Cowan & McCartney win Skibbereen Derby

The final race of the 2021 East Down Combine season was flown on Saturday September 11th from Skibbereen when the 400 plus birds were liberated at 9.45am into a light Westerly wind . The winners ,and not for the first time were the Dundonald partnership of Rob Cowan & George McCartney who had another 6 birds in the top 40 . I say not for the first time for they were the winners of both of the 2019 Young Bird Skibbereen Derbies and have had another marvellous season in 2021. The winning pigeon is a slatey cock racing roundabout and already prior to winning this Derby had been 3rd club Mullingar, 1st club Tullamore and 6th club 13th open Talbenny YB Derby . The bloodlines of this cock are on the sire’s side Stephen Brown on the Dam’s side Roy Irwin and it was a sister of this cock that went on to win 5th North section in the INFC Skibbereen National the following week .

The Newtownbreda loft of B Hogg & Sons have also enjoyed a very successful 2021 season and round it off from Skibbereen with 2nd &3rd open with further birds winning 9th,14th,16th & 38th Open . Killyleagh’s Clifford Healy wins 4th & 5th open with two darkened hens 4th Open a blue hen racing to the perch is of Gregg Brothers & McCandless bloodlines . Clifford’s hen at 5th open was sitting eggs and is of Murphy Bros bloodlines .

In 6th Open it with Annalong’s Kevin Rooney ,son & dtr .
