The Premier YB National was flown from Talbenny in South Wales last weekend, bar the headwind everything looked perfect with the sea calm, sky clear and the sun shining, it was all nearly too good. I thought myself it might be ok, sadly that was not the case and it looks like many birds did not leave the mainland and returns were poor with a number of lofts failing to time any arrivals. The NIPA plus East Coast Fed (Dublin), Ulster Federation and East Down Combine birds were released at 8.00am in a Lt Westerly wind that was to get stronger over the course of the day. The overall winner is Ron Williamson from Bondhill who adds to his open win record, top velocity was 1214. The season had been going so well, we have come back with a bump and must recover now for the rest of the programme including the Blue Riband YB Nat Penzance. Something like 70 members timed a nominated bird in the INFC Yearling Nat and the Robin Duddy Trophy will go to the best average over both Ylr Nat and Penzance YB Nat. Remember its a 3 Bird Nomination open only to those who paid the entry fee, the winner is the best average over the two races. Race marking will be in Lisburn on Monday for Old Hens and Young Birds, the races are planned to be flown on Wednesday 9th September from Penzance.

In the One Loft Races locally we are waiting for the Grand Finale events, North Coast Classic in Coleraine birds are flying from Cork City (240 miles) Sunday 6th September and Emerald Classic in Ballyclare birds flying from Rosscarbery (260 miles) Sunday 13th September. Latest news is that Coleraine fancier Anthony McDonnell came very close in the RPRA One Loft race last week from Truro (176 miles), a handful of seconds behind the overall winner to finish 4th Open and collect £4,000. Just before that Adie McCormick from Lisburn took 1st Open in the Galway Classic flown from the Giants Causeway. Races this weekend include NIPA in Fermoy with 5 Bird Classic, EDC in Nenagh and Ulster Federation in Mallow.

All liberations were delayed at the weekend due to poor conditions early morning, all got away later with NIPA in Fermoy at Noon, East Down Combine were also Noon in Nenagh and Ulster Federation at 14.45pm in Mallow. In the helping conditions the winners recorded high velocities and returns look ok. The season is drawing to a close, and the extensive club coverage as well, this week we have the Blue Riband YB Nat from Penzance, weather conditions are expected to be good, the birds will need all the help that can get, full coverage next week.
