Larkin Bros win the Penzance YB Grand National –

The Blue Riband event of the young bird season for lofts across Ireland was as usual a difficult task for the birds, race marking was delayed from Monday until Wednesday due to the weather. Having consulted with Met Eireann and the convoyer, the race control team have decided that conditions are unsuitable for a release, force 4-6 winds in the channel with rain and heavy showers en-route. We are hopeful for a release tomorrow and will update you in the morning. It was better news on Saturday morning 10th September - Having observed two minutes silence in respect of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II former club Patron, the Convoyer released the pigeons at 08:02am in a light north westerly wind. Our next update will be this evening. The race was difficult enough, and the prize list was completed on the second day.

Well, here we are again, nothing gives me more pleasure than the message from our exalted scribe Homer “Can you supply short report on breeding and racing of Larkin Bros 1st Penzance and a photo of partners with bird. Regards Willie.” It would be an honour willie!
The bird GB22X-11845 a blue hen was timed at 15.07pm to take the top spot in the hardest of tests for our young birds, the INFC YB Grand National. INFC race Review by Homer – YB Grand National Penzance

The Blue Riband YB National and the famous J M K McGugan Cup has a long history in Irish long-distance racing and many top lofts including those in the Mid Antrim area have had outstanding success over the years. First flown in 1948 when won by Norman Rea of Crumlin a number of points were used, Penzance was first flown in 1967 and this point had been used almost exclusive, regardless of the day it’s a major fly for young birds. The winning list is in pigeonnetwork.com as a part of INFC History.

J M K McGugan Perpetual Cup – YB Channel Grand National
1948 Milford Haven N Rea Crumlin 838
