 225th Open with my small entry of 12 birds. This lovely little hen was raced on my jealousy/widowhood system. Well done Davy, first big win as NIPA President.

Great result for the Junior branch of Larkin Brothers with H T &J Larkin taking the spoils from Fermoy with their yearling mealy hen, her sire was a gift from our good friend W R Capper of Capper Bros a son off his YB National winner. It’s Tom and Joseph’s birthday tomorrow so it’s a great early present for them.

Antrim Area Update – The penultimate race of the old bird season was arranged for Penzance, a big event each year in the calendar of the year, a very poor weather forecast for Cornwall area had caused many difficulties. The NIPA were very keen to fulfil the programme and at short notice birds were marked on Wednesday for a possible release in Penzance on Friday. The convoy were on site in late afternoon on Thursday and liberation was expected on Friday. All plans fell apart on Friday morning with conditions on the release site and en-route not satisfactory for a liberation. The NIPA very quickly decided that with the next few days not going to be any better the convoy would return to Ireland. Irish SR Federation also decided to race mark Wednesday and were forced to hold over on both Friday and Saturday. They did manage a liberation in Penzance at 7.00am on Sunday and it turned out difficult at 230 miles, but a lot of birds did make home lofts on the day.

The NIPA cancelled the Old Bird Classic to be flown in conjunction with Penzance and all entry fees and pools were to be returned, the convoy was diverted to Fermoy and birds were released on Saturday 25th July at 8.00am to compete for Open & Sect Diplomas but the race would not be included for any other awards or averages. The best local bird in the Antrim Area was timed by McConville Bros who had a Super Card in Crumlin & District and topped the NIPA Sect B on velocity 1585. The winner was well bred, the very best Danny van Dyke, the sire of this bird has already bred three winners, so this latest winner is his 4th x 1st Sect B winner, not many of them about. The hen that finished 2nd Sect B in this race was also Danny van Dyke, this hen is a full sister to the North Coast Classic winner from last year’s One Loft Race in Coleraine.

Houston Bros win Mid Antrim for Randalstown – Penzance in Cornwall was to be the race point for the third channel race of the season. Because of poor weather on the day of liberation and the following day it was decided to bring the birds back to Ireland for a race from Fermoy in County Cork. The birds were liberated on Saturday 25th July at 08.00am in a westerly wind. Best bird in the Mid Antrim Combine this week are Randalstown old hands 85 year old Bobby and 79 year old Allen who make up the Houston Bros partnership. They timed their 2 year old widowhood cock at 11.45am for the 195 mile fly to their lofts situated off the Antrim line close to the Ramble Inn. Breeding is their old distance lines with a touch of Verheye. A good win for the brothers who have previously won 1st and 2nd Open NIPA Tramore, a number of years ago.
