Fast NIPA race from Corrin in County Cork -

The NIPA had their 5th race of the old bird season last weekend from Corrin in County Cork, the liberation of just short of 22,000 birds was Saturday 14th May at 10.00am in a helping Lt West SW wind. The 1st Open NIPA winner was timed in the Lurgan Social by Rodney Adamson who had the best bird in Section G followed by Jim Braniff for the new club Trinity RPC having the best bird in Section D, both birds on the same yard. Ligoniel had the best birds in East Antrin with G & M Atcheson 1st & 3rd in Section C with Bingham & Seaton runner-up, big competition here. It turned out another fantastic race with most bird’s home and well set now for the big OB National events.

Next Saturday race points for 21/05/22. Skibbereen Old Bird Inland National with Thursday night race marking. Gowran Park Comeback race with Friday night race marking. Collection points and centres are listed at the tail of this report.

Fast Race from Corrin – McManus team from Ahoghill top Combine & Section

The fifth race of the old bird season was held on Saturday 14th May. Birds were liberated in Corrin in County Cork at 10.00am in light west to southwest winds. Ace racers Paddy & William McManus of Ahoghill had the big winner in the local area timing at 13.34pm for the 205 miles fly to the lofts at the croft in the Ahoghill village to record 1688. Their winning 2-year-old red chequer hen sitting on eggs is a top racer having won both the Combine and Section from Fermoy last season plus 6th Combine from the Skibbereen Inland National and 8th Combine Fermoy. This week she wins 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 1st Section B and an excellent 8th Open NIPA 759/21930. She is a great granddaughter of Gert Heylen's "Jackpot". Another top result for the McManus partnership. Runner up in the Combine on 1681 was Trevor Whyte of Rasharkin who is having a great season having won 1st Open NIPA Tullamore in the opening race of the season and 1st Combine a fortnight ago from Gowran Park. This week’s winner a 2-year-old blue pied Lambrecht hen was bred by clubmate William McFetridge. Next best was Johnston Eagleson & Sons on 1669 who had the best four birds in both Ballymena & District, and the Town. Their winning 3-year-old hen won 1st Club & 2nd Combine in the opening of the season last year. Sam Murphy had the winner in Kells for the third time this season on 1669 and Alan Darragh was again best in Cullybackey with two birds doing 1668. Roscrea Combine winner Sam Crawford was the best Associate member on 1650 and was winning his club for the third time this season. John Miller had the best two birds in Randalstown on 1643. His winner a yearling chequer Van Loon hen was sitting eggs 10 days and Marcus Morrow was best in Broughshane on 1639. Five wins on the trot for Marcus. Mervyn Eagleson PO.

Obituary Vernon Thom – I got the sad news during the week that the Cookstown legend Vernon Thom had passed away at the Craigavon Area Hospital following a period of illness, he was aged 87 years. Although no longer racing he was a big star of earlier years, a fantastic racer that won many races in Cookstown and during that time won I think, the Young Bird Derby from Skibbereen. During most of my early days in the sport he served his local area representing Section A at the NIPA, he was elected President in 1981, and would have been a Life Vice-President. I note he was called Vernon Ernest and I well remember his late son Ernest (Ernie) racing in the Chimney Corner HPS, and at the time was Treasurer in the club. Vernon himself had a big family circle and had 9 great grandchildren. A service of thanksgiving was held in Derryloran Parish Church. Donations in lieu of flowers if desired, to Steenson Funeral Services (Charities account), 11 Loy Street Cookstown, BT80 8PZ for Derryloran Parish Church and Kildress Parish Church. From the local fancy in County Tyrone and all NIPA members and officials, sincere condolences to the family at this sad time. Gone but not forgotten. Willie Reynolds HOMER.

Fast Race from Corrin – McManus team from Ahoghill top Combine & Section

The 5th race of the old bird season was flown from Corrin in County Cork, liberation last Saturday 14th May was at 10.00am in a Lt West SW wind. Best bird locally was timed by Paddy & William McManus who had the top places in the Ahoghill Flying Club their winner recorded velocity 1688 and as well as that won 1st Sect B and a good 8th Open in the NIPA almost 22,000 birds competing. Next best was Trevor Whyte in Rasharkin & District doing velocity 1681, in a best ever season, this loft won 1st Open NIPA in the opening race of the year from Tullamore. Next week we have the OB Inland National from Skibbereen and on the same day a comeback race from a point yet to be confirmed. It’s been great racing so far and not long before the cross channel events.

Fast Race from Corrin – McManus team from Ahoghill top Combine & Section

The fifth race of the old bird season was held on Saturday 14th May. Birds were liberated in Corrin in County Cork at 10.00am in light west to southwest winds. Ace racers Paddy & William McManus of Ahoghill had the big winner in the local area timing at 13.34pm for the 205 miles fly to the lofts at the croft in the Ahoghill village to record 1688. Their winning 2-year-old red chequer hen sitting on eggs is a top racer having won both the Combine and Section from Fermoy last season plus 6th Combine from the Skibbereen Inland National and 8th Combine Fermoy. This week she wins 1st Mid Antrim Combine, 1st Section B and an excellent 8th Open NIPA 759/21930. She is a great granddaughter of Gert Heylen's "Jackpot". Another top result for the McManus partnership. Runner up in the Combine on 1681 was Trevor Whyte of Rasharkin who is having a great season having won 1st Open NIPA Tullamore in the opening race of the season and 1st Combine a fortnight ago from Gowran Park. This week’s winner a 2-year-old blue pied Lambrecht hen was bred by clubmate William McFetridge. Next best was Johnston Eagleson & Sons on 1669 who had the best four birds in both Ballymena & Dist and the Town. Their winning 3-year-old hen won 1st Club & 2nd Combine in the opening of the season last year. Sam Murphy had the winner in Kells for the third time this season on 1669 and Alan Darragh was again best in Cullybackey with two birds doing 1668. Roscrea Combine winner Sam Crawford was the best Associate member on 1650 and was winning his club for the third time this season. John Miller had the best two birds in Randalstown on 1643. His winner a yearling chequer Van Loon hen was sitting eggs 10 days and Marcus Morrow was best in Broughshane on 1639. Five wins on the trot for Marcus. Mervyn Eagleson PO.
