Northern Ireland Continental Club -

Post by willie reynolds »

Welcome everyone. Hopefully this will be a constructive group, with one objective. To promote Long distance racing into Ireland. We all know how good Northern Irish long distance pigeons are, lets strive to promote them in a coherent and professional manner. Any ideas on how we can make this happen, or what you as racers wan’t please let us all know. This is an open forum where everyone's opinion is valid. Anyone who would like to become a member please contact Martin O Neill or myself Jonathan Bailie.

What's it about?
An informal meeting was held in Banbridge British legion hall in May 2020, this meeting was attended by 5 men who had the interests of long-distance continental pigeon flying at heart. The outcome from that meeting was a resolution to form a club to be called the Northern Ireland Continental club, its purpose was that it would,

PROMOTE, CELEBRATE AND CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THE LONG-DISTANCE RACING PIGEON IN NORTHERN IRELAND.

A guideline was prepared to help identify and develop the core values and reason for the
club.

1:- Provide annual awards by duplicating results from existing French race points with the INFC, EDC, NIPA and Ulster Federation:
2:- Organise social events such as moots, breeder buyer, presentation nights and sales.
3:- Promote and support members wishing to send to additional continental races with the BICC and BBC and investigate the possibility of increasing opportuniites for additional races from France.
4:- Produce regular marketing material on social media platforms and existing racing pigeon publications. This content to include loft reports, Race results, video content and historical literature.

2020 has been a very difficult year for us all. It is true to be said that some organisations dealt with the challenges presented with differing levels of success. One thing however shone through, the resilience and determination of the Northern Irish pigeon fanciers to get racing. To this end it is important to identify the order of importance which the points raised at the initial meeting should be put.

1:- Additional racing from continental race points. This is what the fancier is crying out for. Most lofts this year only had 1 French race instead of the customary 3.
In 2021 it is proposed that the members of the NICC will have access to a minimum of 5 French races providing that the INFC gets racing in 2021.

It was muted that the races should not be called nationals. Never has the term national been more appropriate than when used to describe NICC races. The membership is open to anyone who lives within the boundaries of Northern Ireland.

They will not be Provincials as Northern Ireland is not a province, Northern Ireland is an Internationally recognised country so therefore the term National is more than appropriate to describe these races.

This in particular applies to the mass liberation at St. Malo or wherever for the traditional old bird race for the NIPA, EDC and Ulster federation. Any member from any of those organisations can apply to become a member of the NICC. We are not a competing organisation we are a complimentary organisation. The NICC result from St. Malo will be from the fastest velocities from all 3 organisations. This therefore will give an overall Northern Ireland National old bird champion.

Additionasl races (2 old bird and 1 young bird) have already been organised and facilities put in place with an official BICC marking station in Dublin.

2:- Duplication of results will be used for members competing in the INFC nationals again this is designed to give Northern Ireland national champions.
Again this is not meant in any way to take away from the INFC result. It just means that the 1st bird home into Northern Ireland is the national champion of Northern Ireland even if it is 50th open for all Ireland it is still 1st national Northern Ireland.

People keep racing pigeons to race, this is the key driving factor. It must be the over-riding goal of the NICC to help promote and develop long distance racing and leave it in a fit and vibrant state that will attract young people into the sport and encourage some older ones to stay in the sport.

Racing pigeons is a sport unlike any other. You have a true cross mix of communities, cultures and strata of society all with one goal to win. It is the firm belief of everyone involved with the NICC that we have some of the greatest pigeon fanciers on the planet, here in our 6 counties. Fanciers who can stand shoulder to shoulder with any fancier from Belgium or Holland.

The pigeons we fly are the toughest and bravest that exist anywhere. Yet we have no profile or respect around the world. It is a common thread on social media from fanciers bemoaning the difference in price the fancy names in Belgium and Holland get for birds that can’t hold a candle to what we already have here at home. Our birds don`t amass results against 60 to 100 birds they compete in many cases against up to 20,000 birds

It is time for the pigeon fanciers of Northern Ireland to step out of the shadows and proclaim in a unified voice we are here and deserve to be respected and taken seriously. This is where promotion comes in.

The NICC will work tirelessly to help promote the Northern Irish distance bird and the brave fanciers who nuture and prepare their charges for the most difficult route in the world.

To this end we will develop a website that’s sole purpose will be to promote and record Northern Irelands long distance pigeon flyers worldwide.
The web domain name has already been acquired and construction of the website will be ongoing over the winter.

The club’s website name is niccpigeons.co.uk

Part of the website will be devoted to the history of the Northern Ireland racing pigeon and is hoped that as many members as possible will contribute old photos, race reports, video etc to be used for promotional purposes around the world.

Any one who has looked at the BICC website will have seen the results database. This is an interactive feature that allows results to be searched either by race, fancier or pigeon ring number. This is an invaluable resource for people looking to buy birds or to research performances. It is the intention to have the same facility on the new NICC website. This feature will be added at the end of the 2021 season after racing is completed.

It is also our intention to do regular loft reports etc All information to be housed on the website.

Social media is everywhere, we all use it we slag each other of on it and congratulate each other on it. No successful organisation can exist without social media. It will therefore be essential to have a team of proficient social mediaists to develop this side of the club to raise and maintain our profile around the world. The medium of video is king, it will be a goal of the club to have its own youtube channel this will be used to produce promotional videos on Northern Irish distance birds as well as loft reports, liberations etc.

Setting up a club of like-minded fanciers is the easy part. Making that club something different something that people will be proud to be a member of will be the hard task. With the right will and support from the pigeon people of Northern Ireland we can build a club for the 21st century, a club that will help to put Northern Irish pigeons were they belong on top.

The clubs Motto is Quod est futuri nostrum. THE FUTURE IS OURS. Together let’s make it happen.

The 1st race of the 2021 race season is now over, with the INFC yearling national from Sennen Cove.
Congratulations to all who timed from such a hard race.

Going forward it was intended that the next race, was going to be the first of 3 races organised by Michael Feeney of the 32 counties transporter organisation.
As most of you will be aware of by now, Michael has cancelled the race from Nort Sur Erde scheduled for Wednesday 23rd of June, as he did not have the required liberation documents from the French authorities to hold this race.

Therefore the remaining race programme will be duplication results from all the national races organised by the INFC, (EDC, NIPA & Ulster Fed provided the organisations all release from St. Malo at the same time).

Michael has assured our Chairman Martin O’Neill, that he is working hard to get licences in place, for a race later in the year from either Nord Sur Erde or Poitiers. He has also said that he may be transporting to the BICC Guernsey race on 10th July, we await confirmation. However if he decides to hold any races without the required liberation documents from either France or UK the NICC will not be having these races as part of our programme nor will the Northern marking station (Kindly offered by John Abernethy of Harmony Lofts) be available.

Jonathan Bailie
NICC Secretary
On behalf of NICC office bearers.

It was particularly appropriate to see one of the founding forces behind the NICC, Sid Collins, well up in the prizes.
Congratulations to the race team of Collins & Douglas.

The team of Collins & Douglas flying out of the Blackwatertown W. E. club took 16th North Section 16th Open INFC Yearling national Sennen Cove. Flying a distance of 303 miles 312 yards their Mealy hen returned with a velocity of 1,131 ypm.
The following are Sid's words about the hen
The breeding of the pigeon is as follows.
Bred at my stock loft. Its bloodlines are that of my Irish long distance birds, a recent introduction of the Dave Goddard bloodlines, via Drew Caskey has shown up Trump's in this case.

Another important part of the race team, are Geoffrey's bloodlines of the wal Zootjens and Cuesters.
Main part of the day to day management is carried out by Geoffrey Douglas.
The main man behind the race team management.
Many thanks to Sid Collins for providing the original photograph of the 2nd NICC Sennen Cove winner. Thanks then to the guys at www.pigeonpartners.com for producing the montage for the Award.

Well that is 2 of the winners recorded, the 3rd placed Tommy McLean's birds will be posted hopefully tomorrow evening.
Please remember membership is open to anyone who either lives or is a member of a pigeon club in Northern Ireland. Membership is free.
Only members who have entered before the liberation of a race will be eligible for an award for winning.
So if you are flying Kings Cup Friendship national or St. Malo why not join.
Applications as I have said before are obtainable by emailing info@niccpigeons.co.uk or PM me and I will be very happy to send one to you.

Hi this is the result for the 2nd NICC race of the 2021 season, the St. Malo Old bird national.

When we set out with the idea of the NICC it was to promote Channel and French racing, this result is a great example of how our appeal is spreading. With prize winners coming from the EDC, NIPA & Ulster Fed.

It is the Ulster Fed in this case that has bragging rights with John Ramsey from the Grosvenor club taking top prize with his red Chequer cock that covered the 451 miles 275 yards at a velocity of 691ypm. Congratulations J. Ramsey & Son and I look forward to coming and photographing the race winner some time next week.
John also clocked a second bird a Red Chq cock that took 9th NICC with a velocity of 515ypm.
The 2nd & 3rd positions were taken by the team of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Reid & Son. For a long time waiting for results it looked like the Carrick Social club had once again prevailed following up on the performance of Jim Armstrong in the Yearling National.

When I spoke to Hugh Bigger who is for this season racing the birds he was ecstatic about the result and more so for the recognition that would come the way of Mrs Reid and her late husband who for years had given great service to the sport of pigeon racing in Northern Ireland.
When asked about the birds he said not possible to give many details other than they were Roberts family of French birds.
2nd place was a blue cock and the 3rd bird home was a blue w/flight cock on 686.40ypm and 664.33ypm respectively to cover the 457miles 1,492 yds race.
The Reid's also clocked a third bird a blue w/flight Hen to take 6th NICC.

Congratulations on a great performance and worthy winners of the 2 bird average award.
Mark Witherspoon from the Horse Shoe club also had a great race taking 4th with his Bl Chq hen, 5th with another Bl Chq hen and 10th with a blue bar hen. Great performance getting 3 birds home in race time in what was another tough St. Malo race.

In 7th place was the sole EDC representative in the result, congratulations to Jackie Rankin from the Millisle and District club with a bl chq hen.
In 8th place was club president Wesley Sawyer racing as Rev Tab Sawyer & Son in the Banbridge club with a Cheq hen that is bred down from his Dolly line of birds.
Finally in 11th place congratulations to the team of Gratten Bros & Speers racing out of the Eastway club who in timing their blue cock become the only team to have clocked in both NICC races this year.

Congratulations to all that were brave enough to send and a special word to the wonderful birds that managed to make it home.
Good luck today and tomorrow for the Kings cup and Friendship national races, I look forward to writing about your feats over the next week.

The old bird season is over, what a year it has been.

With Covid still around, the effects of Brexit starting to impact everything, the great sport of Channel pigeon racing carried on.
When 5 men met in Banbridge nearly 10 months ago it was hoped to establish a club to promote and help grow the channel and French racing side of the sport in Northern Ireland.

It was hoped that there would be the opportunity for fanciers to send to additional races with the BICC into France, unfortunately the fallout from Brexit stopped that.
Despite all the turmoil and uncertainty all around them, the organisations managed to put on race programme that have given excitement and top quality racing throughout the year.

Everyone will have an opinion things could have been better, things could also have been a lot worse remember 2020.
2021 the first year of the NICC a new affiliated RPRA club, so far boasting 41 members and what a year of performances our club has given.
In our first year:

Club member Tommy McClean has won 1st open INFC Friendship national & 3rd open Kings cup.
Club member Mark Hughes has won 2nd open INFC friendship National.
Club Member John Ramsey 2nd open Ulster Fed St. Malo
Club member Jackie Rankin 4th open EDC St. Malo
Club member Jim Armstrong 6th Nat INFC Yearling National Sennen Cove.

Club president Wesley Sawyer clocking 2 birds well up in the INFC Kings cup. (Possibly 2 bird average ???)
So many great results my apologies to those I have left out from this resume, all will be covered at a later date.
Yesterday 13th July Club chairman Martin O Neill of L O'Neill & Son Larne racing out of the Harmony Club became only the 2nd person in the history of the BICC (40+years) to win an Irish region award when he clocked to win BICC Irish region Guernsey 2021.
I think the 5 men that sat down in Banbridge could scarcely dream of such a roll of honour for the first year.
Congratulations to all members that have sent to races across the channel and from France this year. Your dedication and the bravery of your birds is what will keep this sport alive.

I have had the pleasure to meet with some of the race winners, photograph their winning birds and produce the awards that will be distributed later in the year.
I have also videoed interviews, these will be available individually, through our soon to be launched Youtube channel and collectively in a years review that will be available shortly before our AGM in Late October. It is hoped these interviews will be there for posterity and to encourage the racers of the future
One more race to go, the INFC young bird national. One more set of prizes to be won and a chance to be immortalised.
Remember membership for 2021 is free, up until hampering for Young bird national.

Only members can vote at AGM and help affect the future and help preserve this great sport. Please join, our aim is to preserve promote and hopefully through time expand nothing else. It has been an honour to be part of this journey with you all so far.
