Marshalls & Moores win 4th of Sept. Races
13th September 2021

The East Down Combine held two races on Saturday the 4th of September ,the Young Bird Channel Derby from Talbenny in Wales and the Inland Irish race from the Horse and Jockey in Ireland . The continuing heavy and at time misty conditions in the early morning meant that at both race points liberation was held back until the middle of the day with Talbenny birds away at 12noon and the Horse & Jockey birds at 1.30pm . With only the Skibbereen YB derby left to complete the Combines 2021 season I suspect most will be glad that this year’s YB season is drawing to a close . The birds in both events were released into a SE wind . Looking first at the Talbenny race where the winners were the Newtownbreda club partnership of Tom & David Marshall whose blue pied won on a velocity of 1402 ypm with their 2nd bird at 9th open . Runners up were the Belmont lofts of D & L Jackson dtrs on 1326 who had a great race with a further 3 birds in the open result at 4th ,17th &19th , with fellow club members J Galbraith & son 5th open and members of this club have recorded many good results at open level since joining the EDC.

3rd Open were the Dundonald partnership of Cowan & McCartney who were also 13th and 28th open and also enjoyed a great race from the Horse & Jockey and look to round the season off by winning the Skibbereen Young Bird Derby . Former winners of the Talbenny Derby Ballylesson’s K &B McConaghie & son not far from the top were 6th ,7th , 20th ,23rd & 35th .

At 14th open winning the East Section it was Geraldine & Paddy Brown of Annsborough and the breeding of this pigeon is pit bull and down from the Rooneys of Annalong . Ballywalter’s Sam Regan was 2nd East section 16th open and 1st bird into the Ards Penninsula and the Breeding is Cattrysse/Herman/Ceusters. Congratulations to all the winners /

Turning now to the Horse & Jockey race

HORSE & JOCKEY - With just over 1000 birds at the Horse & Jockey event the open winner was the only bird to break the 1200ypm mark and was to the Bangor partnership of Reggie & Davis Moore who had a further 5 birds in the open result and took the top 5 places in the East Section . At 2nd ,3rd ,4th ,5th & 6th Open and taking 10 of the top 11 places in the West section ,including the top five it was the Newtownbreda partnership of B Hogg & sons and they had a further 4 birds in the open result . Cowan & McCartney added to their good afternoon’s racing with 3 birds in the result at 11th 17th & 18th Open
