Yearling Nat Penzance - 1st Open Martin Graham

It was in 1932 that His Majesty King George V presented a new cup to the Irish National Flying Club to be known as The King George V Challenge Cup and was to be awarded to the winner of the OB Grand National.

The 1932 Grand National race was flown from Les Sables at a distance of some 600 miles and the race was won by R Hawthorn from Ligoniel in North Belfast. This race was flown under IHU rules and it was not until 1948 that the Kings Cup was flown under IHU and RPRA rules. The race in 1948 was won by Sammy Robinson from Belfast.

Second Yearling National win for Martin Graham of Ballymena –

The Yearling Nat was the usual very hard test and Martin Graham who had won this race just a few short seasons ago set the pace with a big early arrival into Ballymena and the local Mid Antrim area. The Ballymena & Dist HPS have a long record steeped in history and over the years have probably won all the major races flown by the NIPA and INFC at both Derby and National level. Good to see one of the younger generation rising to the occasion and recording a host f positions in many of the major races, this Yearling Nat might just now be the favourite. Mervyn Eagleson has covered a lot of the local detail in his MAC race report. Top winners were reported across Ireland and around 200 birds made home lofts on the day with a lot more over the second day of the event. Good to see the entry get above 3,000 birds and this despite the marking arrangements not suiting many of the membership. When the Yearling Nat was added to the INFC programme we had no idea it would have been as successful and the Nelson Corry Cup is presented to the winner. Very well done to all those who made the result Zeballos & Thorpe from the Trim RPC were 2nd and 3rd Open INFC with birds together and won a total of £2,300 and the 2 Bird Average. The race was sponsored by Beattie’s Bird & Pet Foods and three bag of mixture won by 1st RPRA Martin Graham vel 1398, 1st IHU North D & M & G Ferguson vel 1075 and 1st IHU South Zeballos & Thorpe vel 1384.

Mid Antrim Combine won by Martin Graham -

Wednesday 14th June 2023 is another day Martin Graham of Ballymena will remember for a lifetime. After flying the 329 miles to the majestic lofts on the Old Cullybackey Road his classy blue pied hen timed in at 14.24pm to win the INFC Penzance Yearling National and emulate her sire "Champion Denman" who won the same race back in 2018 when flown from Sennen Cove. This is the second time Martin won 1st Open INFC Yearling National and add to that the NIPA Skibbereen OB Inland National win in 2004 making Martin a triple National winner and all achieved in old bird racing. Martin only concentrates on the National races and over the years has amassed many fantastic results namely 1st Section, 1st Open NIPA Skibbereen OB Inland National with "Sunnyhill Lass", 1st Section & 2nd Open NIPA Lamballe OB National with "Champion Siobhan", 2nd Section & 4th Open NIPA St Malo OB National, only bird in Section B and 7th Open NIPA St Malo OB National with "Brenda Anne". The list is endless and is enhanced every season. Martin's winning blue pied hen and was sitting eggs 10 days and has now been named "Den's Lass". The sire as I mentioned earlier is "Champion Denman". A great racing cock for Martin winning the club in 2018 from the NIPA Skibbereen OB National plus 88th Open and a few weeks later 1st Open INFC Sennen Cove Yearling National 332 miles velo 1419. The dam of Martin's latest National winner is a blue hen that won 13th Open in a strong headwind from the INFC Penzance YB National smash of 2015. Sire of the dam is "Lion Eyes" bred from Martin's original No1 stock cock "Sunnyhill Producer" the sire of 10 x 1st including 4th Open Lamballe OB National. The mother of the dam is a daughter of "The Big Hen" responsible for countless National positions for himself and many others. In fact "The Big Hen's" bloodlines run through all six of the birds Martin timed. The dams mother also bred "Wee Fiona" 19th Open INFC Kings Cup in the St Allouestre smash of 2021 when only 42 birds homed in race time. Martin's second bird clocked at 15.30pm to win 13th Open was another blue hen sitting 12 days on eggs. Sire of this one is "Treble One" a son of "The Big Hen" and also the sire of 57th Open Kings Cup smash 2018. Dam is "Rushvale Percilla" Glen McNeilly of Ballyclare's No1 stock hen purchased by Martin at McNeilly's clearance sale. This hen had already bred Glen a 1st Section & 5th Open St Malo National bird in 2021. Breeding is M & D Evans Vandenabeele. Martin timed his third bird sitting 8 day on egg at 15.43pm to win 21st Open. Dam of this hen is the same dam as the first hen and the sire was a cheq cock kindly presented by Malachy Maguire of Newry to the INFC Charity auction in 2020. Sire of the Maguire Cock is Young Sean a winner of 1st Section & 2nd Open NIPA St Malo National 2015. Dam is "No Surprise" 22nd Open INFC St Allouestre Kings Cup and winner of the Harkness Rose Bowl with her half brother Young Oisin in 2018. No Surprise was also 4th Open in the INFC Kings Cup Single Bird Challenge in 2019. Bloodlines of the Maguire cock also includes Home Alone and Portavogie Lass. In total Martin timed 6 of his 9 entries in surely what is one of his best days racing to date. Martin is a hardworking 5 days a week man and everything he's achieves with the pigeons he works extremely hard for and deserves every bit of his success. Well done again Martin, a top champion racer. Mervyn Eagleson PO.

1st North Sect & 1st Open Martin Graham of Ballymena & Dist, vel 1398 flying 329 miles winning £580 and the Nelson Corry Trophy

Martin Graham of Ballymena is one of the up-and-coming ace racers of the local area, he wins this race for the second time and has a fantastic CV at the distance. He adds to a long list of top winners in the long-standing Ballymena & District, many champions from the past household names of the sport. Totally dedicated to the sport and takes great care of his loft, a third generation of the sport I can well remember his father and grandfather racing the birds based at Brooke Park in Harryville. MAC press man Mervyn Eagleson has covered this win in his Mid Antrim report.

1st & 2nd South Sect and 2nd & 3rd Open Zeballos & Thorpe of Trim RPC, vel 1384 and 1384 flying 243 miles winning £2306 and the Sam Buckley Memorial Cup best 2 Bird Ave and James McGrugan Memorial Cup for 1st South Sect.

What a result for Herbie Thorpe the former Kings Cup winner with two birds together to win 1st & 2nd Sect and 2nd and 3rd Open INFC. Brief info of the two birds, full of top winning lines at the distance.

IHU22S -117506 Cheq hen is from a Half-brother to Bert’s Girl 2015 Kings Cup winner & Half-brother to John Hayden’s Triple 5. Miller Gold Cup winner 2016. IHU22S -117629 cheq cock is from a Half - Sister to Bert’s Girl KC winner 2015 & Half-Sister to John Hayden’s Triple 5, the 2016 Miller Gold Cup winner. 3rd pigeon from a full brother to Bert’s Girl the Kings Cup winner. Thanks to Keith Nolan organising the Trim RPC of €5,000 Nom. Myself and Ines winning it with our second pigeon. Thanks Herbie. A super performance and the loft continue to win at the highest level, Herbie has a small stud in Dublin and a feed store as well. Well done.

3rd South Sect & 4th Open for S Dunne & Son from Balbriggan, vel 1359 flying 242 miles winning £156.

S Dunne & Son have the first bird in the East Coast Federation and the local PO supplied me with the following short report. Balbriggan IRPC - INFC Yearling National from Penzance 2023. 485 INFC members sent 3,070 birds to this year's yearling race from Penzance, which turned out to be a very tough race due to the extreme hot weather. Out in front this year in Balbriggan IRPC and true to current loft form was Stephen Dunne & Son, Stephen timed a little Blue Herman Ceuster hen which he purchased in a kit from Keith Allister of Monaghan Rpc in 2022, this hen is a direct daughter of Keith's Talbenny Open winner.

Stephen has raced his team all year on the roundabout system and with great performance and results mounting up, he remained on this system across the channel, this tight little Ceuster hen timed in at 12:43 with an impressive velocity of 1359.74 flying over 242 miles earning her 1st club,1st Ecf, 3rd South Sec & 4th Open INFC. Earlier this year this hen was also 03rd Ecf Fermoy 130mls and 04th Ecf Clonmel 106mls. Stephen and his Trainer/Helper Wayne Marry have had 4 wins and numerous positions this year already, not forgetting there great performance from the INFC Skibbereen inland national where the lads were an impressive 1st club, 2nd Ecf, 5th Middle Sec & 32nd INFC Open with a velocity of 1250.80 flying over 192 miles, well done Stephen & Wayne on your fantastic Club, Fed and National results so far this season, I’m sure there is plenty more to come this season. Tony Corcoran PO.

4th South Sect & 5th Open E, E & S Kavanagh of Arklow United, vel 1295 flying 18 miles winning £121.

Another loft with a good track record in the INFC score again with a single entry to finish 5th Open and first bird in the South Leinster Federation.

2nd North Sect & 6th Open M Gillan of Newry & Dist, vel 1280 flying 286 miles winning £647.

Micky Gillan and grandson Rory were delighted with the result finishing 1st Club, 1st Banbridge Centre, 2nd North Section and 6th National. The winning bird is a late bred hen. She was unraced or trained last year, this year she had 3 inland races and 1 Talbenny race before the Penzance Yearling national. Her breeding is cock from Gary Inkley and a hen from my good friend Dessie Carroll. She was sent to the race on her first nest with eggs just hatched. Lastly, I would like to congratulate the winner Martin Graham on winning the national and well done to all in the result. Jordan Hughes PO.

5th South Sect & 7th Open J Fitzgerald & Grand-daughter of Rathnew, vel 1279 flying 199 miles winning £196.

Hi Mr Reynolds, my club friend John Franey contacted Joe Fitzgerald & gran-daughter from Rathnew asking for some information photo etc for you. Joe is a very good friend of mine and has asked me to send some information to you on his behalf. The dark check cock provisional 7th open has joes own distance strain on the father side and the mother was bred by his friend Ron Fewings from a grandson of shadow Gaby Vandenabeele and Gaby Turbo lines very consistent breeders. This dark cock now named “Carrick Mountain Boy” was trained and given only one race at 100 miles as a young bird, and this year given the first 5 inland races only up to 150 miles. “Carrick Mountain Boy” is the boss of the loft and really is a beauty, his hen laid the night before marking and he was sitting the one egg going to the Yearling National. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my friend Ron Fewings for all his support the last few years means a lot and gifting me the mother of my 7th national. I have attached a photo of joe Fitzgerald holding “Carrick Mountain Boy” and his good friend Ron, joe insisted was in photo. I hope this information is ok for you. Just to add joe clocked a 2nd bird to get 138th open and 32nd south and good returns having 8/20 thanks Ron Fewings.

3rd North Sect & 6th Open Larkin Bros of The Meadows HPS, flying 299 miles winning £638.

Larkin Bros Meadows - Well here we are again, it gives me great pleasure to be asked to compile a report on the latest fantastic performance by the Larkin Brothers.

The ‘60 hen was clocked at 2.27 pm to take 3rd North Section 8th National she was raced roundabout and campaigned for the majority of the old bird races, she was also 21st Open in the first Talbenny to add to her tally for the year.

The breeding of this hen is the epitome of generosity and friendship, her sire was given to me the year I started racing on my own away from the Brothers, from Kings cup winner Geoffrey Douglas, the 147 cock had 5 firsts including 7th north section Skibbereen he was paired to another gift bird, this time from another Kings cup winner Allan McDonald, she is a daughter to Classic Ryan who won the Penzance Classic and Penzance race, the hen raced well for me only to be lost in the Classic the following year, she was reported in Trim in a very bad state by a non fancier. On putting the call for help out my plea was answered by Kevin Commins from Castlepollard who brought her back from the brink of death, got her fed up and well again, this act of kindness has forged another friendship. The hen went on to finish 27th Open from St Malo the following year. So there you have it, the old adage rings true, the best birds you’ll ever get are given in friendship.

Jim and Paul would like to thank all the people who have called and messaged with congratulations. The brothers also finished 26th National 15th north section with a yearling which was a stray young bird who decided to make the Loughgall Road lofts it’s new home, it belonged to Philip Calvin, who kindly transferred the bird wishing that it would do a turn for them. Their final two on the day finished 37th National 22nd north section, and 200th National 164th North section, they both are grandchildren of our Gold Ring pair, a Formula One Hereman Ceuster cock and a Staf Van Reet hen from our good friend Billy Higgins of Annalong. Al Larkin PO.

4th North Sect & 9th Open D & B Lyness of Lurgan Social, vel 1263 flying 301 miles winning £135.

D & B Lyness of Lurgan Social - Timing a blue hen at 2.27pm to claim 4th North section 9th National we have the Mourneview Loft of Dennis Lyness, no stranger to National success, former National winner. Dennis timed a Willy Jacobs hen bred by himself from parents who were a gift from his good friend Tom Wilson of Gilford, she was raced natural and sent to the Yearling National sitting due eggs. A beautiful, well balanced, silky feathered and intelligent hen with plenty of heart. Congratulations Dennis and thank you for your time. Al Larkin PO.

6th South Sect & 10th Open K O’Brien & Son of Malahide & District, vel 1255 flying 221 miles winning £131.

Malahide & District have a long history of success in the INFC and in this seasons Yearling Nat K O’Brien & Son took 1st Club, 6th South Sect & 10th Open INFC. Kenneth supplied some info. “Hillside JJ” The sire is a son of “Jack Jones” from G M Preece in Dover. Dam is David Black x Hanseen she flew France on three occasions. The cock that was clocked was not raced as a young bird, just trained from Bray. He got all the land races this year then into Penzance. He got two sons of “Jack Jones” from good friends Ray Coughlin – young Ray had to leave the sport due to health problems and Kenneth had the pick of the loft. The Hanseen birds came from Terry Tregnning, Kenneth and Art Kelly went to Terry when he was getting out of the birds and got the lot. We were very lucky to get them, and they have produced many winners for a lot of lofts including their own. Thanks Terry and Art.

The INFC Committee are grateful once again for all the help at the race marking, and also all those involved in the various Clock Centres across Ireland including the temporary stations at Edgarstown in Portadown and Coleraine, every little bit of help is appreciated. On a personal note, many thanks to all those who supplied text and photos for this report or helped in any other way. The more info we get the better job can be done, any little snips, details of the bird itself plus info on the sire and dam. Any awards won previous, how long in the birds etc. ASAP after the race. The race report usually features the Top 10 of each race, contact details are in the 2023 Race Booklet.
